Is there any salvaging this thing?

I am making a dog head to practice skills, and it was turning out pretty OK.  There were some symmetry issues and the foam work is a little generic, but hey, not bad for a second head.  But woe!  I am suffering the consequences of poor planning and not remembering "less is more."  The very first bit of airbrushing I did I wasn't very happy with, but rather than stepping back and planning what I was going to do next, I kept trying to "fix" it.  Ech... and then I put the black under the nose, and all I can think is "Hiter 'stache."  Then the eyebrows... oh god what have I done?  Is there any salvaging this head?  Should I just re-fur the face and learn my lesson?

The eyes are just barely pinned on which is why he looks hilariously wall-eyed from the front.  Don't even ask what breed I'm going for.  Golden retriever?  Yellow lab?  You decide!

EDIT: I read everyone's comments and made some changes.  I lightened the airbrushing around the muzzle and above the eyebrows and stuck in a temporary tongue and set of teeth.  I feel a lot better!  I was getting that thing where you stare at something so long you start to hate it, so everyone's kind words really helped me calm down, thanks guys :3  Do y'all think there's anything I should add, or should I quit while I'm ahead?  I need to do some touch-ups to the ears and maaaybe the eyebrows, but I'll play with it in photoshop before I load up my brush.

Apoxy Eyelids?

I'm getting ready to install some plastic dome/taxidermy style eyes onto my resin blank, and was wondering if anybody had any tips for doing eyelids out of apoxy putty! Should I put the putty on the resin as well as the eyes themselves? Is there a general shape I should be going for? Any general tips at all?

Edit: Anyone have experience using fleece or something like it for eyelids either?

Can anyone confirm this fur for me?

I live in Canada so Distintive Fabrics won't ship to me and Etsy is pretty pricey for faux fur. Someone is asking specifically for "black monkey shag" and is this also Fabric.com's "Faux Fur Arctic Fox Black"? In some of the pictures they look similar and I already have a few yards of fox.

Alternatively, does anyone else sell monkey shag? I need to order a bunch of DFs (mainly their new blues) later anyway so maybe I can combine shipping.

Has anyone bought this specific fur? http://bigzfabric.com/index.php/fabrics/faux-fake-fur-fabric-long-pile/faux-fake-fur-solid-shaggy-long-pile-fabric/faux-fake-fur-solid-shaggy-long-pile-fabric-navy-blue-sold-by-the-yard.html
From the picture, it looks a bit lighter than your typical Navy DF but pictures can be deceiving. Is it lighter then DF navy? Or does it just look that way?

If anyone has any comparison shots, that would be spectacular!

SO I went to Boca Bargoons today for some Suede and figured I'd ask about their fur as well. They had your typical DF furs along with something they called "Luxury shag" It was so beautiful and realistic with guard hairs and a nice dense pile. I was pretty upset to find that they were charging $41 for the DF fur and $41 for the luxury stuff too. I did a bit of 'spying' and found that their suppliers were based in LA from some wholesalers called E.Z fabrics. While they don't have a retail option on their site yet (I called and they told me that their site is pretty much under construction), they DO sell to a sister site! This is the cheapest I've seen these fabrics without coupons and so I thought I'd share it with all you fine people!

Shipping is very reasonable or you can swing by their store and pick it up yourself to skip shipping costs :3

New Cheetah on the block (Looking for fur and tail tips)

This is my very first post here, but I've read about forty pages back already just soaking it all in.

Anyway, I am newish to the actual costuming part of the fur community and am making my first tail. All my other fur colors are nice DF fabrics, but the black I bought (longish ago) is Joanns Grizzly black. You guys know what that means. Soo, I figure if I want a nice tail, I should get nice fabric for all of it and not cop out.

Here is my progress so far (The black fur in question pictured)

Does anyone have scraps or partial yardage of a nice long pile black, most likely DF or Lux Shag black? I don't need much, maybe a fourth of a yard.

Just asking around! Thanks so much.

(For clarity, I'm not looking for handouts, I'm looking to buy haha)

Animal contact with fur?

Hello everyone!

