Plastic Egg Ornaments

Heya! My Joann's used to carry these, except in an egg shape. They don't seem to carry the egg-shaped ornaments anymore and I can't find them on the Joann's website either.

I am wondering if anyone knows if Micheal's or Hobby Lobby carries them? I'd rather not buy them online if I don't have to, seems overkill for such a low-priced item.

Thanks for any help you can give me!

Custom dyed fur?

3rd mask WIP plus questions.

Hello again. c: I just have a couple of questions and a progress video.

Questions:
1. When adding neck-fur over a balaclava base, do you sew the fur to only part of the balaclava? Or do you let it drape? Or do you sew it all the way around the neck? P:
2. When adding a nose (in this case it'll be clay), do you generally add the nose after furring? It'll be a cat nose.

And here it is, my mask so far:

Does it look recognizable as a cat? :P I'll try my hand at whiskers further on. I realized that I probably won't be able to make following eyes for this mask, since the base sits close to my eyes. :x

a new way to smooth a head (possibly)

So I was at this mildly adult puppet show (think Avenue Q) and I was talking to some people about the construction of the puppets used. Anyways, they told me of a completely new method that I've certainly never heard of for smoothing out foam heads.

Get this, to smooth the puppets' heads they use.... A BELT SANDER!
It completely blew my mind when they said that! They said the trick to it is A) a clean sanding belt (duh) and B) wet the foam a little with a mister so the head doesn't catch (don't want to be ripping off cheeks).
It seems like it would be so much easier than using tiny scissors or box cutters and I'm incredibly tempted to test out the effectiveness of this new method.Has anyone ever heard of this or done this with their costume heads?

building footpaws over platforms, making paws smaller

I found some platform shoes and want to build new footpaws over them but have never built them over platforms. They have a 5" tall platform so I don't wan't them to look huge if possible.I also have a pair of footpaws which were made on a shoe much bigger than I wear, any advice on how I can make them wearable? I am assuming padding the inside with foam somehow? should it be glued in? in the toes or the heel? Any advice on the platform paw construction or the oversized shoe problem appreciated!

Priscilla Head

So this isn't completely fresh, but I thought I'd post it here anyway!

Finished up a sort-of artistic license head for Skookum. She picked the fur colors and gave me a couple species to pick from, I did the rest. This is my...4th head? Second toony styled head, second time carving a foam base, first time doing buckram eyes. The goal descriptors here were CUTE and GIRLY, so I hope I got that.

^The original concept, which I ended up straying from

I'm definitely more of a fan of working with resin bases, with resin eyes, in more realistic styles. But it came out pretty alright, thanks to this community and the wealth of fuzzy knowledge contained here.

Fun foam in ears?

Currently working on making ears for my fursuit and she is a Rabbit lop hybrid and lops have kind of diffrent ears then other rabbits:

On my first sivi head I just cut out some pieces and glued them together and used the warm glue to shape it, but I dont really want do that on my latest. the ears might be lighter without anything in them, but them might not look shaped.

So have anyone else used thin fun foam in ears with no problem?

(The picture used for refs on the ears are of my own little lop girl Tommelise.)

Semi-Realistic Gray Fox Partial Suit!

Just finished this guy yesterday :)

I was inspired by photos of gray fox mounts, they have so many colors and textures of fur on their bodies, really pretty! I sought out to experiment with a stylized realism head. In foaming, I used photos of taxidermy head forms as a reference, which was actually harder than I imagined it would be... Canine heads are more horizontal than they are vertical, which makes it tricky to blend with a human's skull shape vs a character that's already highly abstracted from the original animal.

I didn't take a whooole lot of WIP photos, mostly quick cellphone shots to share with Twitter. Here's one of in in the middle of foaming, before ears, eyelids, or nose. The muzzle felt kinda long to me, but the taxidermy forms had pretty long snouts too, so I just went with it and hoped for the best.

The eyes are glass blanks from VanDyke's... I know resin is cheaper, but I just don't like how they look. The glass eyes have a shallower curve and come in larger sizes, and are crystal clear, they don't yellow with age either.

I worked on this project whenever I had a free moment, nights and weekends. Here is a photo of it pre-shaving. xD Looks like a schnauzer fox hybrid, huh? I would have just used teddy white for the muzzle and brows, but I didn't have any in stock, and part of the reason I wanted to do this project in the first place was to get rid of some excess fabric. I wouldn't really recommend shaving down large areas of fox fur, it's far less forgiving than say DF fur. I also had a really rough time seeing what I was doing under all the fluff, so it was kind of a pain in the butt to fur the head with.

Anyway, this is the finished head! I ended doing some paint shading... I like it! I tried to have a light touch because too much paint makes a head look gross. I hope I did well! I usually don't really do any paint work on my heads because my usual style is a clean cut toon style.

A few detail shots. The nose is my usual method of carved foam dipped in Plasti-dip. Vision is out the tearducts.

