1st timer, have no idea what i'm doing

Hi folks; I hope ya'll wont mind me coming here for help since what i'm doing isn't technically a fursuit....I intend on cosplaying Freddy from Five Nights at Freddy's and I figure fursuit methods are the best way to go in constructing the costume. I intend on using a balaclava base w/moving jaw, and fleecing the costume since Freddy isn't really furry or even all that fuzzy, but I have a few questions:

  • What method should I use to construct the eyes? I really want a follow-me eye but i'm not sure how to do it in a way that will look right.

  • How in the world would one go about doing the body?

  • Where's the best place to find fleece online with a decent color selection and low price?

Here's a picture or two of ol freddy if anyone's unfamiliar with him:

As you can see, Freddy's eyes are actually pushed back quite a bit from the openings in the head (it's because the eyes are actually attached to a metal skeleton under the head, and not attached to the head itself. I'm not sure how to get that look while having it so you cant see my eyes under and/or having it so I can see.

Also his body is.......well

Freddy pls

Fursuit hoodie?

I was thinking about making a custom fit hoodie for a character that I'm making a fursuit out of (ref here: http://fav.me/d8dugol)
And I was wondering if there have been fursuits that have also had some sort of custom hoodie I can get inspiration from, or maybe some tutorials. Thanks

Fursuit with "flesh-like" skin

So, I really do apologize if this is somewhere in the tags/memories. I just have no clue how to search for this specific thing.

One of my 'sonas is a monster, very creepy and morbid appearance. He has no fur whatsoever which is where I'm having problems with "furring". I guess the best way to describe his skin is dinosaur-like, think fleshy but not scaly. The flesh is also pulled tight giving him the appearance of being zombie-ish and unsettling. Since I can't simply hide seams under fur, how would I go about hiding seams as well as making his features gaunt? I already plan to use a resin head base but I don't know where to take it from there.

Looking for someone who can make casted items

I'm working on a fursuit of my character, the rough description of which would be a "antro batgryph". I am making as much of it as I can myself, but the handpaws and forearms are a bit of challenge.

My character is furred all over except just below the bend of the elbow where the fur gives way to a birdlike forearm and hand. Here is a picture of what the fursuit will roughly look like. Sample picture SFW, link leads to FA though so be careful.

So basically what I'm looking for is a company or individual who can cast me an arm and handpaw out of latex or some other costume friendly material so I can get the most realistic paw possible.

I know I have seen a few tables at conventions where people were offering up custom casted parts and other pre-made parts. Sadly I never took down any info and its been a while since I've been to a major convention. Anyone have any pointers to people/companies who are reliable and more importantly, could do this by may or june? I am hoping to have my fursuit up to at least being a partial by Anthrocon and this is a critical component. I know it may cost, but money isn't a big object here.

Eye spacing help; how do you guys get the eyes so far apart?

So I've been tossing around some ideas for another head, but I've been running into a problem; most animals have eyes that are spaced much farther apart than in humans. The solutions I've seen are 1) to make the eyes toonishly close to one another, b) to put vision ports in the tear duct instead of through the eye, or c) put vision ports somewhere else (I used the mouth on my last head, for example). I'm having trouble getting my heads to look proportional while acocunting for our close-set eyes and huge, flat foreheads. To illustrate, I have some examples of an Umbreon below:

I'm using digital 3D modeling for now to explore the shape I want before I waste real materials :P
I would like to go with toony (or at least flat) eyes for now, but I'm not sure how to do that without making them too close. Could someone help me (perhaps with some redlines) on getting proportions right? I'm especially interested in the look those Japanese fursuits somehow acheieve, but I have no clue how they do it. Halp!

Sewing Vinyl Claws?

$

I've looked through the memories and I've seen people discuss plastic, clay, and resin claws, but not really soft ones, particularly with something like marine vinyl, which is what I'm attempting to work with.

