Collapsing Foam

Can anyone please help me with my expanding foam issue? It keeps collapsing after I pour it in the mold. I thought it was the temperature/weather, but it's happened when it's hot, cool and freezing outside. I'm not mixing it or pouring it any differently than I used to. I'm not really sure what I'm doing wrong. :s I'm using the Monster Makers expanding foam.

New to LJ, but I need help!

Hi there! I'm new to LiveJournal, and this is my first post! I already need help with something...
So I will soon be making a sergal tail for my Yurei fursuit, but I'm not sure about some things. It will be around 3 feet long (maybe a little more, and it will drag a little), and it will be attached to the suit with a belt so it can also be used in a partial. Here's my fursona for reference if need be http://www.furaffinity.net/view/14979947/

It wont be a stiff tail with armature or anything, so it will be floppy. I was wondering what kind of stuffing would work best? I need something that is resistant to mildew and getting gross in general in case it accidentally gets wet (it rains quite often where I am)

Since it will have a thick base, should there be something stiff to be at the base to keep it flat there? Or will it hold itself flat at the base? And what makes the best belt loops? I've heard elastic and other things but I wanted to see what works best for larger, heavier tails.

Since I'm planning on giving it a little curve towards the base of the tail (so it doesn't simply bend and change the placing of the stuffing) would it be a good idea to get a pattern for my tail from making a foam blank of it first, then using duct tape to make a pattern (like a DTD)?

Dress form?

Another important question.

For Christmas, I asked for a mannequin so I can start practing on full fursuits (I've only made 2 for other people in the past). My mother, who used to work in fashion, corrected me and said I should ask for a dress form instead. It's better for measuring, mocking up pieces, etc.

How many of you use a dress form? Is it the right way to go?

Sockpaw commission

Hey furs! I'm considering doing a sockpaw commission but I was wondering -- for you guys that make them for other people what information sizing/measurements do you require? Is it possible just to get the right size sock or do you need a dtd of the foot? The sock paws I'll be making are knee high not sure if that requires anything different as far as comissioner info. Thanks!

Front zippers

I know there is a Memory about how to hide zippers and what size to use, but it didn't actually specify ideal zipper sizes (or any zipper sizes).

I've decided to go with a front zipper because the Yurei's belly is a solid white with no markings, as opposed to the back which has numerous stripes so it would be difficult and time consuming to secure all the seams and such. Plus in an emergency I can unzip myself if I have to. So, what would be some good front zipper lengths? I'm around 5' 9 1/2" tall if that helps at all.

Moving a zipper on a bodysuit

Sorry for posting here again so soon.

A year ago I commissioned someone for a bodysuit and the zipper was sewn to the back. Sadly, I haven't worn the fursuit body at all for that reason- It's embarrassing to try to zip it up and ask for help.

If I took the zipper out of the back and moved it to the front, would I need extra fabric or would the conversion result in no change? The suit isn't completely skin-tight on me and needs a little fixing anyways, but always good to ask.

Also, how would I get rid of awkward crotch bunching? (Shown here: http://www.ezimba.com/work/141221C/ezimba16923698579000.jpg)

Thanks!

Looking to get fursuit tailored bigger - local or fursuit maker?

I recently got a fursuit that I would like tailored to fit someone bigger yet I'm not sure the tailors in my area would know where to begin. I'm wondering if it would be better to send it out to a fursuit maker or tailor who is experienced in body padding. I got a few recommendation on where to start looking but I fear the only time they might be open is later into next year. Would it be easier to send out the suit or find a local tailor that would be able to work with me on making the suit bigger?

New to LJ, Bunch of Ideas/Questions- Feedback?

Hello, I've been browsing the fursuit livejournal for about a year now while making two fursuits, but I've only now made an account. I have a bunch of ideas for future suits and I'd like to know how to carry them out/if they're feasible.

Plushie/stuffed footpaws-

I have these big stompy/animalistic feet and I love the way they look, but the foamwork in them is falling apart since they were my first attempt at footpaws and were not well-constructed. Would it be possible to make a DTD of my feet to make a lining, sew that to the fur cover and stuf it to make plush feet?  Has anyone attempted this before?  Is it durable enough?  Is there any way to attach parade/outdoor soles this way?

