Cockatiel Crest + Beak (& Fosshape) Question

Cockatiel

So I've been doodling mask concepts and have decided to try a lutino cockatiel. I've realized that there's 2 snags I could potentially hit with this, and I'm wondering the following.

Crest: Since no fur really is entirely long enough, do you thing employing the use of acrylic yarn threaded into the head at the proper length and styled would work out? Any better ideas at all? I don't have the budget for any NFT as much as I wish to use it. I can, however, snag some yarn easily enough. (Also, can you dry brush acrylic yarn the same way you can acrylic fur? I assume you can, but I need to double check for color matching.)

Beak: I'm interested in using fosshape for the beak (which will be static.) This will be on a foam base, so would it be possible to glue it on? Is there a better way to attach it? Which one would you recommend using, the 600 or 300?

Also anyone with experience regarding fosshape, I'd love to hear what you have to say!

Coloring Resin Problems

Recently I started using coloring pigments to color my resins. I have used both Smooth-Cast 300 and Color-Pro Resin with the proper coloring agents but have gotten a problem each time. For some reason the colors get a swirl effect when it should be all the same color.

Here are some examples:

Picture 297Picture 289Picture 292Picture 282Picture 294

The one with the red is Smooth-Cast 300 while the others are from the Color-Pro. The first time I used the Color-Pro resin they did not swirl at all.

I mixed the Part B resin before mixing it with Part A as instructed.

Does anyone know what i did wrong?

Bubble while furring a head?

Hi guys. I swear, I would love making fursuits if furring wasn't so ridiculously hard for me. I've basically tried furring three head so far. Each attempt is always better than the last, but so far the most promising one has also got me the most frustrated.

I've read tutorial after tutorial. Matrices, Razzy_Lee's, older videos that aren't up anymore, just everything. I make ducktape patterns, I reverse them, I sew darts, everything. little to no seam allowance on the fabric itself and tight sewing...

ANd some how it still doesn't work! I don't get it! The most recent head I'm working on has some fairly promising shape, a few bulky bits but it was great for practice. Most of the sewing has gone along fine up until the moment I had sewn one of the cheeks. I placed it on the base to test the seating and low and behold I've got the most massive bubble you can imagine. There are also places where the fur doesn't fit the nooks and crannies like they should.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I have absolutely no idea. I'm about ready to just hang up my hat in defeat. Any final tips or advice? Because I'm at a total complete loss.

I heard a faux fur product called Velboa.

Did anyone used that short pile fur before? And so, what is the negatives and positives about it?

some simple tips

Well there are some things I found to make things quicker and cheaper. Remember though cheaper dosen't always mean better. Ok so here we go!

Autozone has car washing sponges that make awesome foam. They are very thick and are easy to cut.I use them a lot for muzzles and facial features. http://www.autozone.com/autozone/accessories/AutoZone-Easy-grip-bone-sponge/_/N-25vs?itemIdentifier=558601_0_0_They also have microfiber cloths which make a cheap substitute for short fur.http://www.autozone.com/autozone/accessories/AutoZone-6-pcs-microfiber-ultra-soft-spa-polish-towel/_/N-255s?itemIdentifier=87784

Joanns has darice designer craft fur , which can be dyed with some paint. The fur is nice for detailings or for your whole suit!http://fursuit.livejournal.com/5737298.html

Simple eyes can be made out of some paper. Color the iris with whatever you like and cut a circle in the middle. Laminate your eyes to make them shiny and durable. Cut the hole in the middle out once again. Stretch a square of black nylons across the back to make the pupil. Glue it down. Yay! Easy eyes! If you want semi-following eyes, once you get to the laminating stage, simply take your fursuit eye and press it to a bowl (color side down while it is still hot) to get a curve in it. They should appear to follow you! You can see an example of them in here: http://fursuit.livejournal.com/5744564.html

Is it better to install eyes before furring, or after furring? I've always done it before furring, but it seems like they are smaller by the time I get the fur on...

Suggested Thumb Support?

Bit of a random one, but I dunno if any of you could recommend a good thumb support that is easy enough to use whilst using scissors?
Recently been getting back into suit making after a hiatus, and I had to stop for a couple weeks after I hurt my index finger and twinged a nerve in my thumb whilst carving with scissors. Came back to it today after two weeks to heal, and straight away my thumb went again, making it impossible to do anything and I had to give up.

So yeah, any good thumb support brands? Needs support on the inside of the thumb, where it rests against the scissor handle :3

Question about the fully body of fursuit

I have a question about how to make a fursuit (with fully joined body)
example: http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2012/204/e/d/mlp_pony_fursuit_costume_new___firesparcle____g3_5_by_atalonthedeer-d58e1ja.jpg (by Atalonthe Deer)

but I can do it with duct tape, for example. (I know how to do a duct tape, but I don't know what to do with it later. especially if I have to make a costume with digitigrade legs and hoofs.)

Or is it better make the costume with a "body" (the suit that covers the entire body mostly used for gymnastics) ? and place foam after... How in this case is cover with the fur?

i'm very confused about this and I wish someone would explain in detail that I should do (or a tutorial.)

Thank you.

Rough Pinning of the Fur. More pictures and the progress available at http://www.furaffinity.net/user/fang123/

My thanks to those who have given so much advice and constructive criticism in the past. I'd like to think it's paying off. :3

I'm going to attempt to sew most of the seams together and use a minimal amount of glue. Perhaps a bit around the mouth.

Please let me know if I'm on the right track! I'm getting more and more nervous as I continue!

Any hurdles you guys and gals can think of that you encountered around this stage that you could share to help me avoid?

Question: Finding faux fur in mainland Europe

Hi all,

Does anyone know a good webstore for buying high-quality fake fur based in Europe?
I know about US based websites, but the shipping prices are really prohibitive for regular, long-term purchasing. For UK based stores, I fear the same is true, though I haven't tested extensively.
Yes there are plenty of fabric stores and markets near where I live, but none of them stock fur out of season.

Surely there must be plenty of other crafters in the Netherlands and also Germany - will you please share your secrets where you find your furs?

3D eyes?

Hey guys, I have a question that has been bugging me for quite some time.
Concerning 3D eyes, I was really wondering how you deal with hiding the edge between the actual eye and the optical illusion part.
If you're confused, here's a quick reference:

gfjgsf

I have seen MANY follow me eyes that are absolutely gorgeous, much like OneFurAll's and DHC's, which somehow disguise this very well.
Does anyone have any tips or tricks they wouldn't mind sharing? :S

Ear weights?

Im making a floppy eared mutt, and i want the ears to have some weight to them. I don't want any type of metal in the ears (magnets, fishing weights, etc) because it could possibly rust. :P Are there any other good alternatives? I was thinking poly-pellets but that'll make noise when bouncing around, so something quiet and non metal would be great. :)

Shasta WIP (Need Redline Help)

So I've started working on my fursona Shasta. I recently finished Trune and her YT page is
http://www.youtube.com/user/TruneThePony Anyway, so I've only made one fursuit before and I'm kind of a noob. I normally sketch, not anything on computer, but I recently tried a paint drawing of her for you guys so I'll post that just for reference of the cuteness I'm going for. -

I just started foaming the head and I need some help. Here are some pics-

I feel like that pony style has invaded into my Shasta fursona, T_T I've never done a cat before. I know that the cheeks should be higher, I just noticed that, but it would be wonderful if someone could help me with perception, what to fix, maybe a redline?
This is the lioness type of head I'm going for-

I have no idea how to get the ears like that without I guess adding foam around the edges? Oh, she has a moving jaw, but I didn't post the video of the test yet.

AN IDEA!!

This is my idea! I have no idea if it will actually be possible/practical so I am asking you lovely people. <3
So recently I've been dabbling in 3D sculpture with the program Sculptris, and I absolutely love it! :D
I wanted to make a fursuit head and all of my attempted 2D references were complete suck, so I was like, this is a 3D project, so Imma make a 3D ref!
So I began, and in an hour or two I had this:
(It's really bad quality because my computer can't handle nice graphics)

I started off wanting something canine, but halfway through it began to look like a bear so I just went with it and made it a bear.

SO MY IDEA IS if I could somehow 3D print this, make a mold of the 3D printed shape, and then cast the mold in some sort of poly foam like they do for some special effect makeups (or resin I guess), and VOILA. Head base.
So it's pretty much exactly like the whole process of sculpting and resin casting for a base, only this is sculpted on a computer.

Is this crazy or workable?

Foot dyed blue unintentionally

Okay, I was drying a white fursuit foot with some other clothes and I took those clothes out. Well, I stuck the foot back in because it wasn't dry yet. I had surfaced washed it. Bye the way, the dryer was on FLUFF. AIR ONLY. Now I have a blue foot and I don't know how to get rid of the dye. Any suggestions? I'm panicking right now. The entire fursuit is white! Not blue! How can I get dye out of fur and return the fur to its normal color? I have learned my lesson, well, with using a dryer.

can I save a Sculpy nose that is too heavy?

Hello everyone,

So I made a nose for my current project and was so happy with how it came out. Then I quickly lost my happiness when I glued it on and it made the upper jaw droop considerably from the weight of the nose. The nose might be able to be hollowed out. But IS there a way to hollow out Sculpy clay after it has already been baked? I really, really don't want to have to toss this nose I took so long to make.

Thanks guys. If it helps I will try to get pics up later. But I'm working with a new computer and pictures are so much harder to post :(

Handsewing a Tail Closed

I made this video a few weeks ago. Sort of a thank you to the folks who have reached out and told me about how much my videos and tutorials have helped them :3

It's just a quick example of two easy ways to sew those tails shut after you stuff them with polyfill. Foam tails are similar but too varied to really make a tutorial for.

Raptor eyes

Im currently making a raptor mask and I found some clear cabochon's to use for the eyes. Problem is I do not like to paint those little details and I cant find any already painted eyes that are big enough. Ive seen some suits where they printed out the eyes but I think I only saw those for toony eyes. Is there a place where I can find easy printouts for realistic eyes? Or am I just typing the wrong thing into google images? I found some clear images of some eyes that someone was selling on ebay could I just print those out? below is the eyes I am talking about
