Black Friday Fur?

$

I had a quick change of plans to another character to make since the colors I needed for my first were sold out and was totally set on getting my fur from Fabric.com's Blak Friday sale like I did with my last fursuit. But it seems that their fur is discluded from the sale this year. :c Anybody know a reputable fur site that does do Black Friday?

Personal Pocket Fan that I can wear aorund my Neck in Fursuit?

I am looking for a personal pocket fan that I can wear around my neck while I am in my Fursuit. The fan I am looking for is one of those that is box shaped that I can stick in my beak or muzzle and get cool air delivered right to my head. I heard you can find at Walmart but I have been having no joy there locating them.

I am wanting one of these so I don't have to remove my head when I am attending Panels due to overheating in my head due from the lack of breeze in indoor environments. I am hoping to get one to have by MFF so I don't have that problem again.

Gaps inside heads?

First of all, a warm hello to everyone here! I am brand new to fur suiting, and the whole furry community in general really. I've done a lot of browsing, learning, laughing, and going "awww" or "that's so cool" at some of the great suits I see.

Anyway, as I venture into planning and creating a head of my very own (I mean besides the one I grew), I had an idea for increasing ventilation inside the heads, and I didn't find any mention of it in the archives. If you put strips of foam (say, .5" thick by 1 inch wide) around your head, down the sides, etc., making the contact your head in strategic places instead of all over, would that be helpful for increased air circulation? Would it make the head too loose? I haven't worn one before, so I'd believe a "No, it needs to be tight and form-fitting" answer. I wouldn't want a sudden look to the left cause my character to now be looking behind me.

Obviously this is not appropriate the balaclava method, but an idea for all-foam or mesh method. I'm pretty confident this would have to be included from the start (unless one's natural head has shrunk -- and then you probably want to seek medical attention rather quickly), so I thought I'd ask some experienced folks now, before I start. :)

Thanks!

Hello! Does anyone know if Distinctive Fabrics solid long pile is the same as the luxury shag that fursuitsupplies carries? I want to buy some for my new project where I already have leftover white from fursuitsupplies but wasn't sure if they matched since the photo from DF is so much more shiny looking.

Pokemon fursuit questions

Hello! My friend and I are going to have twin fursuits (It's a secret from our friends until reveal) and sadly I can't ask for help on Facebook or else they'll know. So I gotta ask here.
Here's what we're going to be:

Here's what I sketched up real fast for an overlay for our bodies: http://www.ezimba.com/work/141130C/ezimba16923613441000.png

I have a few questions and would just love input in general.
- Would these characters look better as fullsuits?
- How would I be able to make the wings sturdy but not heavy to wear? I'm afraid that wire will not help much, maybe foam is better? (thin 1/2" stuff).
- What kind of fabric would be best for the bodies, fleece, minky..?

Thanks!

Has anyone ever made a dtd for personal or non-personal that could flex to be a Quadsuit Dtd or Normal Dtd all in one or does anyone have suggestions?

Maybe a wireframe inside?

Hi everyone!

I'm just searching for furs to match the colors on the character ref I posted.
I am only after 1/2-1" fur.
Also after a 3" pile fur that is the same color as the lighter brown.
Will have the fur on the chest and underside of the tail be a longer pile fur.
Been searching for a while. But havnt found any that I'm confident in purchasing.

I did find one though that's kind of close. Dirty blonde bunny shag from fursuit supplies-
http://fursuitsupplies.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=35_68&product_id=296

Wondering if anyone has pics of this fur next to crscraft palomino fox fur.

LukeWarm the ULTIMATE Tauntaun suit Project

A while back I mentioned how I really wanted to go overboard with the classic starwars tauntaun jokes as possible.
I've got better since I built SnowBunny, my first tauntuan and I'm feeling a bit more confident about trying this and as soon as possible. I'm really excited to make starwars fans really smile or fall over and have a laughing attack.

I've been very secretive about his purpose and only a handful few know what I plan to do with him. Here is what I had in mind as far as his purpose serves for his existence.

LukeWarm is the, ultimate, tauntaun suit! (Okay not over everyone else's but for his purpose, I have not see anyone do this yet)

SUIT FEATURES:
1. Removable plush guts pouring out of the main seam of the suit. In amongst the guts are Luke Skywalkers various appendages. (Should I include a face peering out of the guts for effect or just leave his arms and feet sticking out? Not sure if I should make a plush-toy face or a more realistic face rendering)
2.Resin eyes
3.More screen accurate rendering in the design and attributes of the suit
4. Multipurpose design that enables the wearer to become a ridiculed, "Lukewarm" tauntaun or a regular tauntaun before his mishap by Han Solo's lightsaber
5. This character has a special vendetta for Han Solo so watch out! He gets tunnel vision when the target locks on!
6.Main seam is going to be velcro, as well as the guts' outer edge that will be hidden when placed under the main seam.

Design Stumps:
How do I make the velcro go one way AND the other for the sake of closing and being hidden for "Normal tauntaun", but locking together with the guts at the same time during "LukeWarm"?

I'm thinking of a flap, but I have trouble envisioning where that flap would go and how it would be hidden during the normal tauntaun stage.

Also, based on my height and such, I know I will have to figure out WHERE the guts will start and where they will end on the suit.

Just in a general note, is this plausible as is or am I overlooking or not considering anything? I've never concocted a suit this detailed and intricate before so I'm a novice just whimsically thinking here, I might not cover all angles. That's where you guys come in :)

First foam base! Redlines and critiques please?

Hello! This is my second time posting to this community. I stopped working on my first fursuit head a long time ago and I've finally picked it back up again. I'd love to get some critiques/redlines on my foam base for a toony mountain lion character.

The character I'm creating is a female mountain lion. I put together a reference sheet, but I haven't really gotten a chance to clean it up. http://sta.sh/01mlu2c70rkv
The character can also be seen here http://megamixter.deviantart.com/art/Flower-Crowns-495665243 (The one in the middle)

Here's my foamwork so far. I've built it on a balaclava and it features an elastic moving jaw
3-4 view no eyes
Front View No eyes
Left Side View No eyes
Right Side No eyes

And here's a few pictures with paper templates for what I think the eyes will look like. I hope to make following eyes or at least semi-following.

Side view eyes

I haven't taken the character's hair poof into account with the foamwork yet. I'll probably do more research before I tackle that, but if anyone has some tips or tutorials that they'd like to share that would be greatly appreciated.
Again, this is my first time creating a fursuit so all crits and redlines are very welcome! Thank you in advance and thank you to this lovely community for being such an amazing resource for information!

Hello, this is my first post. I probably won't post much, at most once a month, so don't get too attached XD! I have a question. Out of curiosity, how do tails stay in place on fullsuits? Since the belt is usually around the waist, there is no belt loop to stop the tail from moving all over the place. How do tails stay in place? Thanks in advance! :3

Help! DF screwed up!

So, on Sunday, 11/30/2014, I ordered fur for an extended black Friday sale from DF. Ordered: 1 yd of each: Neon solid long hair fur > pink; Solid long hair fur > Snow white, aqua. Grand total: $58.68 USD. The aqua is fine. Not the pink and snow white. Snow white: An area of the fur, about 3x8 inches has really short, matted, crusty, stained fur. I shouldn't have been sent that anyway, but I can cut it out and work around it. The pink has completely creased fur fibers, and it is through the whole yard. It's so bad, it looks like curly fur. I can't think of a way to fix it. On top of that, the back is all dirty and stained. Gross. I called their customer service number ten times literally, but couldn't get a hold of anyone. I emailed them and they have yet to respond. If you would like to see the email, please ask! Yes, they have a "No returning or exchanging clearance fabric" policy. The fur WAS on clearance, but that doesn't mean they can send me bad fabric and get away with it, as stated in the email. Please help me on this guys. I am a young furry, under 20 yrs of age, not willing to state my age. I need help. Please. Oh and did I mention THIS IS MY FIRST TIME ORDERING FUR FROM THEM??!?!?!! -is enraged-

Small edits to community profile's fur supplier list.

Hi fursuit community!
Due to the sheer number of issues with one fur supplier, I made a small change to the community profile page.
Distinctive Fabrics has been moved to the bottom of the "fur suppliers in the USA" list with the notation "(check return policy before ordering)" this is due to how many problems that our community members are enduring if they have a problem with their order. Many orders go through perfectly fine, so I feel that this is a professional way to still include them in our comprehensive list, but to let people know that there are many more websites out there that have a better return policy, and we have a choice when it comes to ordering for our projects.

With that said, I would also like to politely encourage people to discontinue the misnomer "DF" when referring to the common shag or luxury shag faux fur fabric that Shannon Fabrics manufactures. It is a furry fandom word that originated right here in our LiveJournal community to describe that specific quality of faux fur. "DF" originated because Distinctive Fabrics was the first to the awareness of the furry fandom that that carried the soft fine grain 2-inch pile faux fur that Shannon Fabrics manufactures under the “Luxury Shag” product line. It only ingrains Distinctive Fabrics as the "only" or "primary" source when it is one of many suppliers. It is also known as shag, punky muppet, or promo shag, all to describe the very same product.

If you have a fur supplier that you noticed is not on our list I would be happy to include it!
If there is a supplier that no longer carries fur, I would also be happy to remove it!

Thanks for your consideration on this topic. :D

Has anyone ever used this stuff?

Has anyone ever used Fabric.com's what they call "faux furs" in any color? In their description they call it a "plush faux fabric."

Here's an example: https://www.fabric.com/buy/0383674/faux-fur-chocolate

The photos make it look like it could be some cheap stuff, but they had a really nice color that I was looking at for a suit. Looks like just a shorter and shinier version of the DF stuff.

Thanks!

Cat face????

Hello again! I am currently taking on a commission to make a panther furusit for someone. I am having the damnest time trying to figure out how to make that nice roundish feline muzzle. I seem to be somewhat hardwired to make canines apparently, and even after looking at both reference of actual panthers, and photos of other makers works I still cant see to figure out how to go about this! I have made 3 muzzles in about 5 hours and none of them worked out the way that they should..anyone has some tips or maybe some WIP shots of cats/large cats that they have made so I can get an idea? it would help me a lot!

Sadly I also tore up all my previous attempts trying to fix them so I have nothing to show for redlines :/

Fursuit hair troubles,

I'm making a fursuit head for the first time with a friend and I've been told by numerous makers that a kanekalon braid would work perfectly for my Fursonas hair style, But I'm wondering if people have experienced negative outcomes with this synthetic hair.

I'm keeping an open mind to what might be best but the last thing I'd like to do is find a long pile in the same matching fur I already have for the character, does anyone have any helpful tips or pointers for me?

A Potential Security Warning: Distinctive Fabrics

$

EDIT: I originally posted this as members-only, but after some thought, I think it should be shared with the community as a whole. But please read and CHANGE. YOUR. PASSWORDS.

I know there's been some fuss in this community regarding DF's customer service, which I've experienced myself. But now there's an issue that I can no longer keep quiet.

I am a software engineer, and I work primarily in web development and security.

Issue one: DistinctiveFabrics.com processes their passwords in plaintext. This means that if you log in on a less-than-secure connection, there's a chance someone could steal your login information. Ok, ok, so it's Distinctive Fabrics, who cares? Well if you're like a majority of people, you MIGHT do what security professionals have been telling you not to do for years and reuse passwords ;) (No shame, I'm guilty of it too!) Is your DF account password the same as your bank account login, your Paypal, or anything else sensitive? If so, CHANGE. YOUR. PASSWORDS. NOW.

