nostril vision?

hi guys! what you see here is my first attempt at a equine paper mache mask base (still a wip);however, ive made a totally dumb rookie move and ran into a huge problem; my line of site doesn't match up with the sockets or tearducts at all, and aligns with the nostrils instead. from the one thread i found regarding the issue, attempting to see out of the nostrils would result in pretty dismal vision quality. is there any way to make sight out of the nostrils workable? or should I scrap the base and start out with the vision in the right place? any advice or critique would be fantastic! thanks!

Best footwear to build digitigrade paws on?

Hello, fursuiting community!

I have a question regarding digitigrade bodysuits - particularly the legs and feet. I've done a lot of homework on building the head, but the legs have been something that I really can't find much on.

I have seen both the technique of having feetpaws that are seperate from the bodysuit, and feetpaws that are connected to it. I'm aiming for the latter. I want a seamless look like those seen on works by artists such as Arito, and his collaborative account with another maker 'Paws Productions'; RuffledDesigns. An example of the sort of legs I'm aiming for would be much like these: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/4047202/

I'm wondering what sort of footwear you'd build them on, since laces and buckles are out of the question. Socks? Crocs? Is Matrices' method of slip-on shoes the best there is so far? I'd like something as lightweight and breathable as possible.

my dyeing fur tutorial

okay just a simple, easy, (probably less effective and less long lasting,)fur dyeing tutorial. PLEASE NOTE I WOULD ONLY RECOMMEND THIS TUTORIAL FOR SMALL DETAILS ON YOUR FUR!!!!!!
(also I would suggest you test it on a small piece of YOUR type of fur to see if it how you want it.)

now, for the how-to!!

1) get your fur (I used Joann's designer craft fur.http://www.joann.com/darice-designer-fur-deluxe12-x15-white/xprd75874/)
and the acrylic paint you want and water it down a little bit, in a separate bowl.

2) take your brush and paint over your fur, be sure to NOT go ONLY one direction! Also, make sure to paint all the way down to the backing!

3) use a comb to brush it out. Brush it up, down, left, and right! this will separate the fur clumps.

4) ON A COOL SETTING take a blow drier and dry your fur, it is okay to go against the fur direction!

5) brush it out once more and your fur should look nice and pretty!

Wired yarn tail!! :D

Hey, guys.
I just recently started lurking here, and decided to post a thing that I came up with. :D

I've always loved how swishy yarn tails were, and how long the "fur" was compared to stuffed fursuit tails, so I wanted to make a yarn tail for my fursuit that I'm working on.

I ended up figuring out a good and easy wiring method for my yarn tail, by experimenting with my first yarn tail experiment xD

This method is designed for use with a fursuit, with the tail poking out a hole in the suit and the belt beneath the suit.

Okay, here's a picture of me wearing the finished thing!

Sorry for crappy cell phone picture xD

20130404_213353

Due to the way I made my yarn tail (the thick braid of yarn in the center), I was able to cram a wire hanger through the center of the braid.

I then bet the ends to make a large oval shape at the base of the tail, and attached it to a belt. I didn't bother taking a picture of the actual tail because it's so dark in my room xD

Here's an illustration of what I did instead!

wiretail1

wiretail2
wiretail3

You basically sandwich the wire oval base you made with two slices of thick fabric and the belt, then sew around the wire, inside and out!

This would probably be easiest if you use a canvas belt, rather than a leather-textured one.

And in retrospect, I would have done good to braid the yarn tail base around the wire BEFORE I even started on the tail.

But yes! I find that it's very springy, it moves naturally when I walk, wags with ease, and I can pose it any way that I wish. It's fairly lightweight too.
It's also fun to smack people with >:D baha.

Hopefully this will be useful to someone! :]

Juuust a few more misc. questions

I realize it would've been more efficient if I'd gotten all my questions asked in my last post, so let's do that, then!