I wanted to add some fabric claws to my character's hand and feetpaws to give him some flair in time for FWA this year while still keeping his paws machine-washable, but I'm running into a roadblock. My pattern has simply been sandwiching two pieces of claw-shaped fabric together (probably my first mistake). First, I've tried sewing them from the inside out, but it was too small to flip to the outside. Then I tried folding over the edges and ladder stitching them together instead, but I always end up with pulled edges and an ugly clump of fabric at the tip of the claw. Also, it's pulling to the side anyway:

That's the closest I got to what I wanted, but ick. Such an ugly barnacle. So my latest attempt had me mixing the two methods by basket-stitching the tip of the claw while ladder-stitching the rest of it closed, but I quickly realized the ladder stitch on the tip itself still doesn't allow the claw to come to a nice point, and when I pull the fabric together to sew, the stitches are then blatantly visible. Basically, I'm looking for something like, well, any other person who's able to do nice fabric claws, like MoreFurLess, wild-life, or FurItUp just to name a few.

So where exactly am I going wrong? The pattern, the size of my fabric, the sewing, or even the fabric itself? Should I, somehow, actually be machine sewing these things? How in the world do you get nice shiny fabric claws?

Just thought to post this for those sewing with fleece or minky

Posted this for someone else, then realized others might benefit from it.

https://nittensandpatches.wordpress.com/tutorials/trade-secrets/make-your-seams-disappear-almost/

I know there was a post not too long ago about someone using polar fleece and carefully brushing the seams and then shaving to get rid of the seams, but I can't seem to find it. Still, same-ish idea here. I feel that being more careful and taking much more time (and using a fur brush) would yield even better results than shown in the above link.

Airbrushing Video

An 'update' to my old 2011 ear airbrushing video heh.

In this one I airbrush three pairs of ears from start to (more or less) finished (I lost my camera battery in the last few minutes).

It's not a direct tutorial but I think it shows some basic "How I do things" which may help or enlighten you of the airbrushing process ^_^

First fursuit! [WIP]

Hope I'm allowed to make a WIP thread, haha.

This is my first fursuit construction. I am making "Commander Shepherd" for Denver Comic Con! She is a black and tan/silver GSD with blue eyes. [or grey, haven't decided yet] This will be a realistic build. I will be giving her a scar too and her ears will be tattered a little.
This is a partial! Head, tail, hand paws, and arm sleeves [for when I'm not wearing the hoodie]

Base: CanineHybrid K9 resin base
Jawset: basic taxidermy jawset
Eyes: DVC blank 3mm 3D
Features:
- Moving jaw
- Articulated tail [just so it wags instead of hanging down as dead weight]
- Whiskers!

I would like critique! But please be kind about it, this is my first build. Advice would be amazing and links to good realistic tutorials would be very appreciated.

Eyes I painted last night

Face profile:
I wanted the top teeth to be seen a little bit, so the jaw is open just a smidge and jowls are brought down. Lips will be made from apoxie sculpt. Still waiting on a tongue.
Eyes are just a placeholder. I'm still working on painting her blue ones correctly.

I just seem to have a problem with finding a decent tutorial on realistic ears.

Clipper problems D:

So it finally happened - my clippers suddenly refuse to cut fur properly, and I'm trying to determine why.

Knowing that this problem usually lies with misaligned blades, I've removed and reinstalled the blade assembly about six times now, to no avail! I've consulted the offical instruction manual, unscrewed the base plate, realigned the teeth, reapplied the oil, cleaned fur out of the case, the whole thing. Do any of you have any tips on what to do in this situation? Maybe there's something I'm missing here.

For reference, it's a $45 set of Wahl clippers, bought new, used to shave down four fursuit heads. It's not a cordless model, and has only the one blade it came with. It was behaving fine the last time I used it, and now it sort of stalls and feels "stuck" when I try to run it through fur.

Pattern darting clarification

Since I'm at the point of cutting out my pattern made from my DTD, I had a quick question about darts that I hope someone can clarify.

I understand that I should cut slits into portions of my pattern so that it will lay flat before transfering it to the fur, but the part I'm confused on is what do I do with the negative (triangle) space that is created when the pattern is then laid flat? Do I trace the triangle portion into my fur, and then sew the dart lines together?

Just concerned that it won't end up creating lumpy spots where the fur then has a folder underneath.

Fur Contents? (Polyester vs Acrylic/ Synthetics)

$

I rephrased the question as many ways as I could before asking this and couldn't find anything- but;

Is there a preference as to what kind of contents faux fur has? I was searching for some today and was looking at the contents each pile had. I saw some made of polyester, acrylic, and synthetic (at least those were the most prominent). I was just wondering if this contributed to the quality of the fur, and if so, what's the difference between them all? I was mainly looking for shag fur. Something long and smooth, but not too shiny so it didn't look oily.

Thanks!

Fleece vs Faux Leather vs Upholstery Fabric

I've still been "ho-humming" about my suit. I've order most of the stuff except for the fabric among other things. I went to my local craft store and was examining the fabric to find the right one for my suit that mentioned a few days/weeks ago. I was caught up though about which of the three material I put in my title to buy.

Fleece
Pros: I know what to expect with the material, it's inexpensive, there are tons of colors/patterns to choose from, the material is sturdy enough, and it's easy enough to work with.
Cons: The material will eventually pill/pil/pile, it might cause the appearance of fuzz/fluff/fur when my suit is suppose to appear flesh-like, it may get really hot when worn, might be harder to clean/keep sanitary.

Faux Leather/Pleather
Pros: This has the EXACT look I'm going for when I say "flesh like", material is study, has colors almost very close to what I want without dying/hunting the internet, and easy to clean.
Cons: Very hot when worn, tears/holes will not easily be repaired in a way that looks nice, harder to work with as a material, more expensive that fleece/upholstery fabric.

Upholstery Fabric
Pros: Has the best of fleece (easy to work with, cheaper, less heat) and faux leather (color/pattern I want, fleshier appearance, easy to clean).
Cons: Stiff material that is almost unforgiving, might be forced to compromise on a pattern/texture to get the color I want, and I've never really worked with it much.

With all the said, what say you guys (and gals)?

Fur finding help?

$

Hey there guys! I am in need of some help finding some furs that match these swatches.

It's for my otter sona. I'm looking for medium to short length pile furs, I'd say no shorter than 10mm please.

I don't necessarily mind shaving down fur, but I'd prefer not to. I also do not want to dye or airbrush anything.

I can provide the hex codes for the swatches as the colours look completely different to each other on my laptop and my tablet haha.

I am based in the UK and ideally would like to purchase my furs here as customs cost a fortune from the US :/

The fur colours I'm really struggling with are his belly and the darkest brown.

Here is his ref sheet with the swatches on it :) thanks in advance guys!
(please note that the 5th colour from the left - 3rd darkest brown - is not required, that was just for blendings sake)

Arm Sleeves?

I have no idea what I'm doing but I'm trying to make some arm sleeves. They look really simple (arm tubes, anyone?) but I really, really feel like there must be something I'm missing!

Any help, please?

Rebound 25 past shelf life?

$

I wasn't sure if it would be okay to revive an older question from 2011, sorry if this breaks some rule for asking an already asked question!

So I'm a super newb to silicone, so new that I had no idea the smooth on brand had a shelf life of six months when I purchased it to have it on hand for when I would finally need it.

I found the older question about Rebound 25 where some artists said they had purchased large quantities of it and didn't experience it going bad on them, another said that it just takes longer to cure after its shelf life. I'm curious if anyone has had an unopened bottle sit around for over six months and had success with using it?

I purchased this trial kit back in August 2014, it's never been opened and we keep our place around 75 constanly. How can I tell if it's okay to use without ruining my sculpt I've spent a stupid amount of time on?

Thanks in advance for any help you guys can offer.

Quick question about antron fleece

I need to use some fleece to do part of a human-like face, and I was wondering if the cream flesh color is close to a Caucasian skin tone or more of an off white. Has anybody used this stuff and have an opinion? Here's the link:
http://www.outoftheboxpuppets.com/index.php?_a=product&product_id=207

Also, I know a Beetlejuice costume was posted not too long ago (a really awesome one). Would you estimate the face to take about a yard of fleece? The post is here:
