Questions I can't find answers to.

Hello! ^-^

I've been spending the past couple of months looking at tutorials for my first fursuit, yet I still have some questions.

I plan on making a baclava head, however my head is so big that most hats don't even fit me. I don't understand how people can use this method on a manakin head while having it accurately fit to their head. Wouldn't the fur pattern be shapped incorrectly? I understand that some people measure the demensions of their head and add foam to the manakin, but that doesn't seem accurate. I know I could make a duck tape head cast, but that sounds like a pain in the butt, plus I need to find a willing helper. What is the best way to apprach this?

I plan on making a kawaii style fursuit, and I want it to have acrylic eyes. I think I can do it, but do you think I'm taking on too difficult of a task for my first suit?

And I'm obsessed with this color of fur.

Did the maker dye it, or buy it that way?

Any advice is greatly appreciated! <3

'breathing' smoke?

I'm not even close to testing this idea out, but here it goes. I'm about to have a head made of a character who breathes smoke. Whether he's talking or just breathing normally, smoke pours out of him. Is there any practical way to have this happen in suit (smoking cigs isn't a choice!)? I see there are mini fog makers you can even make on your on, like so. Would it be possible to stick this somewhere in the head, like in the muzzle and point the hose out the mouth?

Or is this simply impossible?

Problem with a moving jaw >:C

I'm working on a khajiit cosplay and am rather proud of how he is turning out so far, but have hit a snag. I've tried tightening the elastic, the interior is padded to try and help it fit more snug, and the hood has even been taken in to fight a little tighter. My only thought on how to fix is to simply tighten it further on the hood. You see, the jaw is quite sensitive if I manually move it with my hand. So I don't think it's a matter of the fabric being too taught along the mouth's edges. But when I wear it, and try to operate the moving jaw...it simply opens maybe half an inch and pulls the mask down.

I've never had a moving jaw cause this much trouble for me, all my previous methods mentioned have been able to fix it...until now...
Thoughts? And yep, he's made using some NFT. Also, I'm sorry but IDK why LJ keeps wanting to turn the images sideways. I've tried fixing it several times, so I'm just going to have to leave it for now, it won't change. Please note that he will be airbrushed to have some wonderful markings once I can get this jaw mobility issue fixed.

Maintaining your Fursuit Parts

I've been asked how I maintain my fursuits and heads, I've been crossposting this a few places at folk's request! This is how I maintain my fursuit parts. This is a common thing, but still totally helps to see it visually! When I talk about wiping them off, here's how I do it!

When stored fursuits get dusty, when worn they get a little dirty, so maintaining them by wiping them off really helps them look like new!

Faux Fur Color Help!

I working on designing a baby deer fursuit but having trouble finding fur colors I want. Other than the Baby Blue, Lavender and Baby Pink on here: http://www.syfabrics.com/Browse.aspx/Long-Pile-Shaggy-Fur/186

Are there suppliers who sell pastel colors? I'm looking for a baby chick easter yellow, buttercup, soft butterscotch, and a honeysuckle yellow. Basically anything on the soft warm yellow spectrum.

Has anyone used the Gold Shag from SY Fabrics on a suit? I can't visualize what the color would look like when put on a body. Thanks for all the help! I haven't made a fursuit in probably over half a decade. Things have really changed since then! Go fandom!

Lower jaw hanging open

This guy had a basically unintentional moving jaw (which I'd like to keep), but he's not supposed to have anything like a smile. (Grumpy character.) I can't really seem to think to a way to keep his bottom jaw up. I'm pretty sure its just gravity, not the sculpey teeth. They're pretty tiny and there's room in the roof of the mouth for them.

Feedback on foam bases

So my boyfriend and I are making our first suits, and we think we're just about ready to start working on the tape pattern for the fur, but wanted to get feedback on our head shapes first!

Mine is a possum, and his is a wolf. I should note that the concept for his character is that he's kind of a 90s neckbeard and will be worn with something like wide leg Tripp pants and a shirt with flames. His nose will probably be made of Sculpey; the foam is just a placeholder. As for mine, I am okay with the pupil-less eyes coming off as creepy. And the templates for the eyes look a little uneven in the picture because that's the best I could pin them in. I think that's about it. I appreciate your thoughts! I feel like this has gone over surprisingly well thus far, so I'm paranoid about moving to the next step. :P

Do you line your feetpaws/handpaws? And if so what with?

$

Hey there, I am nearly finished with my new shoe-based indoor feetpaws. Just need to sew the ankle to the rest of the foot.

I'm wondering about lining though. Does anyone here line their paws? Or do you just hem the ankles?

The fur colour is black and I have some black fleece I could use to hem the ankles, but I'm not sure if I have enough to line the entire ankle.

Do I need to fully line them? Keep in mind these are for me, but I still want them to look professional.

I have two black hidden zips to sew into the ankle fur to have at the back so I can get the paws on nice and easily as well.

Thanks in advance for any advice :)

Finishing a tail (and meat bases)

So my main question..how do I finish a tail properly? In the one tail I made, I stuffed the tail entirely and then sewed the base part on by hand. I just cut out a really big circle and trimmed it as I went.

The results weren't great..

how are you actually supposed to finish a tail base?

and does anyone have a tutorial for meat base tails?

Fabric.com and Distinctive Fabric *New* furs!

So I've been looking for someone too tell me what these new furs are like. I haven't been able to find anything about them or with a comparison anywhere so I went ahead and bought some to share with all of you~

Let's start off with the Taupe Alpaca. To me, this fur looks far too similar to Monkey/gorilla shag to not be called such. As you can see, it even has a sparse backing. It has a thin feel to it but it appears to be very thick (Like MKSH). This one is from Fabric.com and comes in some pretty awesome colors like a nice Steely blue and a Mossy looking green as well as Black and White! It looks like these may be here to stay too since they're supplied by Shannon fabrics~ ($29.98)

Next up I have a few different furs from Distictive Fabrics (Omit the long taupe in the top left)

Starting in the top left, we have a peachy looking fur with black tips. This is called "Metropolitan frosted black Pumpkin" The name is actually kinda deceiving because I was expecting a more orange colored fur. It's actually more pink in color so be aware! This might as well be called"Metropolitan frosted black Peach". If you want a more orange color, go to "I'm stuffed fur" for their tipped yam (It's a muted orange that's right on the verge of being rust colored).

Right next to the peach, we have
"Metropolitan frosted black burgundy". It's exactly the same as the other and it's pretty much exactly what I would expect from a burgundy fur. These furs are about an inch long with nice dense piles that's easy to shave to for me, very easy to manage on a suit~ It's a lot straighter than your typical shag and sleeker but not quite as soft. ($29.00 for both)

Next, here's a different line of fur. It's the "Marmot" fur (This is the black swatch and the pink swatch)! I was really excited for this one but now I'm a little more on the cautious side. It's noticeably thin and I would only recommend fursuit making vets use this if you're comfortable with shaving. For me, I use a long enough trimmer head that I *Could* make this work but on the lighter colors, I wouldn't chance it. It would work wonders for a tail or body where no trimming would be needed though! BEWARE, the pink above is listed as "Coral" but it looks more like a papaya color to me (I think coral has a smidge more orange to it) They are both sleek and soft and have piles of about 9/10ths of an inch. it just BARELY makes that 1" mark. ($19)

Then there's a more well known Purple sparkle fur (bottom right). This is pretty common and has been around for a while (I didn't intend to post a review on this) but if you'd like to know more about it, I'll let you know in a comment~

Now let's switch gears back to Fabric.com! This is a gray fur I wasn't at all optimistic about. I actually bought it because a commissioner of mine wanted to know if it would work. Unfortunately, you can't buy a swatch of this stuff. You have to buy at least half a yard in order to get it to see if it's even worth it. Well, I think it's quite worth it. The particular one I bought was the "Coarse Hair Faux Fur Dark Grey" . They have a silver but I didn't buy both (until now). Like the name suggests, it's pretty coarse in texture and has a pile length of about 1"-1.2". Even when it's ruffled up, it still looks pretty appealing. It's a warm grey which I've never seen available before so this was pretty awesome to find on a site like Fabric.com (The lighter grey is your typical LS gray for comparison). Be sure to check them out periodically. They tend to have the same stock year around but occasionally, you can find hidden gems like this that makes any lengthy searching work while. ($19.98) (P.S. These furs will not last long. there is a very limited supply. Since this is not marked as being sold from Shannon fabrics, there is a high possibility that once it's gone, it's gone!)
They have an LS burgundy for sale at the moment which isn't normally in stock. It's different from maroon in that it has a bit more of purple-ish tone to it while still being a nice, dark and rich red color.

If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask! I hope this helps anyone who's been curious about these new furs that have become readily available~

Is ther a pattern out there to follow? I tried to make one out of this really soft mink fur..and it was coming along well till I got to the underside of it (used felt for bottom "scales" not over lapping ones, more like this:http://www.furaffinity.net/view/3906392/). I cannot for the life of me get the 'belly scales right'

next step for beginners - my first project

OK I now have a list of items I need as basic beginners tools. Right now I need to then know is how do I learn now to build a bodysuit? I can sew a little and done some hand sewing. People have said I need to practice first on scrap fabrics before I begin my first suit. So does anyone have any reccomendations on what I should do? Are their sewing designs I should use? Any kind of roadmap for my first practice would be helpful.

Patterning mouth (and critique!)

Hi guys! I've duct-taped my mouth area and I'm not sure how I should go about cutting the pattern without having super obvious seams. I'm planning on using white fleece as the rest of the fur is already glued down from before (I'm just redoing the mouth area).

I'd also like a critique on my progress if you guys have anything! :)