Turns out we had an unwelcome guest in the form of a brown rat. I accidentally scared it out of its nest I found in the storage closet this morning, and it managed to sneak in my room. I happened to look over and to my horror it disappeared into my neatly folded fake fur that I sit on my bottom shelf.

My pet rat Lola is a clean little booger and I still don't let her touch fursuit materials directly or indirectly because of allergies and things like that. I'm actually probably more funny about it than I should be.

I managed to trap the rat in a 10 gallon cage, but not before it ran on top of and in the fur once or twice more, to to my dismay. It was fur I planned on selling, but I don't want to sell it like that! I also plan on using a lot of the fur for a fursuit (a rat, coincidentally). I want to clean it, but how do I disinfect 2-4 yards of fur at once? Can I even sell it afterwards? It's a lot of fur to sit around and me not use, but I'm not sure anyone would even want to buy it now. The rat didn't do anything gross to it, just skittered across it- but still.

What should I do with it?

Thanks in advance >:

Altering a fullsuit

I'm putting serious thought into bidding on a pre-made fullsuit on furbuy. Only problem is, it's way too big for me. The suit would best fit someone who's 5'10 and about 160 lbs. I'm 5'2 and 135 lbs. How difficult would it be to alter the suit to fit my measurements? And what are some good resources for learning how to do this?

Very small handpaws and footpaws

I was wondering if any of the experienced builders on here would know how to achieve a very form fitting style of hand and foot paws.

My character is a cheetah, who have very tiny feet. I love the toony large look on other suits, but I want my semi-partial (footpaws, hand paws, headband ears and tail) to fit me as a person and look pretty natural. I'm a really slim girl- which doesn't help.

I would like to work with DF shaggy furs, which I have heard shave down well.

Thanks in advance for any help I hopefully get!

Odd question, but...

Aside from Tioh's Lepi and Usagi rabbit fursuits, does anybody know of any rabbit fursuits that are very realistic in appearance? At least for the head portion. If you do have any examples/pics, could you please post them? Thanks muchly!

Silver Dragon head

This was my first time attempting to build something on top of a resin base. The Client requested elements of her Honda Accord (color, turn signals, high/low beams) fused with her dragon character.

Neat lighting effects and turn signals done by Roofur. Silicone eyes, resin base, and jawset by Monoyasha.

As for things I did right:

* Antron fleece is magical. This was my first time working with it and overall it went pretty well. Some of the seams are still visible but I'm still working on perfecting my Muppet stitch ;)

* I thought that installing the lights would be a royal headache but it wasn't as big of a pain as I thought it would be, so yay?

* First time doing a hair / mane like this.. I love the effect I got with the bangs flopping over the bridge of his snout :3

* Didn't use my airbrush (still afraid to touch it, hurr) but used copics to "shade" him instead. Love how his belly scales and nose detail turned out.

Things I did wrong / poorly:

* I need to find a better way to get moving jaws to work. This one only works if the wearer exaggerates their jaw movements. The whole act of trying to get it to move properly without sliding around on the head and without crushing the wearer's skull was a nightmare. It's almost completely turned me off of ever using resin bases again. =\

Holding neck down on partial

whines-mask

So...I extended the 'bib' on the hyena mask so it goes down past nipple length in the front, and almost that far in the back. Sadly it still pulls out from under my shirt when I move my head around a lot. :/

Here are me ideas for dealing with this:

* Add extra slack on the neck, a bit of double chin. That'd give the slack needed for craning the head up (which I frankly have to do to see faces, it's a hunched head position--totally appropriate for a hyena, but occasionally one needs to see)

Downside: This won't help with turning or with the back, where I've added some padding to give a bit of that horselike hyena neck.

* Suspenders worn inside the shirt, elastic straps to pull it back down when it gets yanked up.

Downside: ...connected to what? Since this has to be under the shirt, the'd have to clip to my underwear...wedgie city?

* Wear a form-fitting T-shirt under it, and use velcro or something to attach the edges to the shirt.

Downside: More layers make sweaty big guys like me sad. :/ And maybe it'd just result in the shirt being pulled up over time.

* Extend the 'bib' to go under my arms so they can hold it down. Perhaps have an elastic band running around my chest to hold the middle of the front down.

Upside: Under my clothes, I get to dress like Leeloo from Fifth Element.

Downside: ...more stuff jammed in my pits? Actually this seems pretty practical.

Any of y'all have experience with this? I assume I'm not the first person to have this problem!

Please help me find this fur!

Hi guys, I thought that you could maybe help me track down a specific fur I need! (I also posted in fursuitauctions, but since there are different people here, I hope you don't mind if I also ask here since I'm pretty desperate to find a fur like this by now!)

Things I know about the fur:
It was for sale at Denver Fabrics about a year ago
Pile height is a little bit longer than CRS furs
Backing is comparable to DF shag
Color is approximately what many shops would sell as "golden brown"

I would need about 5-6 yards of this! If any of you know a place where to get this, I would be super happy! :)

It's the one in the middle in the picture below:

For comparison: DF grey shag (left), DF yellow shag (top), DF black shag (right), CRS cubby bear rust (bottom)

Comparison: DF grey shag, DF yellow shag, DF black shag, CRS cubby bear rust

Comparison with CRS rust fur

Backing, compared to CRS fur

thanks for any help :)

First fursuit head. I have some questions. s:

$

So I will soon be starting my first fursuit head, and I'm a bit excited.
I have some questions to ask before I start. I actually got a fursuit base from a suit maker, and I'm going to go off of that. However, it still needs the mouth carved out before I can start.
Here are my questions. Err...

1. What is the best tool to carve out foam? I don't want to mess up because I don't have any actual foam myself.
2. There is no foam covering the back of my head, so should I put any there?
The base has a balaclava attached to it.
3. When I do fur it, should I sew the back together or leave like a zipper or velcro or something?
4. I need to make two little teeth for the top. What would be the best clay to use to make them and how should I attach them?
5. When furring the head, should I just glue the fur directly onto the foam? (I know that you're supposed to sew it together and stuff beforehand. xp)
6. Should I put in the eyes, nose, teeth, and fleece inside the mouth before I fur or after? The nose I'm pretty sure is before, but I thought I'd ask about the others.

I hope this isn't asking too much. I just want to do everything correctly before I even start. Thank you all for the help! <3

Help with fur color?

head template questions?

$

So, I'm sure I'll be fussing over this in the next few weeks -- but I figured I'd ask on here as well. I've got a pretty good idea of the "general" shapes one might use for foaming a more "generic" shaped canine head (er let's just say pointy nose) and I've been looking at the few suits/in progress pics I could find to help but, would anyone be able to help maybe give me some ideas for template shapes I might be able to use for a more squished in dog like a Pug?

Any tips/advice/suggested shapes would be great. I'm also wondering how I'm going to do all the folds and I'm afraid I'm going to over think everything and go crazy heheh. It's going to be a toony style head. Also trying to figure out how to do the eyes, I really want to capture the "boggle" eyes Boston Terriers have going and someone recommended using tea strainers (which I'm going to try unless I get a better idea). I'm going with those instead of domes/bowls/acrylics whatever because I want something that's at least semi-breathable. I wish there was a way to curve plastic mesh or buckram into more of a "bowl" shape but I can't think of anything. ;_; Any help on that front would be great too!

Leg stilts

Hey guys!

I checked the memories but didn't see anything about this, so I figured I'd ask. For those of you who have worn digitigrade stilts, how hard are they to walk and balance in? I'm sort of clumsy, so I'm trying to figure out if it's something that I'd trip over at a con and hurt myself. ^_^; I'm also assuming any stairs would be out.

Heya guys,
I'm struggling to match fur with a commission. Initially I said I'd airbrush the fur but I think I'm going to struggle with that since it's such a large area and I doubt I'd be able to get it even so if someone could help I'd be so grateful.
Looking for this colour-

The other colour in the suit is baby blue which is a good match but I'm struggling to find this one anywhere. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

So much for mold making tonight! I opened my bottle of Oomoo 30 Part A (the pink part) and it was solid! Like rubber! It's as if it was mixed with Part B, because that's what it feels like. It definitely wasn't, though. Can anyone explain what happened here...
