does short pile turquoise/cyan fur exist?

i was hoping i wouldn't have to resort to shaving luxury shag turquoise in order to match the pile length of the seal fur that will be next to it.

something like this? http://www.furaffinity.net/view/7140206/

i know most of those furs are local finds but i wasn't sure if anybody knew where i could get that fur or something similar? i checked a lot of fur websites and some older posts on this site to try my luck, but wasn't able to come up with anything.

How much fabric for a digigrade and a faux fur question

Hello everyone, I'm planning for my first fullsuit and it is going to be a digigrade. My question for you is roughly how much fabric do you use on average to make such a suit? I am 5'5" and my costume head is going to have very large ears.

My second question is pertaining to a certain faux fur fabric offered by fabric empire. I am looking at the color "lion beige" (seen here: http://www.fabricempire.com/faux-fur-long-pile-lion-beige-fabric-64-wide-sold-by-the-yard.aspx) for parts of my planned suit. To my frustration they do not offer a swatch of the lion beige color and at this time I am unwilling to pay $20 (cost of a yard + shipping) for a yard of fabric I might not use. So what I'm wondering is- has anyone had any experience with this fur or knows of a suit made using it? If I could see something it's used on I might be able to better gauge if it is the right color for my suit. Thanks a heap!

Stylized fursuits and digitigrade patterns?

Hey all, I've got two questions and I need some input.

Stylized fursuits:
Currently I have one in-use toony fursuit of my character, here. She's cute and all... But I'd like a more "intriguing" fursuit. I used to have a realistic fursuit head (which was destroyed) and a flirty TOONY head (also destroyed). My inspiration comes from this head, and I'm looking build this second head on a DVC base with a face similar to this. Any tips on altering a fursuit face just enough so it'd be like that?

Digitigrade patterns:
My friend is commissioning me for lower parts. The feet and tail will be a breeze... It's just the legs I'm a little confused on. I've done digitigrade padding twice in the past and although it was wonky, it worked. However, the foam was very bulky and things heated up fast. I don't want my friend heating up quickly, he's very active in his fursuit.
My idea was to use either 1/2" or 1" foam and make a paper pattern, transfer it to the foam, hot glue pieces together and attach to sweatpants before furring it. No extreme bulk, the shape is there and it'll be easy to wear. Does that sound realistic or a waste of money?

Thanks!

Ivory Fur?

Can anyone direct me to a darker ivory fur than the norm? I've ordered a few samples this week but all of them are too white for what I need. The color I'm trying to match is not quite an ivory and not quite a beige. It's somewhere in the middle. All the beige's I've seen seem to be too dark. I'm just looking for something that is close to this color and a similar 2" length. Large photos behind the cut.

(a good idea of how much darker it is than white)

shaving the face?

this may sound stupid but i'm not sure which way your supposed to shave the fur on the face do you shave in the direction with the fur or against the fur? some people say it looks bad against but also when you go with it, it doesn't shave it as short it just pushes it down? can some people tell me how they do it? or how they manage this? and sorry for the stupid question.

Fabric shifting during sewing?? Halp! D:

Sewing noob question here: Every time I try and sew some relatively thick fabrics on my machine, the bottom layer always ends up moving a quarter inch or so. I've tried using 10,000 pins but it doesn't seem to make a difference! Does anyone know what's causing this?

Here is a glove liner made from two layers of batting sandwiched between muslin. You can see on the front side that I followed my pink line for the most part.

However, when I flip it....
IMG_9425

Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
The whole bottom layer just moved to the left? I can fix this by re-sewing over the bad parts, but I would never do this on a final product or something I was building for another person. It would also ruin something that required a higher degree of accuracy. This only happens with thick items like faux fur or this glove liner and I'm not sure why. Anyone know what's causing it?

Sewing Machine Help!

My old sewing machine finally died, and seeing as it wasn't made for faux fur at all to begin with I'm surprised it's lasted that long!

Luckily, there's a good used sewing machine dealer in town. I just need help figuring out which model to buy.

My options for sewing machines are a Brother Project Runway NS40, Husqvarna Viking Emerald 118, Brother 3034D Serger, and a Husqvarna Viking Huskylock 910. I really have no idea which one would work the best!

All of them are in my price range. I'm just unsure what is going to be heavy duty enough for sewing multiple layers of faux fur, along with having a good, strong stitch.  Any help would be greatly appreciated! Even if it's just telling me what not to buy, that will greatly help narrow down my choices.

Distinctive Fabric shipping speed?

So I noticed DF has a habit of being crazy slow with shipping fur samples. There is a possibility I may need to order fur from them to get the colors I need, but I'm also on a crunch for time and I was needing to know if once you order if they are just as slow shipping the full orders of fur as they are with the samples, because if they are they absolutely will not be an option for me unfortunately /:.

Thanks!

Rat's got a crooked snout- too late to fix it?

I somehow managed to fleece this guy's entire face without realizing his snout is... listing. Badly.

Is there any way to salvage it without tearing it apart? The mouth is already lined and sewn, and I can't fathom a practical way to get a "skeleton" or framework in there to correct it. If I could just...twist it somehow and have it stay put.