Plastisol pawpads/noses-

Silicone's really expensive and latex is such a common allergy that I was recently thinking about good alternatives to them for soft fursuit parts, when my mom brought up the Plasti-Goop used in Creepy Crawlers toy sets.  I found that there's something similiar  called Plastisol that's used to make soft fishing baits, and it's cheaper than silicone and not as allergenic as latex.  Has anyone used it and would it be durable enough for pawpads or noses?  Also, can plaster molds tolerate the temperatures used to cure the stuff? (about 350 degrees Farenheit/177 Celsius)

Free flipping/rotating ears-

I have a very strange character that I'm planning to make that has ears that freely swing/flip/rotate around their connection to the head as it moves. It's not something that should require electronics, all mechanical.

I have a feeling there's some simple way of doing this.  If so, is there any way to do this with a foam-based head? (I'd rather not deal with resin for various reasons)

Seal/ Beaver fur-

How hard is this to use compared to MM fox?  Could a beginner make an okay 3/4 suit with it?

Fursuitsupplies Bunny/Flokati Shag-

How well do these furs airbrush?  Is Bunny Shag sold anywhere else in anyother colors?

Dorumon Version 2 + Commission Prices: Wishing for advice on my prices!

My most recent work I haven't posted to LJ yet! :) Critique is helpful as always!

*Things I notice that I want to improve on:
-Head size looks slightly large
-Legs: I want to get a smaller more curvy shape next time for digitigrade, i'll work towards that. Currently it's slightly aiming at Kigurumi Japanese style.
WANT ADVICE THE MOST FOR: -The tail: Eventhough I attached the nylon webbing to the middle section of my tails where they attach to the belt tightly, they always end up slopping to the side of the body. I even cut out fur and made the tail shorter near the butt area to get rid of loose fabric and re-did the webbing attachment, and I also added a second strip of webbing yet they still slop to the side. Why is it doing this... How to prevent this next time??

Commission Prices Question:
Link to my commissions: http://fav.me/d73enrq
Can I have a few observations about my Commission Prices with where i'm currently at in terms of what I offer? Am I pricing things too high or too low? I am known for doing everything so carefully, it usually takes me about 100 hours for a digitigrade fullsuit and about 65 hours for a plantigrade fursuit. I had people tell me that my prices are too low, but I haven't gotten that many customers with money up front these last few months like I planned to have.

Fursuits i'm planning on finishing for examples sake include: Shiny Charizard, Bolt the Dog and possibly a Jolteon.
*I'm also going to work on making a ton of different eye styles just for example purposes, resin claws/teeth, and hopefully swatches of every glitter vinyl I can find. I hope it wont clog up my page, I might make them small but clickable.

Clean Seams and practice!

I know this sounds kind of silly, but do other fursuit makers have somewhat sloppy-looking insides on their costumes in terms of sewing two pieces of fur together? Or do I just need to practice more?

I guess I'm just feeling a bit self conscious because this was my first time machine sewing a few things, such as a tail and some handpaws together w/o any handsewing. Handsewing has always worked wonders with me, however in order to prolong the chance that I might get carpel tunnel, I've been slowly moving my work over to machine sewing markings and things in, and handsewing only when working with intricate and detailed markings. I also figure it might save me some time in the long run when working with commissioners and having a set of deadlines to meet.

It's not that the outsides of my sewing look sloppy, by any means! Faux fur is wonderful for hiding things. It's just, the insides look a little wonky. xD It's not horrible, but it's not like I'm sewing in a continual line around the whole fursuit part. Some bits I had to change a little or go over again.

I figure, if I keep practicing, the inner sewing will start to look a little more clean. This was my first time working with sewing markings in by machine. I'm just curious to see if I'm not the only one, or maybe I'm still a machine sewing n00b. xD

Making the "hood" of my head

So I have (for the most part) finished with my Yurei other than furring, but I'm not sure how to sew the hood (neck, back of the head) seeing as how I don't have a cast head or anything to have a basic form to make a pattern for the hood. Any suggestions?
This is my progress so far (except it is marked with sharpie) https://www.furaffinity.net/view/15309392/

Moving jaw on an odd shaped face?

$

I wound up not making the suit that I had planned due to not being able to get the fur I needed (The rabbit swatch I recieved was scratchy and has some kind of sticky gunk on it and fabric.com was sold out of all the shortpile colors I needed). So I ordered different fur and started on a different character I had been planning to put off for a while.

I already made most of his headbase, though it still needs a little modification to smooth things out and to add the 'spikes' that will support where his mane sticks up. However, I realized I would like to have his jaw move since I have a noise maker I plan to use for his voice and it looks a little odd when his face is just perfectly still when I use it.
The nose, teeth, and eyes are all paper placeholders. His ears don't need a foam base just yet since I plan to have a posable wire frame for them.
Has anyone made a moving jaw for a character like this without having to break the chin area off from the rest of the face?

Hey guys! I posted my first fursuit here a few months ago and I'm already sick of her, so I skinned her, edited her jaw, and refurred everything. I'm wondering what you guys think and if there's anything weird with her. I've still got to glue down her nose, line her mouth, and make eyes that aren't cardstock, so she's not officially done, but close enough

I'm super paranoid that she's lopsided and that the nose is way too small :V Any advice/critique would be awesome. I've got a thick skin, so COME AT ME (」゜ロ゜)」

Thanks a bunch!

Experience shipping a sewing machine?

I need to ask for your guys help here! I need a flight out of my location to another one by airplane.

Ever ship a sewing machine? What works for not tripping the machine?

I do have massive experience with mailing things, I would assume that the best way would be...
*A huge box filled with peanuts and the  machine wrapped multiple times in bags, one bag on the outside being filled with peanuts so the peanuts in the box also help sponge it in. And marked as fragile, USPS being safer with mailing.

I was thinking about bringing it as a personal item on board on the plane, however, they require you to put all personal items under the seat in front of you D:

Am I still risking my machine possibly being tripped during shipment this way?
*Is repairing a machine that was tripped about $100 roughly or more?
*Would it be fine to try and use the machine after it arrives to see if it works or will needles fly and loud noises happen? LOL XD i'm so scared of that!

Would it just be best to purchase a new machine in that other area?

Protect your lungs!

I don't know if this has ever been brought up in the community, but I think it should be addressed. I recently met up with a former stuffed animal maker who worked with a lot of faux fur for many years. She informed me that later on, she found she could no longer work in the faux fur environment, because she got horrible respiratory problems! I had never heard of such an issue, but I do have many instances while cutting furs where I do get sneeze-y, or get it trapped in my mouth. No fun!

It seems that working with faux fur for long periods of time, especially with the luxury shag type, could possibly damage your upper respiratory. Kind of like black lung, except with plastic fur fibers (though not as harsh as black lung, but it could cause chest issues later in life).

I'm pretty certain that if you're only going to make one or two fursuits in your lifetime, it won't harm you. But if you're thinking of building fursuits for a living, or ARE building fursuits for a living, you HAVE to take in effect that you could possibly be breathing in fibers into your lungs, and it could cause you to have a somewhat chronic cough later in life!

I've known a few fursuit builders that use a respirator to help prevent fur from getting trapped in their lungs when cutting, but I still have the feeling that a lot of craftsmen don't realize this and are at a risk of not being able to do their job as years go on.

I just wanted to post this to alert community members that there is a certain risk if you consider building these costumes! Please make sure you take care of your lungs and protect your body while building these wonderful costumes, or you could risk never being able to do this type of work again!

Microbeads?

Every time I bring up any sort of stuffed padding in fursuits, my mom suggests trying microbeads. Has anyone tried using those in a suit, and are they any better than polyfil?

Majora's [Fursuit] Mask!

Hey guys! I haven't posted in a long while, BUT I recently finished this guy and I wanted to share. I'm super proud of him, and while he has his imperfections I can't be happier with him!

majora01

I was tossing around the idea of a Majora's Mask-inspired fursuit for a while, but once I heard the remake announcement, I couldn't contain my excitement and I got started on Majora! (Original name, I know! haha) To start, let me show some images of my reference.
IMG_0930IMG_0797IMG_0796

I wanted to create markings that are highly recognizable as Majora's Mask, but also allowing some inspiration and minor changes to the design, to accommodate the change to a different, 3D shape; in this case, a jackal fursuit head. There are some minor differences, like the white outline of the green on the cheeks, and black stripes in the purple on the forehead, and I took some liberty with the design on the back of the head, since the original Majora's Mask is a front-only mask. I had to make some REALLY TINY pieces in order to make this mask a success; I don't have access to my airbrush, or any space to set it up.

wip01

Every separate color you see is its own fur yardage, and I spent probably a week solid just hand-sewing every seam. Here's a size reference for some of the pieces.

The duct tape pieces in the photo were taken from the muzzle, and to compare a mechanical pencil and some pins. The little dots were the black pieces on the muzzle, and they took about a half hour each to hand sew. @.@ I used the blue tailor's chalk (upper right corner) to trace around the pieces, and cut them out with the fingernail scissors also seen in the image. I used the chalk area as seam allowance, since the chalk is approximately 2/8" thick.

(Fingernail scissors are really great for intricate cutting - you can 'insert' the tip under the backing, and cut your piece out without touching the pile. It's how I did Rigby's spots as well.)

I incorporated 3D eyes, with the idea of an added creepy effect. His eyes are painted with fluorescent paints which make them POP in low light. I also used the front of his ears as the top 'horns/spikes' with a black interior to bring more attention to them. The spikes on his cheeks are just cone-shaped pieces of fur, stuffed with polyfil, and I sewed in an interfacing as a seal so the stuffing didn't migrate. My clippers dulled about 30% of the way into shaving him, and I had to resort to scissor work. A good bit of him is choppy and uneven... however once I'm able to get my clippers sharpened I'll be able to go over him and smooth him out.

He's lined with a cotton-type lining, similar to what Matrices uses. His mouth has a fleece lining with a fleece tongue, and his teeth are excess DVC claws I had, cut, painted, and re-purposed for teeth. The nose is a resin cast of my own sculpt that I had painted. The furs I used on him are all Luxury Shag, with the exception of the ear fluff and his neck, both are Monkey Shag.

Here's a back-view of the forehead and back.
wip02IMG_1126

Making him was an exceptionally fun and interesting experience, and opens up new types of projects for my future - I want to try and create other images with intricate sewing work, and it gives me a better idea of what character designs are and aren't possible. I hope to have a fullsuit of this guy sometime in 2015 (maybe Anthrocon?), when I'll come back and share the design for his body. :D

fursuit dog tags

I Just wanted to share a pet tag place that makes large pet tags suitable for fursuits. Its about two inches round pretty light and not a lot of jingle.
Here are some pictures that compare it with a quick tag (one of those kiosks that make tags at pet shops).

Ignore the blurriness I was trying to hold it and take the picture at the same time.

The prices are reasonable and the shipping was pretty quick. I paid five dollars for two tags and they came in four days.
http://www.pettags4less.com/.
They are the Aluminum EXTRA EXTRA LARGE
I got the single sided ones because I wanted then in silver but the double sided looks like it has more options.

How the heck do I make this neck?

$

0

As you can see, my first suit didn't turn out too badly, but that neck (and my terrible fashion sense) need to change.  So I removed the yellow neck fur, and plan to somehow shrink the neck so it actually looks like a neck instead of looking baggy and ridiculous.  But I'm having two problems while patterning:

As you can see, I did a crap job furring and the fur line around the head is all over the place, making taping difficult

Now, I want this neck to be more tight and snapped/zipped shut since I've had problems with the loose neck+foam-based moving jaw combo causing the head to flop around with sudden head movements and fall off easily.  But I also want it to be long enough in the front to cover part of my chest since the character is male/androgynous and I look ridiculous with boobs both in and out of suit, and a binder is out of the question (fortunately I'm pretty flat-chested).  How would I pattern that with only a head armature with the cut-off shoulders and chest?  Is that even possible?

Adding elastic to ankles?

These are the best feet paws that I've made and I'm super proud of them. One foot is done, but the ankle is very wide and I obviously don't want them falling down. Is there a way I can sew elastic or something to the top while it's already sewed and glued to the foam? If there's a memory relating to this please let me know!!
