Question about Head Armature

Hey guys, I was wondering if any of you could go out of your way for a sec and help me.
I'm thinking of ordering the Deluxe Full head armature from MonsterMakers, and I know a lot of you use it for display, sculpture etc.
I have a lifecast I work from which is cast in stone and EXTREMELY heavy (which is good when working with clay anyway) but what I was really looking for is a measurement off of the armature (found here):
http://www.monstermakers.com/product/deluxe-full-head-sculpting-armature-life-size.html

I know it states the brow measurement (22") but what about the head circumference, aka: from the top of the head, down around the chin and back up? (Like a party hat.)

Any help is VERY much appreciated! <3

Hey guys~! I'm looking for an orange fur, and I haven't had much luck. I'm hoping to find something around 1'' long (I don't want anything really fluffy, short is best!). The color should be somewhere between these two reference images and be more orange than anything.

Acrylic and Resin eyes FAQ

I'm open to anyone adding anything they want in the comments or asking questions there. I want to just have somewhere to link people to when they're asking about eyes. I might start a list of people that offer resin eyes and acrylic eyes too but that might get too long so I'm unsure of that.

My only question is, how taught should it be? It feels a little to tight on my jaw, but I'm not sure...

plastic fursuit eyes?

i.e. the ones typically made out of plastic bowls that I see being used.

Unfortunately I have no reference of what to search off of so it's pretty aimless. Where do you guys get your plastic?

Also checked the memories and to no avail. A lot of tutorials to install them, but none as to where anyone would supply them.

Fur is frizzing! What do?

I don't know if this is a problem of my clippers, or the fur.  I'm shaving down a relatively long fur and it is turning very frizzy!
I have moderately cruddy Wahl clippers.
The acrylic fur is, however, not cruddy.
Which is to blame?!  Can I fix the frizziness?

Hello, I've noticed that my fur has gone a bit strange.. I'm not sure how to explain it, but here's a picture:

It's like gone patterned? Or uh, creased I guess?
Is there anyway of getting rid of it, cuz it's not supposed to look like this..
Thanks in advance!

Airbrushing help?

Hey all,

I've been making suits for quite a while...but never got to airbrush one. (mostly because I need to get dad to show me how to work his compressor/grant me access to it. Can't afford to buy one myself right now)

I'm not looking for advice on how to use a specific model of airbrush, I can tinker with mine to figure it out. What I'm hoping is that someone would be willing to offer advice as to what colors would be best to use, where they would be needed....what kind of layering of colors would be necessary for a realistic look. I have pictures of a realistic suit I am working on, Talulah the bear. (Btw I love how some of CR's furs shave compared to DF's. I have come to hate DF, its a jerk to try and shave and keep even and clean)

Would someone be so awesome as to even photoshop some color onto her with some notes for advice? I'm a visual learner, so a visual guide would be so much appreciated <3

more paw pad stuff

So, brainstorming. Or, well trying. Basically, I'd like to have paw pads for a pair of sock paws I'd like to make in the near future. After asking some initial questions, it would seem it would be in my best interest to keep the paw pads on the thinner side. I'd like something with a bit of grip, and have had a few different types of fabric recommended to me that I'm kind of considering.

Um. But my question is this. I'd really like the paw pads to be gold and preferably sparkly. Is there anyway to do this and make the paw pads so the color/sparkle won't rub off? I'm contemplating maybe dying some fabric, but not sure how the sparkle effect can be achieved. I found a spray that can go on fabrics that's supposed to keep things from slipping (I think it's meant for carpets and stuff, but I figure maybe it could work for fabric paw pads?)

Thoughts?

Basically, trying to figure out a method/and or material to get thin gold/sparkly paw pads. Thanks guys!

Tail Shape Critiques / Advice Needed

I'm trying to make a Lakota (wolf) tail in time for Califur, and I could really use some help/critique with the overall shape. :}

Basically, I'll go into more detail under the cut, but the summary is: I tried to match my art style to a tail, and it really isn't what I wanted, but I'm not sure how to change it - or if I even can. XD I don't want to just make a "generic canine"-shaped tail, but since I'm not happy with the stylistic one I made, I'm wondering if I should just go with generic canine. :{

I know I'm stressing a lot over the tail, but tails are weirdly super-important to me (I love them!) XD So, thank you in advance for bearing with me!

