Money Troubles...

I've found the perfect fur to start on my Ewok costume for the StarWars costuming association, but I can't afford the fur. I'm good at fursuit building, I've seen great improvement, but I can't afford or get help with the development of my talents or building a personal business. Due to certain circumstances I do not have a job, nor can I return to school. So money is little to nothing, even though I've been complimented on my how good my work is.
Any advice on how I could get sponsorship or make, at least, 60 bucks within the next few days to get the fur? Also, I hope I don't sound like a conceded person, I'm not trying to be, I just know I'm good at this and I want to make more costumes, but I can't afford to. :/

Thank you for all of your advice. Unfortunately, I'm so crippled right now, I can't achieve any of the suggested advice. I think I'm just out of luck with this deal. Thank you again, guys, I appreciate it.

Solved: The OMG Cat Hanging Jaw Problem with Dorumon Head! 'O'

Hey guys!!!! I'm on my last few modifications on my head and I have the famous OMG CAT expression! It's the jaw XD

I kept thinking tightening the elastic would fix it because I held my hand up on the elastic and it seemed to look well, so I tightened the straps 2-3 times and now its snug and I can't make it more snug due to possible discomfort. I may have messed up the elastic because I found lots of fur from the head was glued to the jaw and it didn't function obviously it was a mistake- when I noticed I disconnected the jaw fur from the head fur XD

Although the jaw is perfectly against my jaw just fine and comfortable, it just likes to hang. I hold it up in one photo as shown and when I let go you can see the result....

IMG_0030
IMG_0031IMG_0027

The elastic is wrapped around directly above my head and another strap is going an inch or so above the tips of my ears around my head...
This did work before I did the furring accident, I am wondering if this is a cause from the weight of the fur from the jaw or anything, how can I fix this?

PS. The famous OMG cat is a cat with an actual jaw fracture, there are videos of the poor feline who can't eat without being fed from an eye dropper/tube, at least it used to be fractured. I always feel bad about that kitty being popular for something so sad ;_;

EDIT: Ahhhh I actually just figured it out. I just needed to make the elastic wrap around the jaw foam some more so there's more like a lever to be moved rather than one point of the jaw being attached to the elastic. You may delete this if needed unless this may help someone out of course ^_^

Binturong fursuit!

Hey guys!
I finished up a really cool project that I am SO excited to show you!

P4070226

It is malameux's character, a Binturong!
He hasn't decided on a name yet, but Binturong is working for now. :3

malameux is my boyfriend of over 7 years, and he finally has a fursuit for himself. He's shared many of my fursuits, and even had some of animals that became his character for a bit in the past, but this one was built just for him of his own character. :D

DSC01479

This guy has lots of features!
The entire head was built to be washable, made on a 1/2 inch foam base, fully lined with ear vents, and a soft stuffed and detailed lycra nose. I tried a new eye style using plastic as the eye mesh, it is painted in acrylic paint and sealed.

binturong face

The nose is also a new design, made from lycra and interfacing sewn to resemble a Binturong's unique nose shape. I took progress pictures as I sewed up the nose and posted the pic series over Twitter when I was working it out! Not exactly a tutorial, but shows its construction!

I backed it with fleece and cut a slit in the fleece to turn it and stuff it, and stuffed it with Polyfil, then I sewed the edge of the nose (so the fleece backing would not show but would hold in the stuffing) to the muzzle. Then I took a dollmaker's needle (a very long thin needle) and sewed the nostrils down through all layers of the muzzle.

The long white whiskers are nylon, I acquired more than I needed and have whiskers now for sale in my etsy store!

Additionally every single white hair is made of brushed out yarn that has been hand tied into the backing, it is more apparent in person, but the hairs are on the face, back of the head, elbows, and chest. The ear tufts are also navy blue and black brushed out yarn pieces tied into the backing of the tip of the ear fur. I will later be adding NFT fur for longer ear tufts.

close ups

Hand and feetpaws are detailed with the print-shape of a Binturong they aren't an animal that has paw pads really, more of a leathery paw shape, but I had to adapt it to a human glove so I went with the print shape appliqued on in Marine Vinyl. The footpaws are washable with a removable outer shell. The fingers and toes have soft claws.

The tail is as long as the body, inside is a string to make the tail curl up so it does not touch the ground. Binturongs as a species have a prehensile tail, and this was as close we could get to that sort of thing while keeping it a simple design, I'm pretty proud of that! The tail is attached to the bodysuit, but able to be removed for washing via a zipper around the tail's base.

The body has a dropped crotch to extend the length of the body, so he looks longer and also so the hind legs are stubbier looking, the legs are 20 inches long. Binturongs as far as we can tell from tracks and videos are plantigrade animals (they seem to primarily use their whole foot to walk, stand and climb), so he has plantigrade footpaws and padded out haunches to match the animal's shape. The inside padding is one piece.

Binturong-Final

The long fur is Royal Blue Supershag acquired from I'm Stuffed Fur, The Navy blue on the toes, ear backs and fingertips was from Mendel's, the Royal Blue on the tummy, arms, tailtip and legs was from Fabric.com and the cream on the muzzle, ears and eyedots I had found locally, there is also a very small amount of an amazing seal navy blue on the inner ears and eyebrows that my friend Apoxon gave me.

FYI, I'm always open to critique on fursuit-related stuff. I'm always trying to improve & figure out different ways to do stuff.

I am so proud of this costume! :D I finished the main construction of the head April 2nd 2013, finished the body April 6 2013.

*shyly walks in*

Hello everyone~ I'm a little new here...

I've been making fursuits only for a little while.. I've made 4 partials so far, and no fullsuits yet... I do hope to do one soon...
This is my most recent work, trying out a complete foam base head, as I normally have been working with a wire and ducktape base (in my mind, it feels easier... ._. ):

601213_112537365592629_1514684500_n

I'm still a little rough around the edges, as you can see.... I know I have trouble getting the fur to lay completely flat.. ._. input would be nice ^^

But I hope to learn from everyone here ^^

Pre Washing, Shrinking Uncut Fur?

I am posting this because I have fur coming in from CR's Crafts to replace fur on parts of my Victor Redtail Fursuit. I am wondering when I get the fur in rather or not I should wash it in cold water to try to pre shrink it and get the dyes out and then air drying it and brushing it or not? I know for many fabrics you have to do that for this reason and I am wondering if I should do that to Fur? Hope to hear from ya on this.

Listening to music while wearing fursuit.

Whinnyhi.

I keep wanting to listen to my Ipod while suiting (for dancing, mostly) and trying to figure out a good way to have ear phones. Of course big ones will not fit but ear buds will. Only one problem... how to keep them nicely fitted in my human ears because putting the head on often pulls one or the other or both out of position and then the music is muted or uneven or worse one pulls clear out.

I try my best to be careful but the head is fairly snug (how I want it) and invariably one or both come loose or out of good adjustment.

Wondering if anybody here has experience with this.

Ideally I would incorporate ear phones as part of the head and on my next one I hope to do just that. Not buds but normal type earphones. Probably have to dismantle them and remove the head strap portion and install the speakers directly but still not sure how. Suggestions or experiences?

Headed off to Furry Connection North in three days so excited since I love fursuiting.

Steed the yellow horse of course.

I'm trying to work out a concept for digitigrade-looking boots. I don't want full digitigrade legs like I've seen pictures of.  I've got a couple sketches under the cut of the sort of idea I'd like to try.  This is my first time working on a fursuit, so any tips or comments would be helpful.

Need help ASAP: Hot Glue is not sticking well to white foam! Help needed!

standard medium foam 1" white from http://www.foamforyou.com/Open_Cell_Foam.htm

My hot glue I bought in bulk, 400+ sticks for $80ish, and it works fine on green foam! That's why I decided to use it and keep at it....
I just recently bought the foam above and whenever I put pieces together, after it dries, if I tug it a little bit it actually makes a ripping sound and it comes apart..... This isn't what I expected and this isn't the same durability as using the green foam with this same glue....

I tried putting fleece on top of the foam and in between foam and glue to make it more sturdy but it simply makes the same noise and does the same thing to the fleece...

I'm sorry I posted just yesterday but I really really need some advice, i'm attending FCN and this isn't working like I wanted, I really do appreciate any help.... ;u;

Eyes help?

how do You make fursuit Eyes?

I'm working on my third fursuit, and so far I've had problems with the eyes on all of them.

the first, i made eyes buckrum, painters tape, and colored it with craola markers. when i remove the head, I'm left with marking on my face from the markers.

the second, i used foamies, thicker markers, and buckrum.
my face looks like i made out with markers, and the coloring is now melting and smeared across the eyes.

the third, I'm using poster board, buckrum, and acrilic paint. i have added water to the paint, but no matter what i do, It's to thick to see out of.

why is all this happening? and how can i make an decent pair of eyes that won't Mark my face or need to be replaced later on?

buying anything New is not an option, so some how i need the things i have used before to work.

need help with muzzle!!!

sockpaws??

I'd like to start out by saying I apologize if I've posted this in the wrong place!
I've never used livejournal before. ):

I'd also like to mention that I have no experience fursuiting and I just need to make simple sockpaws for a cosplay I'm working on, but I'm a total dummy and even though I've read through a lot of tutorials for how to make them, I really just can't get it right whenever I try! (I accidentally cut out my pattern pieces backwards once ahaha .. . )

My main issues are as follows;
- I'm fairly certain I'm taping over the foam wrong? when I cut off the tape for my pattern, they won't lie flat, and they also stick to the foam too much and pull some of it off (which I'm not sure is a huge issue?)

- My feet are kind of narrow and I was wondering if that might be an issue of some sort visually?? The toes look a little weird on a thin base...

- I'm unsure where to have the seams / where to cut the duct tape off of my base. Do you cut around each toe individually?

- Lastly, the fur I got is admittedly kind of cheap (It doesnt need to be extreeemely high quality for my costume though, ahaha!) and it's a little difficult to make seams look nice. This kind of goes with the question above, I'm not sure how to make seams look nice and not as noticeable, as well as where they should be

A lot of really simple newbie questions, sorry!

Thank you in advance for any help, and I apologize again if I goofed and put this in the wrong place!

Alien eyes?

Hello everyone!
I am working on a personal suit- I have no idea what animal she would even be (I guess a cat/ cow hybrid is close enough!) because she is an alien. Anyway, I need to make her eyes and any advice on what material to use would be awesome. I have a picture of her under the cut and more information on what I need help with!

Tinker
Ok, as you can see, her eyes have no pupils. They are dark gray/ black. They need to be about 3 inches wide at the longest point. I want to make them stereotypical "big and shiny" alien eyes, but I don't know what material I could use that would look good and also provide visibility.
I, unfortunately, can't cast resin eyes, which was the process I was originally going to use. My (real) eye placement is too far from where tear ducts would look good.  I thought about using the material they use to make sunglasses, but where could I find lenses that big? If anyone has any advice or suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it. I am willing to experiment with any ideas ^^

Who wants to squeak?

Hello all! :3

An issue presented frequently among fursuiters who want to look cute is, "How can I squeak?"

I've run into this issue many, many times. I've tried squeakers in a paw, cutting out a squeaker and then putting the bit in my mouth and trying not to choke on that after a few attempts of only hearing air blowing through.

After doing A LOT of research, I've finally found a squeaky product that's easy to use and absolutely adorable!

With this!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

What you're looking at is a Swiss Warbler. It's a bird whistle that you put on the roof of your mouth and it produces extremely squeaky and cute noises.

Here's a video of how it works: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZ2ZYohWF9g

I purchased mine recently and I can't say how well it works yet, but my parents remember using it as a kid and some of my older friends do as well.

Thoughts? :D Thanks!

Looking for a close match for maroon/burgundy fur

I recently purchased this incomplete partial originally done by One Eyed Doe! Sadly, the dark red/burgundy fur that was used on the head and tail has been discontinued, as I was informed by the individual selling me the partial.

Here is an image of the ADORABLE suit in question.

I've been looking around a bit, and the Rhubarb from Mendel's seems CLOSE... ish... but I just wanted to pick all of the lovely brains here and see if anyone knew of a lesser known fur that would match this more closely, as I am hoping to make a body suit for it for Otakon!

Raptor mask

Hey all!
so my art teacher assigned our final project today. And well you can do anything you want but it has to be art show worthy. So I want to do a velociraptor mask. I am wanting to make the base to work off of from clay and then let it dry/harden a bit so when I build the mask over it, it wont lose its shape. I already know plaster is too weak and I really do not want to do paper mache unless I have to. Silicone and resin are out of the question just because its way too expensive for me. Also the mask will function just like a resin blank. Any suggestions on materials I could use that is a reasonable price and found in the USA for the base of the mask?