The gloves are mostly hand-sewn and have custom cast rubber claws and pawpads, which are firmly stuck on with E6000. Just a little bit of shading on the gray part of the outer arm.

A picture of all the parts together. The tail is just a regular stuffed polyfil tail with two nylon beltloops. It also has some nice blending work done on it.

And a pic of the whole ensemble together on me! :) I'm a fairly small person, it also looks good on someone larger.

I also made a little video showing off the various features of the costume here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yp3RweHyKyA&feature=youtu.be

Finally, this costume is for sale! The auction is almost 50% off the price it would have cost to commission, pretty good deal :D That auction link is here: http://www.thedealersden.com/auction_details.php?name=gray-fox-partial-suit-by-lobitaworks&auction_id=113251
Feel free to pass the link on to anyone you think might be interested. Thanks for lookin!

I hope to continue to do experimental stuff in my spare time, it's fun and pretty low pressure. ^_^

Toony Wolf Foamwork Advice

Hi Everyone, I'm hoping to get some advice on my sculpt.

The idea is that it's a toony wolf. I'm aiming for a mischievous expression, but not to the point of being evil or frightening for children, just to look like an endearing troublemaker.

I think it's coming together decently well, but I'm afraid it may look fox-like or just not like a wolf somehow. I was wondering what you guys thought, and maybe some advice or lines if you think it needs improvement anywhere. My main focus being expression and species accuracy.

Buckram?

Alright, all I ever hear is how buckram is available at Hancock. But I couldn't find any.
The closest I could find was Aida cloth which is cross-stitch canvas.

Would Aida be useable for eyes?

And if not does anyone know where in the store I might find buckram?

The other option would be if someone would be willing to send me some in trade for art.

Bulky Before it gets thin

Everyones red lines are so helpful! I did a bit of work today adding on lots of foam after school. My nose also came in the mail :) I haven't attached it yet, I just put it in the nose hole to show what it looks like (not what it will look like on the suit later)

I want to add more depth to the eyes best I can and round out the head :) It's REALLY bulky and only carved a bit on one side so I thought I'd post an update!

This was what it looked like before.

Dinosaur!

I don't think I ever shared this here! I made this a couple months back and I'm so happy with how it turned out.

For those that don't recognize the character, this is the triceratops Woog from the 1993 animated film 'We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story.'

I can't even begin to describe how proud I am of this. It came out way better than I imagined and I'm just so SO happy with it. I had a big smile on my face as he was coming together. :)

This base is pretty big. I included a comparison of this base to a slightly-above-average sized fursuit head. It's partially because vision is from the mouth and partially because this fursuit is going to require a huge fat suit!

I apologize for the crappy photos/collage. I had to use Paint because I was borrowing my sister's computer at the time.

Here's the references I used:

Comments are very very appreciated! I'm so proud of this! <3

Fur matching

So I am in the process of acquiring a pretty sweet base and I am sooo pumped to fur it.

So I am not an expert fur matcher and I need your help. :)
I'm not too attached to these specific hues. The main goal is to match the schema. The non-white colours can have a natural pattern to them as well. The blond patch on the back is going to be straight up and then air brushed/dyed to have the brown ridge.
Also, if you know of a good long tan/blond based fur with brown tips, suggestions for that would be awesome too. :)
I am currently working on just the head, but I may make this into a fullsuit in the future so I would like to have all of my fur together now instead trying to match old stuff in the future.

3D Resin Eyes - Help attaching front to back.

I've made a few 3D resin eyes but have had some issues adhering the 2 halves. I've been adhering the halves together by using a 2 part epoxy spread thin and then pressing the 2 halves together to eliminate bubbles. This seems to work great appearance wise but inevitably a good amount squeezes out and makes a mess. Is there a better adhesive to use or a better technique to attaching the 2 parts together?

Trade: Jawset for Foam/Stuff to Pad the Inside of Head?

Hey guys, I posted a little while ago about my lioness fursuit with the problem pawpads and the head that's just too big.
I've not received any response whatsoever from the maker, I assume he's busy with stuff but I feel a little disappointed there. I wasn't angry or upset at all, just asked for advice on how to proceed.

My biggest priority is making the head fit like it should.

I've been trying to get used to wearing the head, trying to see if it's just something I'm doing that's making it not sit right -- but I have to say I've worn it quite a bit now and it's just giant on me. It fits my boyfriend's head okay, but not me. :( If I grab the head and push it back onto my face, I can see and feel where my head is supposed to sit inside it and the vision and jaw movement would be pretty good. The problem is just that I can't keep it in that position. Just putting the head on, I can't move the jaw and vision is very poor. Trying to open the jaw results in the head sliding down and making me blind. Trying to turn the head results in the same thing, so I have to kind of hunch my shoulders to compensate which looks goofy and is painful to do for long.

I have tried wearing a hat but it's basically impossible to keep it on and in the right place as I put on the head. The back of the head is just cloth so there's no way I can pad the back to keep my face forward. I tried stuffing a hat under my jaw but there's the same problem of keeping it in place and it really wasn't that effective.

I'm really sad.

What I plan to do is get a hold of some kind of material I can use to pad the head and keep my face where it is supposed to be inside the mask. By my guess I'm going to need a lot of foam, and probably some kind of plate I can affix to the back of the resin mask to help stop it sliding forward. The elastic straps on the back of the resin mask don't seem to be enough to keep it from sliding off. Padding the straps is not very effective because the straps are very stretchy.

I have no idea what kind of materials I should be looking for but I know a lot of you people will know!

I am wondering if I can offer up a trade. I have a CarnFX Leopard Jawset.

I was planning on keeping it in case a tooth broke in the mask or if I was going to build a head on my own. I'm wondering if I can trade it to someone for some foam or whatever supplies will help me to pad the mask out so it will fit my face properly. It's absolutely huge on my face so I'm afraid I'm going to need a lot of whatever it is.

The jaws are very nice and incredibly lightweight, no flaws that I can tell of. It's 4" at the widest point across and about 4" long. If not for the lower teeth already installed in my mask, it'd fit inside the resin blank really well but it doesn't quite interlock with the sculpy teeth already installed. I am just holding them in place here so forgive the slight crooked look. They'd fit great.

It is cast from bone so would need to be painted or have gums sculpted over them.

I live in the UK. I'm willing to ship the jawset anywhere worldwide in exchange for what I need. :) Thanks for your advice and consideration.

Balaclava suppliers?

So this weekend, I was talking with a close friend of mine. I mentioned my fursuit I was working on and she joked on how we should wear one and go around our local mall and shop. Well, personally I thought that was a great idea and offered to make a suit for her, even though it was a joke. So I'm putting aside an old fursuit head I never finished and finished up as a side project and I'm going to make a shiny Umbreon for her and a Jolteon for me. Both will be partials minus the feet. Well, with that other head, it was plastic canvas and foam. I didn't like it so I'm doing the balaclava and foam base. Problem is, I can't find any good balaclava sellers. Does anyone know a seller who sells good quality and cheap (under 10 dollars) that ships to the US? Sorry for the long post, and thanks :)

Accessories that say "Girl" without cramping the feral look

I'm making a werewolf for an upcoming horror convention. I've mentioned her before. Here's a refresher at her appearance. I'm keeping it simple because its only my second fullsuit ever and I'm so scared to try anything really fancy when it comes to markings.

I don't want to miss out on any opportunity to suit. I love pictures. However, as a newer suiter, I've discovered, the public isn't as familiar and   as artistically observant as I can be. I get mistaken for a he or a species that has nothing to do with what I am.

This werewolf is a feral sort. Well, her personality is rather feral. I don't want anything that's too cutesy. Not an oversized collar or anything like that. I don't want a bosom either(I'll have some type of bosom because I am female myself, but not a suit bosom). What are some artistic illusions I can create in the furring job, the eyes, and with accessories that say, "Hint-hint, I'm a she!" This suit is semi to completely realistic. I don't plan on doing toony eyes.

Is there any way I could perform to depict I'm she, but keep my feral behaviors? When I say Feral I mean curiously observing things, skittering around on all fours, snarling or various whatnot. You know, that's what werewolves do. Kinda cliche, but for this bunch of people that's what they expect.

I was thinking about a loin cloth, but males wear loin cloths and they are identified as such. My werewolf isn't the clothing wearing type. Should she wear anything at all? Would it really matter with people in public who just want your picture and desire to know nothing more about you, right or wrong? I guess I want to know if it would really make a difference if I tried. It seems like an interesting study for those not familiar with fursuits.

Could I put daimond-like studs on a thick leather collar? Give her primitive jewelries? Feathers? Beads? She is sentient, she could have a society of some sort, wherever she resides.

Perhaps, I'm worrying too much about this?

So, the interent is being unhelpful. Figured someone on here might know.

I'm looking for foam for a fursuit, but not upholstry foam or anything similar. Due to heating issues, I was hoping to find some of the foam that is used in speakers and headphones. You know, the type that lets air through very easily (aka, let's you hear the sound, but protects the speaker from dust or cushions your ears).

I can't find what it's called, though. All my searches yield dampening materials (used in sound-blocking), which is very much what I don't want.

Any clue what the speaker foam is called? Or maybe where to buy it from in bulk/sheets? Thanks in advance!

how do I paint on this?

Hey Ive seen this material used on eyes a lot, and I like it more than buckram. unfortunately it's extremely hard to paint on without chipping off, although I've found if I color it with sharpie then paint it, it seems to stick a lot better. is there a better way? Ive tried sanding, priming first (that seems to clog up the little holes easier) 2013-04-24 11.58.31

Hi everyone,
Been a long time since I posted  but I've finally finished a new suit!
I'm pretty happy with most of it, the eyes are at slightly different angles and theres a slight wrinkle beside the right eye but I gave it my best shot! The commissioner seems happy.
If theres anything else you can see to critique please feel free. Working with fleece was so, so hard!