Beeeig shiny nose!
I love the look of shiny, obnoxiously big, kissable, beepable doggie noses, and this really shows through in my art style! I'd love to incorporate the same thing into my suit. I like this one a LOT: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/10283180/ That's nearly exactly what I need, but I have never worked with resin, and don't otherwise plan to, I'd actually rather commission someone for something like this to be completely honest. If you're interested or know someone who might be, let me know!

Bouncy, springy tail that can stay upright on it's own.
Should I be able to pull off a thin, slightly curly collie tail that stays up and bounces? My character is a cheerful, spry lil pup and I'd rather not see her tail flop down between her legs! It just looks so sad that way.

Stretchy and/or durable short pile fur.
I'd like to find an extra short pile, minky sort of fur in a pure snowy white color for use on the abdomen, groin, and inner leg area that can handle some stretching around without looking terribly baggy over a short period of wear. I want to make it easier to bend down, squat, and in general move around because my suit is going to have some pretty big, pudgy proportions in the toony digitigrade foaming and I want to be able to move as naturally as I can manage! If you have tips or advice for making things more flexible 'down there', I'd really appreciate it!

I believe that's all for now! I may add more later.

Help! Duct tape residue on fur!

$

So I build bodies by pinning the fur around the dummy and then loosely pre-sewing by hand, this method leaves me with a perfectly fitted fully assembled body that can easily be machine sewn by following the dotted line of pre-sewing...

well today to my horror I pulled a body off a duct tape dummy to find the dummy had come apart some... leaving the fur against the tape!!
the suit in question is seal fur, a slicker brush got the worst of the the sticky residue off but it is still a little tacky...

How do I fix this, it is a rare fur that is gone from the site I purchased it from... and I only have scraps left after finishing this project (which is done aside from the body) I am simply unable to redo the body...

Flat Digitigrade help wanted + cat head critique + head is too heavy + hanging moving jaw

I have been working on my first pair of digitigrade legs (don't mind the fact there's a piece of flat foam running where my leg will go, I have a method i'm using to make it work out... However....

IMG_0028IMG_0029

*I feel they will turn out to be too flat. I could only find memories and tutorials showing legs like this without rounding the sides of the leg. Is there any references to how it should look if the sides are rounded *(maybe just the foam base)*? I could just add flat foam or shape foam circular but I wont get the muscles looking right... Or would I? Should I just carve from what I have now (I think that would still be too flat on the sides of the legs)- please help out!

Dorumon: Critique wanted! Also questions on moving jaw hanging and head being too heavy...
IMG_0030
IMG_0031IMG_0032

Dorumon fursuit questions:
*I have made the jewel on the head with melted plastic, same goes for the border around the jewel. This however made my head WAY too heavy!! I added nylon straps with a buckle and adjustments that goes around the back fo the head but its still really heavy. What can I do to either create a lighter weight jewel-see-thru-like-item that is a very large triangle, or is there a better way to make it feel lighter? Other straps?

*The moving jaw likes to hang open after I furred it. Even though the straps feel snug and comfortable around my head... It might be the weight of the bottom jaw, but how can I fix this?
IMG_0033

*GIANT tail: How do you exactly attach a 4.5 foot large tail to one's body? XD Is there links/references to straps that can hold a lot of weight around the waist?

I also modified my first fursuit head from WAY way back! I added the nose and modified the eyes....
IMG_0027
What is good to use for cat whiskers? Something not too cheap looking and stiff and not too see-thru like unpainted fish string. Is painted fish string recommended?
Critique please? I always have thought the jaw should be a different shape and maybe add some teeth.

Click here to see my awful shaving and explanations.

I was so happy with her before I started shaving, and then I ruined her and I don't even want to look at her anymore...

It's DF white and caramel, and I've heard that doesn't shave well. So blah. And I'm using crappy Wahl pet clippers, so that could definitely be a part of the problem. I may be willing to invest $100ish into good Andis clippers or something so I can fix it.

I know some parts can't be fixed, but is there any way to make it look slightly better and more even? Any advice at all would be much appreciated.

Thank you <3

Blue fur :/

Well I have been talking to Ever After fabrics on Etsy about their Aqua fur: http://www.etsy.com/listing/113377368/aqua-faux-fur

Sadly, they will not have any stock of it until May 9th and unfortunately, I can not wait that long because I have a commission that requires the fur now so that it will be finished by may. Does anyone know where I can find this fur elseware? It's eluding me at the moment and no, It's not the typical Promo Shag you can find at every other vendor.

Any help would be greatly appriciated!

If you guys remember, I was making a zebra Gargoyle costume. I didn't get off my behind nearly enough during the winter, but made some progress again now that it's spring (and I have a spacious new workplace) - the first part, the tail, is done!

There are some details of the construction on my own blog, but have a gander at how this baby moves: http://youtu.be/96yg9yRQPj8just the tail btw, I'm in my street clothes otherwise.

(Sorry for the lack of editing, lack of music and poor dancemoves. I'm quite proud of how it turned out, and wanted to share.) ;)

Thanks to foofers, without whose tutorial this wouldn't have been possible.

I didn't put the toes on a sock yet; because I wanted to know what you guys HONESTLY think. :) critiques are welcome!!!paw

sorry for my many posts!! (Don't worry, I won't be posting for a while after this!!). :( But does anyone know how to make those noises like Telephone? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fco58EYK-UI) Does Telephone just have good practice with a normal squeaker that you put in your mouth and move your lips to make sounds?? It dosen't sound like any other fursuiter I've ever heard before, so I'm not sure. Any help would be appreciated.

Looking for faux fur

Hello friends!

I am here on the hunt for my friend, Toniique on FurAffinity, who is searching for a specific color faux fur fabric. We've heard it described as "Plum" or "Wine" or "Berry", but finding this particular color is proving to be very difficult, and we would appreciate any help at all. ;w; Ideally she is looking for a 1-2" pile, no shorter, although if the color is close she's willing to accept longer pile and will just shave it as needed.

If you happen to know where we may be able to find it, or know if anyone has that particular color, please let us know! Thank you!

Help with Padded Forearms/Hands

$

I have a commission currently where one of the defining characteristics of the character is big meaty forearms and hands. Currently my plan is to make the form out of polyfill and lycra, that way it's flexible and washable. But I'm having some mental technical difficulties mostly in the areas of dexterity and where I should go about attaching the actual hands/arms to the body.

Here's a reference. Obviously there's a little play available with the actual proportions of the arms and hands, but it is a defining part of the character and so they need to be pretty noticeably brawny. I want to give him as much dexterity as possible, but of course it's not going to be a whole lot no matter what I do. XD My plan so far in more detail: The forearms will be flat pillows that go around the wearer's forearms and secure (leaning towards magnets). The hands will basically be shaped from pillows, too, but with some sort of rigid object to each finger that gives length and some amount of dexterity (we were testing this with sharpies XD).

My issue lies in where I want the hands/arms to attach to the body. I prefer to give him as much freedom as possible to get into and out of the suit on his own, but that makes things a tad difficult. I'm considering having it all attached and leaving an opening at the wrist so that he can get his hands out when he needs to, but that begs the question as to how the pillows are going to be inserted and removed.

If anyone has any good ideas or critique on what I've already come up with, I'd love to hear it.

Hey guys!

Remember my Red Panda head? I completly redid it. I was so happy with the results of the foamwork- so I went straight to the fur! I have some patterning issues though. See below cut.

Here's the front-bottom veiw.

Up close on the front.

And just for giggles, here's the WIP-

I like it alot! I was thinking of using a basting technique to try to get the general shape. What do y'all think? Also, there are some VERY rough edges around the nose. How do I hide those puppies? Thanks in advance!

Best headbands for ears?