This is long with a lot of pictures, be forewarned XD

I really wanted to try making a tail that followed the visual style that I use to draw Lakota's tail. I tend to draw her tail larger and fluffier than a real wolf's, with a very defined/sharp point on the end, and with a bit of a flip/curve to the overall shape that real wolves don't have XD

Here's a quick sketch set I put together to show the positioning her tail is usually in:

I wanted to try and make a tail that matched hers, in terms of appearance/style/shape/etc. Basically, something different than the usual canine tail... it seems to me that most "canine" tails follow one of three major styles. I LIKE all of these styles and have no intrinsic problems with any of them, but none of them really felt like Lakota to me. Here's examples of what I mean:

There is also the style that is basically just the tail hanging straight down with no sewn-in shape to it at all:

I tried planning out a tail that kind of matched my art style:

It looked great on paper, and it looked great when I cut out one set of pattern pieces and laid it on the ground:

But my boyfriend suggested I make a quick "test tail" out of some crappier fur before I got too far along, and I'm glad that I did. Because the test tail... was not at all what I was hoping for. :/

oh god my posture is so bad XD DON'T LOOK

Even letting it sit lower/closer to my butt doesn't really help:

messy room ftw

It looks like a cloud or lightning bolt coming out of my butt XD And, I kind of wanted it to have some movement/wag to it as well, but the sticking-straight-out tail just looks lifeless :/

Has anyone ever gone with a "non-standard" shape for a canine tail? Have you been happy with the results? Is there anything I can do to make this kind of shape less static and less pillow-strapped-to-the-heiny in appearance? Should I give up and go with something more typical? XD

Any advice is appreciated :} Thank you!

Is there an easy way to get hot glue off of felt without damaging it? I dribbled some hot glue on the lips.

War Story:
In making the tail, I went to reach for something and it fell. I grabbed for the item and hot-glued the tail to my arm. In a panic I ripped the tail from my arm, removing a large patch of hair and about half a square inch of skin. Lesson learned; Be aware of your surroundings and don't be a derp.

Red Panda pre-fur pics?

I'm trying to redo my red panda's head and am struggling with the shape of it. I can stare at pictures of real red pandas all day but I'm having trouble seeing it line up on my fursuit head.

Does anyone have pics of a red panda head they've done that's pre-fur? Specifically I'm having trouble with fore head/muzzle and how they come together.

Thanks in advance. :)

Any experience with this fur?

Hello again everybody!
So it's spring break for me (yay!) and I have a lot of free time so I'm thinking of finally getting my first suit out of the way. I'm trying to find a good fur to use and I live near a fabric depot but I'm not sure on the quality of the fur there. From the pictures the swatches look like theyre possibly DF fur but really I'm not sure. Does anyone possibly have any experience with this stuff? If not I can always do a test report but it would be nice to know before I make the bit of a long drive to fabric depot.

Crayola Air Dry Clay?

Hi there! I have been reading posts on here for a bit but I am a first time poster. :)
okay, so I am having trouble trying to figure out if using a bit of clay on a foam fursuit head would be okay. I know it might break but I cannot seem to sculpt my bunny muzzle very well. It would be easier to use the air dry clay to sculpt it. what I am unsure of is this: if I hot glue it would it stay on? also, how long does it take for it to dry? is there any way to prevent it from breaking?

If clay is a bad idea then does anyone have any other ideas to make a bunny muzzle like this?:http://donthugcacti.tumblr.com/image/43591294066

Elastic for a moving jaw

Okay, I didn't see any posts recently on this, but where should I place the elastic on balaclava for a foam mask to have a moving jaw? I know there is one wrapping around the head but is it wrapping around vertically (under the jaw) or horizontally (across the forehead)? The last time I tried the elastic it went bad and made me irritated. Any help would be much obliged! Thanks, guys!

Preferred mask backing closures. (Velcro/ZIpper/Etc.)

We've been using Velcro cut into 4" strips that close the back of the mask. This has worked great so far but it has its downfalls. The Velcro can get messy or stick to other parts, making Velcro high maintenance.. Cutting the Velcro into 4" strips really helped with this but we're still looking for alternatives. We've thought of using zippers but we are afraid it will be a mess of zipped hair and fur if someones not careful.

Anyone mind sharing some pros and cons for techniques they have used or experimented with? We would really appreciate it!

To shave or not?

Hello again, I'm a bit stuck as to whether to shave the face or not.. At the same time that I think it looks okay, I think it might look better shaved? Idk I guess I need a second opinion or more^__^

Please note that the fur is not properly in place yet, as well as the eyes, so as it looks now won't be the final outcome, and I apologise for the pins, it looks like she has piercings heh xD
It's supposed to be Fluttershy from My Little Pony btw in case anyone wasn't sure^__^
Thanks in advance!

EDIT: Also when should I place the eyes in? Before or after gluing the edges of the fur down?

Joann's questions

Sorry to post again so fast again but i was wondering about joann's "designer craft fur"http://www.joann.com/darice-designer-fur-deluxe12-x15-white/xprd75874/
i have bought some and it IS MUCH better quality than their by the yard fur. I was just wondering if anyone has used this before on a fursuit. Also, can you shave it down and dye it well? Their BTY fur however, does shaving it down make it any better?
Their foam; is the quality good? (what type of foam do you reccommend?)

Fur color question

I'm currently working ona fursuit partial of one of my characters, but I can't seem to find a color close enough to the beige in the markings. I've ordered multiple swatches. DF Camel is a little too dark for what I'm looking for. Here's the character ref:
