World of Warcraft Blue Wind Rider

A future suit I want to do into next year for Comic-Con has me a bit eluded. I wanted to do a scorpion tail for a  World of Warcraft Wyvern or Wind Rider for the Horde.

There are several other things about the suit that I want to be practical with, but if I can do it, I want to do it.

This is the culprit. This guy, right here...
I wanted to be realistic with the size of the wings. I want them to be bigger than usual for wings that are designed this way on a fursuit. I've seen Pteradactyl fursuits with wings that were much smaller than these. How big would be appropriate? I've seen bat suits and flying dinosaur fursuits with wings much smaller than I want to do. Should I stay about that small or can I get away with bigger?

My question with the wings is, should they stay smallish so I can fold them and walk with them or can I get bigger and learn how to be conscious of them in their sheer size?

Now, for the tail. The tail, drawn here isn't very scorpion-like, I know. Fleece would coat the tail. Should the skeleton of the tail be solid foam or hollow foam?

I've noticed I like longish tails, so I might start making tail leashes for my fursuits. With SnowBunny,I found myself carrying my tail quite a bit. Mostly to keep people from stepping on it.

Well for anyone who was curious here is my most recent version of my head http://www.furaffinity.net/view/10350337/ Yes I am aware i need to clean up around the mouth, fill in the white parts on the nose, and I am having someone airbrush my black on the muzzle.

Amount of fur?

I've decided I'd like to learn how to make digitigrade legs for some of my suits over the summer, and to do so, I've chosen to make a set of faun legs for a ren fest in the fall that I'll be attending.

However, I'm somewhat unsure of how much fur I'll need.

I'm fairly small (5'1, average build), and when I made my last fullsuit, she only took three yards of fur for her head, hands, body, feet, and tail. She wasn't digitigrade however.

Do you guys think I could get by with just a yard of fur? I don't really wanna buy more than I'll have to, especially since my storage space is extremely small, but I'm not sure how much of a difference the padding will make with the amount of fur used.

Also, I'd just like opinions on this, grey or brown faun?

He'll have some black markings as well, but I cannot decide between the two undercoat colors

Cthulhu Fursuit Project----LOTS of help needed!! ((Edited))

*EDIT* Ignore # of posts. I reply to every post, and all help would be wonderful!

Well, I finally decided on the project I want to make this year, since it will go with all the themes of parties I will be attending. Allow me to introduce: The "Kawaiithulhu" I found out that my design is surprisingly similar to Chibithulu from the card game munchkin Cthulhu. I <3 munchkin and didn't know this existed until now, so this is what I am doing. Here is a side by side of my "original" idea and the plushie Chibithulu.

(First one is the very quick drawing I made this morning with lazer mouse, lol)

Anyways I was thinking of doing vision through the enlarged eyes on chibithulu, or adding the blush and doing vision out of there using pink material. I also plan on using fleece for the main material.

An existing fursuit for shape reference:

For the head I already made a ball out of plastic canvas that I can stick my head into. It is very roomy and allows for ventilation and room for a fan, but am now a bit concerned about reinforcing the ball, as it seems to want to bend inwards instead of out.

I have until Halloween to finish this costume.

ANY help, suggestions, links, etc will be VERY helpful. Basically I need help with making such a large, round head, changing the body shape, and hiding fleece seams, but every bit of advice helps!

Chicken Wire Mascot Head---Question about inside?

Sorry to post again so soon, but I need specific help on my head. In my previous post I got some very wonderful information and lots of help on how to construct my "Chibithulhu" Cosplay Fursuit. I decided to go with Hyokenseisou-Cosplay's Wiz Head Tutorial, using chicken wire, batting, and foam. I have gotten the first step done but am now wondering---How do I make sure the INSIDE of the head is safe? I don't want any pokey/scratchy metal getting at me. Should I just line the inside like I would the outside? Or is there a better way? I also plan on installing a small fan, so how will this effect how I go about doing this?

Thank you for tolerating my newbie questions. ^.^'

Head foaming preference?

HI everybody!
I need head foam preferences for a fursuit head I'm working on
I've done both ways but want to see what you all think is best!

So do you think this kind is better?
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/8665948/

Or this kind?
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/5415601/

Basically, is it better to have half foam heads w/ balaclava, or all covered foam heads w/balaclava?
I could save on foam, but I've seen a few people use the first method and wonder if it's better..

Thanks!

(P.S. Neither are my work, just examples. I will take down if requested :))

Head-Base commissions prices

I've got over my whiney mess and I'm going to just do this instead of talking myself around it. What is a good starting price for a static jaw head-base by a novice? I've made five heads, furred three, but no, I am no MASTER, but I'm not stumbling over myself with building a head in space either. I think I have a nice shape to all my heads.

I don't want to over price my stuff because my skill isn't THAT great. I'm starting heads at $40 dollars. Is that...all right? Should I make it a bit cheaper like $35? Also, how do I determine shipping costs?

Below are my head bases that had the best WIP photos.

 I've got my paypal set up, how in the world do I get hooked up with people to hit a button and pay with a card? I have no clue about this thing, its taken me two years to get my account set up >__< Because I didn't understand how it worked. ^^;;;

If it helps, I plan to advertise with an advertisement I'm making, on FA and DeviantArt. Do my customers need a paypal too and its done between my account and theirs?

ONe last thing, how do I determine how much people should pay me, up front, before I start on a head for them? As you can see, I have NO CLUE about commissions, which is why I wanted to wait quite a bit longer so I knew how I worked better. Don't have a choice at this point, I need the extra funds, lol.

Fursuit "mask"?

$

Hi, community! Here's what I'm pondering.

I have very long hair. My fursona - surprise, surprise - does as well. If I were to wear a fursuit head, I'd have to bunch up my hair under a wig cap on top of my head and then put the fursuit head over it. I've worn wigs for cosplaying before, and it gets pretty gross and sweaty under those, so it'd probably be worse under an enclosed fur head with little ventilation. Plus, if I wanted to accurately portray my character, I'd have to buy a wig and attach that to the fursuit head as well.

It would be a lot easier if I had what amounted to a fursuit mask - just the face, with the entire back and some of the top of the head open, and probably using a strap or something to hold it on. Do you think that would work, structurally? Would the weight of the foam, fur, etc. be supported without slipping down? My character's a cheetah, so there isn't a very large muzzle to be held up. And would it look okay, or would the sudden thickness of the face be too weird?

If this has been done before, I'd love to see pictures. I did a quick search with no results.

Hey all. c:

I'll be making a house-cat head soon, and if it turns out good and sturdy I'm going to sell it. Though there are a couple of things that I'd like to know about what the general population of buyers prefers:

1. Moving jaw or static jaw?
2. Follow-me eyes or forward eyes? (unfortunately I cannot acquire resin/glass eyes at this time)
3. Is there an "average" head size? My head seems to be pretty small in comparison to other people, so I probably won't make it to my head.
4. Toony, realistic, or in between?

Also, is there any sort of coating that will make polymer clay stronger? I make teeth and claws from clay, but am always uneasy about how fragile they are.

Query about dyeing fur: getting a varigation of tints in the fur so it goes from dark to light

I have looked though the memories and didn't find an entry addressing my question specifically, so I figured I'd ask. Can't hurt, right? :)

I understand that dyeing fur isn't easy, and the best ways involve acrylic paints thinned with water, brushed/painted into the fur, and then dried while brushing so the pigment adheres to the fur but doesn't completely clump the fur. It looks great in all the examples I've seen, and does get the job done.

However, what about varying colors into the dyed fur? For example, if I wanted the base of a tail to have a deep tint of a color and the tip of the tail to have a light tint of a color, with the fur getting progressingly lighter as it goes down? The best I can think of is to dye the fur in tiny stripes as it goes from the dark to the light color, but I was wondering if there was a different/better way that someone else has discovered.

Because the area is so large, I didn't think spray paint or airbrushing would work (all the tutorials for both say to use these for small, detailed work, not coloring a giant part of the fursuit), although since this wouldn't be for highly defined work (having the colors run a bit as the fur is brushed would probably help the effect), it might do fine.

I'm just not sure what others have tried and found to be successful or unsuccessful. If anybody has some advice, I would greatly appreciated it. I'd rather not try a technique that someone else has done and can verify does not work, but I'm definitely open to experimention.

(And if anyone needs a visual to get what the heck I'm saying, the white/red dress in the bottom panel here is a good example of the type of color change I'm trying to achieve: http://beyondtheveilcomic.com/?p=410)

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Casting hollow clear resin horns?

$

Hey guys,

OK, the thing is, one of the next parts of my head will be a pair of horns, which I want to make out of clear resin (this being so I can stick LEDs inside them, and leave exposed spots in the paint so I get light spots down the length of the horns when they are switched on). But I have a feeling that the best thing would be to make them hollow, so I can get the LEDs in there, and also to reduce weight as much as possible.

My plan is to make the sculpt, and then the silicone mold - and then cut the mold in half, and cast each side separately and stick them together. Is this an acceptable way of going about what I'm trying to do? Or is there a better way? (I'm going for highly realistic horns, apart from the light spots)

I was just wondering, what is the best way to go about making a more or less hollow horn 'half' from the resin? I assumed it can't be slush cast like polyurethane resin. Has anyone had any experience of doing something like this? I would greatly appreciate advice from people who know more about this than me :P

Thank you guys :)

Ready to take Commissions?--ImageHeavy

Hello everyone! I was wondering if I could poke around in your seasoned minds for some advice and opinions on a matter I've been thinking about for quite some time..
eyes

In total, I have made ten heads, recently completing the tenth a day ago, and over that course of making heads, I've learned a great deal about interior structure and mechanics, exterior furring, add-on sculpting, and detailing. From starting out with plastic/aluminum mesh heads for the first two, and moving on to resin-based heads, I have developed a working method that works for me, and have been working to improve it. I feel that I am ready to take commissions for heads, as I am at a point where I am extremely pleased with how the most recent heads I have made turned out, and I really, really, really want to push forward and continue learning.

I've sculpted jawsets to fit my own bases, as well as made a lovely pair of horns for a past halloween head, and I'm wanting to delve in to silicone casting to make tongues, pawpads, and other nifty accessories. I'm also working to make a 3/4 suit as an end-of-semester project/gift for myself to wear to furmeets/cons.

What I am asking, if you could excuse my rambling (;A; I'm really nervous about this) is if I should start to take head and/or partial commissions, and if so, how would I go about spreading the word to get commissioners? I've already been commissioned for a 'finished' head base (that both the customer and I were very happy with). c:

Here are some of the things I've made as a visual reference...

Thank you for any input, I greatly appreciate it <3

Really tight...

I finally did a duct tape pattern on my head! It looks great, but when I went to put the head on again, it fit like a glove, which is great, but bad, because it smashes my glasses to my face on the way in (it smudges them badly!). I think it's because the duct tape on the back of the head doesn't really allow for stretch. It did not have this problem beforehand.

I figure I can install a zipper up the back so the fur isn't so tight, but Bryndle is getting a hairstyle, so how would this work?

Below is a link to her reference sheet so you can see what I mean.

Also, how much kanekalon (and what specific color) would I need for that kind of hair?

Thanks everyone! :)

What do you make your padding out of?

$

So my wife's fursuit has huge padding in the legs: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/6020830/ Originally, it was all foam. Due to weight and heat, I switched the large thigh padding to polyfil, and I'm trying to figure out ways to make the ankles/feet polyfil as well. But it got me wondering: what do others make their padding out of? I've seen suits with dropped crotches and large amounts of padding, and I can't wrap my mind around how the padding could be anything other than foam--because how on earth do you make pillows for padding that wraps completely around something?

I think I'm basically asking, if you do something other than just stick the foam into the suit for large padding, what's it made out of, and how do you do it/attach it to the suit?

Back of the head help?

One of my best friends commissioned me to make a fursuit head of his OC and so far everything's been going GREAT and the head looks amazing! I'm really proud with how it's turning out.

I just have one issue: The base is a balaclava base. However, I want to make it so that way the head can fit most people without having to use a zipper.

He owns a few other fursuit heads and I'm deathly afraid of screwing up and having it not fit him or having it too big. Most importantly, I want it to fit him (24"), but if there's a technique for making it fit anybody that'd be great!

I haven't worked with balaclavas in 2 years and I LOVE this method, but the back of the head is going to be killer... Is it possible to make a skin out of fur, sew it along where the facial fur ends and then sew the bottom of the balaclava to the bottom of that?

Thanks! :D

Just Received! How to Fix?

$

Well, I ended up getting a lioness partial done rather than make it myself.
I received it today, and I have a few questions. This is my first suit. Pics below the cut!

I'm pretty happy with the head's construction, seems to be made well and there's no foam showing or anything. The moving jaw works really well. It's comfy, but I need to improve the fit a little as when I try to open my jaw, it just slides the mask forward. When I put on a thin beanie and tried again that really helped quite a lot, but the back of the neck is sewn shut so it's hard to keep the beanie on properly when I slip the cowl on over my head. So, I'm thinking that I need to actually attach some kind of padding strips to key areas on the inside of the head. What's the best way to go about doing this? It's a resin mask on the inside. I should also note that the rubber nose and pads seems to have little flecks of white and stuff on them? This might be after effects of casting or something. They don't come off by just rubbing gently so I figure I will need to wash them somehow, is there anything special I need to know about cleaning rubber on suits?

The handpaws are cute! The claws are attached very well and seem pretty sturdy, but the palm pawpads seem to be kind of falling off one of them. They are made of some kind of soft rubber and I think they've been hotglued on (this seems reasonable to me though because I don't think you can stitch rubber?) One of the paws seems mostly OK, but I fear that with wear it'll go the same way.

I will be contacting the maker about this to let them know, but I thought since it's my first suit I'd ask for advice. Shipping it back to the maker isn't really cost-effective for me at this point as they are overseas from me, so I feel I'll need to do any alterations myself. I'm OK with this but I'd like to know how to proceed.

1) I've worked on my foam head a bit more, i'd like to know if it's ready to be furred or if it still needs some work.
2) how does one go about making the "hood" part of the mask? does anyone have any tutorials or could they try to explain? i'm not sure if i should try and get measurements or make some sort of cast/mold/pattern.