My roommate (also a software engineer) was able to snatch up my password and log into my DF account from his own computer in mere minutes, using a program that's readily available called Wireshark. This sort of attack is trivial, and is also a great reason to avoid unsecured wireless connections and to maintain a different password for each account you have.

QUICK EDIT: Uploaded the screenshot with a sample login and password being transferred in plaintext http://imgur.com/JcoZ76G

The second, more complex issues is...

While checking on a recent order (where items had been discontinued and not noted on my order, and where items had been left off), I noticed that my account listed one of my older orders, but not my most recent, under My Account > Orders.

I wanted a digital copy of my old receipt, so I simply edited the URL to my current receipt number, and was automatically taken to my newest receipt--which is normal and correct. However, the curious security professional in me decided to try entering a random order number to see where it would take me.

I was able to access dozens of other customers' orders, including their name, shipping address, personal phone number, order contents, order date, and personal email address. I am personally uncomfortable with this information being essentially wide open for potential abuse. Please keep in mind that this data wasn't found through "hacking"; anyone who can use the keyboard can do this.

I contacted DF about this potential issue, including screenshots and detailed descriptions of my methods, on October 15th. They responded with the following:

"First , let me thank you for the extremely important information you have provided in regards to the website. Our techs have been working on updating the site since it is showing sings of old age and they will work on correcting the issue."

It is now almost mid-December, and I am still able to access other customer information.

I'm not saying you shouldn't use DF ever again, but I think that we all need to be cautious when dealing with their site until they decide to fix things up a little.

I can provide proof images for everything I've stated here (including what I sent to the company itself), although I'd have to do a lot of editing for the ones that have other customer's personal info on them. Let me know if you're interested.

Opinion: Airbrush or drybrush?

I've been drybrushing details onto my fursuit heads for a while now (small things) and wonder if airbrushing would be easier.

For you, what works better? I'd like to use a technique that will make a realistic head look more real, but also help with small dots or stripes that can't be sewn in.

Help please

so, ive become... 'obsessed' with FNaF (five nights at freddys), and i've had a canine head base i made a while ago lying around, so i'm going to make it into a Foxy fursuit head, but ive run into a few problems

first of all, im going to be making it very very toony, mostly going off this picture i drew (its on my dA) http://sarabikitty.deviantart.com/art/Chibi-Foxy-499195076?q=gallery%3ASarabikitty%2F52187546&qo=3

this is what the foam looks like now, sort of, but i've added ears and changed a few things, and i'll be making the muzzle smaller http://sarabikitty.deviantart.com/art/Fursuit-head-base-489766848

my main problem, how ever, is what to use
i have a little red/brown fur left, but that wont be enough to cover it, and i need a lighter color for the muzzle, so i'm wondering how i'd go with a fleece suit. The fabric shops near me dont have the right color furs as it is, but i think i'd be able to get the right color fleece, but im scared to mess it up.
so, just how hard is it to make a fleece fursuit head? i had a look around for some tutorials, but i wasnt able to find anything really helpful.

also, last time i was at the fabric shop, they had a odd minky/fleece fabric, i think it was called nursery fleece. If i'm able to find the right colors of that, i'd use it, but they only had a few plain colors there :P

Puffy Handpaws and Stompy Feet?

$

So I just took a commission for a partial fursuit. SUPER excited since this is my first one but also kind of nervous since he wants me to do things with it that I haven't quite done before. I have a basic idea of what to do for the footpaws, but I'm not sure what to do as far as what material to put on the bottom.
As far as the handpaws, I know how to make 4-fingered handpaws like he wants, but I'm a bit unsure of how to make them "puffy" like he wants. Here'a an example of what he means:

Would it just be a matter or using foam to pad up the fingers, or would i have to create a double layer; make the base gloves and then stuff up the fingers?

I really want to do a good job, and I can't find any tutorials anywhere on how to do it.
Thank you so much!