Any ideas you can throw at me would be greatly appreciated!

Short pile fur in bold/non-natural colors

Hello! I've been making suits, well partials, for a while now. But I'm still very inexperienced with fur selection, (and many other things, there aren't any IRL furrys I know of in my town) I have made several heads, that are... Okay, they wouldn't win prizes or anything, but they still are good. (I've also made some horrible ones) But I really want to make one that is stunning, and the design I have in mind requires some short pile fur in non-natural colors, like blue and turquoise. And Teal. I have done a bit of research on the topic and found two places that look promising.

Now the only fur I've worked with before is Shag fur from Amazon. (It was cheap...) but I know that I can't sacrifice quality any more. So any site suggestions are welcomed.

Ah, I am so frustrated!!! I'm almost done furring my fursuit head, but when I tried it on... It's super tight! I can barely get my head in and out. This is very frustrating, because I made sure the head was roomy while foaming it.
(It is an all foam head.)
I'm really at loss of what to do... It's impossible to add more foam to the back, because the fur is already sewn and glued. I really hope I don't have to throw this head out. Please, please help!
I'm also terrified that once I get the neck sewn on, it will be impossible to get in and out of the suit.
(Sorry I sound so desperate, I'm just really upset, I don't want to have to scrap this head..)

Isopropyl alcohol on fur?

$

So, I just came back from a (long, hot, sweaty) fursuit outing in my new suit... And I'm wondering if you can use isopropyl alcohol on fur? (a 60/40 solution with water) I have already sprayed the inside of the head with the solution, and let dry, but I'm wondering if I can use it to clean fur, too. I've looked around for information, but I've only seen people talking about alcohol on foam, not fur.

My neck fur has gotten a bit dirty for my liking (I just want to make sure there is no bacteria in it), so I'm wondering if I could spritz some alcohol on the fur and brush it in? Please tell me if that would work, all help is appreciated!!

(If it isn't a good idea, what are other ideas to clean the neck fur?)

Worried about Texture

Hello everyone! :D

I'm currently making a dumbo rex rat! It's loosely based on my actual pet rat.
rat3

My goal with this fursuit is to use furs that I currently have, so I can open up some space.
(Please ignore the wreck that my kitchen table is, it's my only craft space, lol)

Long story short, the fur I'm using is a sort of mauve color, and it's got a crushed, choppy texture-
texture

From a distance, it looks pretty good in a rexxy sort of way.
ok
far

I'm super happy with it! Until I get up close, however... it looks like I took to shaving it with a kitchen knife.
color
ehh

Maybe I'm just being paranoid. The body itself is a mixture of lavender, chocolate brown, mostly white, and the mauve, with the former three being your typical fur texture. I'm hoping the different textures will make it look good- it's also why I added a makeshift bow, to break it up a little.

Basically what I want to know is what everyone's opinion is on what the head looks like so far. Does the fur make it look bad? Have I been looking at it too long? Is something else not right? I have about 4 yards of this far and I'd love to use it, but I'd hate to waste it if it doesn't look right. Everything is pinned and temporary, so I can fix anything that needs to be fixed.

Any and all critique is welcome, drag it through the mud if you have to! :D

Thanks everyone!

Hello everyone!

I'm on the hunt for an orange seal fur to match this character:

Has anyone seen a fur of this color before? I'm having a heck of a time finding something, and I want to make a surprise for one of my best friends. :c

Adding feathers to mask?

Hi! I'm really new here! I've ordered a resin eagle blank not to long ago and I'm making an ornate hawk eagle mask soon, but the thing is, I want to add some feathers for the mohawk they have. http://www.sciencephoto.com/image/381948/350wm/Z8320356-Ornate_Hawk-Eagle-SPL.jpg

Now I've seen a lot of wonderful masks sporting feathered accents but I'm at a loss as far as figuring out how to put them in fur. Any suggestions or tutorials any furs might know about?

FursuitSupplies silver bunny shag?

Hi all,

I'm thinking of using the silver bunny shag from FursuitSupplies, but I have some questions I'm hoping you can answer.

Firstly, is it a solid grey colour all the way through? Or does it have a darker undercoat?
Secondly, does anyone have any images of this fur being used on a fursuit?
And finally, how fast is FursuitSupplies with sending out your order?

Many thanks!

Lining a fursuit head - there has to be an easier way?

$

I feel like I'm really making it way too hard for myself when I line a head and would like to line my heads more efficiently and just better in general. It is frustrating and I keep trying different techniques and every time it takes me forever.

Right now I'm using lycra and I usually "attempt" to make a tape pattern of the inside of the foam head and sew the lycra, which never ends up being the correct size so I have to stretch it into the head while gluing it and urrrggghhh....so tedious and frustrating. The last time I lined a head I ended up just tearing the back of the head open to line it and it still was a pain in the rear.

So how is the best way to pattern the inside of the head and the best material (it seems like the glue soaks through the lycra that I use in some areas sometimes....is that a common thing?) and what do you guys do in general to work quickly and efficiently at this process. If you guys have pictures of how you do it that would be amaaaaazing because I suck at understanding things.

Thanks!