$
0

Not so much a fursuiting question as a furry cosplay question, but does anyone have recommendations for the most durable, most comfortable plastic headbands to mount ears on? I've previously been VERY satisfied with the "Annie" headbands from Target, but I recently moved across the country and for some reason none of the Targets near me seem to carry them, and they're not available on target.com either.

I love the Annie bands because they're fabric-covered, which makes glue adhere really well; they're wide enough that I can get some depth to my ears; and they're comfy enough that I can wear them all day with no pain, even with my glasses on. If you guys know of anything similar in that price range, could you please point me to it?

(Alternatively, does anyone know where I can find Annie bands in the Bay Area? The Targets in Emeryville and Berkeley are the ones that left me SOL; do any other ones in the area sell them?)

Thanks! You guys are my heroes.

Two Fold Update: WereDingo and Bunnymund

Hello again, first time fursuiter posting again.

This is to A) Thank everyone for all their help on my first suit, B) Show off pictures of the (semi) finished product, and C) Get some advice on a second suit.

OKay first off, thanking everybody for being awesome awesome people and giving me pointer and links on my initial post about the WereDingo Sniper costume. I ended up rushing it at the very last minute, so there are somethings I know I will be going back over and fixing up, but I'm happy enough with it right now to let it be and start on another costume.

So here's the pictures I have of the WereDingo:

Back of the bodysuit. The color is a bit off and still is, I'll be needing to repaint it again later. The back fur is also slightly loose, it was just tacked in place so I need to finish that as well.

From the front. As you can see, the colors don't gradiate so well, I want to work on that more in the future.

My pawboots, which turned out ridiculously well for a first time try. I do need to invest in some gel insoles, though, they're hard on the feet after a while.

Close ups of the paws. The pads were pleather hot glued in place and made the fingers almost impossible to flex, I was extremely disappointed  I've invested in removable gloves for my next costume and will eventually get a pair for this costume as well. Liquid Latex instead...?

I may also look into making a head for this if I ever get the time and Bunny's head works out alright, I like the idea of having a full one WereDingo set.

And now for Bunnymund.
For people who don't know, this is E Aster Bunnymund, the Easter Bunny, from Rise of the Guardians:

He's Australian and awesome and I kinda fell in love with him after the third or fourth viewing of the movie. Understandably, my next goal was to see if I couldn't try making a costume of him.

These are the rough plans I've made:

I've already planned on having a chest zipper, removable gloves and a removable head/mask. My main concerns at this point in time is determining how to make digitigrade legs with big feet without making me look like a complete idiot. CanineHybrid recently put up a WIP of her character Riley, a German Shepherd dog, and the strip foam padding looks AMAZING. However, Bunny has MASSIVE feet, and I'm not entirely sure how to pull it off without me looking completely unrealistic and ridiculous.

I've been looking at fur already, since I've already dedicated myself to making this, and have fallen in love with Distinctive Fabrics. Beautiful, beautiful high quality fur, my mother has already bookmarked it for her bear making business.
These are the swatches of the fabric I've picked out for Bunny:

From left to right-
Extra Long (gray)
Monkey Shag (white)
Long (gray)

From left to right-
Minky Velvet (white)
Suede (khaki, tan, brown)

I'm debating on how long I should be making Bunny's fur, since he seems to be in his spring coat in the movie and ranges from very short soft fur on his paws to long tufts off his shoulders, elbows and ears with a big fluffy tail. I'm tempted to go long and then just shave down, but I'm afraid of maybe going too long.
The minky and suede I picked for palm and paw pads, since I want to make the whole suit very soft and huggable but also very close to what we see in the film, including his big square paw-fingers and three-toed feet.

My mother and I have been debating on how to build the ears and muzzle onto the balaclava/hood, tossing up ideas with stiff gardening wire and plastic boning, but I'd like an opinion from those with more experience with building large scale costumes. Any help at all would be brilliant.
