Stuffing Tails

$

A couple quick questions here about something that I might be making way too complicated for myself.

How do you stuff a long skinny tail that you can't fit your hand in? Do you roll up the top like you would to turn a sock inside out until you can reach the bottom and then unroll as you stuff?

Also, in a thicker tail with a fleece base (one you can't just sew closed straight across with the belt loops), would you stuff the tail and then sew the base on by hand, or sew the base on partially, stuff it, and then hand sew the stuffing gap closed?

What if there is some kind of wire or plastic armature inside the tail, would you put that in first and then stuff around it, or stuff it first and then add the armature and hope it doesn't pack the stuffing down too much?

Antlers?

Where could I buy some 3-point antlers for my fursuit head? i'd prefer them to be larger than smaller, and all i can find are little 2-point antlers. Also, for the same project, i'm planning on getting a resin dragon base, and I was wondering if you guys think that just using the scaly resin or using short pile fur would be better? here's the head: https://img1.etsystatic.com/034/0/9046832/il_570xN.557988907_89cg.jpg
I would post a picture of the character, but i don't have my pen for my tablet atm.
aah and one more thing, if I were to do talon-like front paws, what kind of cover would you guys suggest? Fur or something else?

I'm about to start sculpting teeth (and a nose) for my fursuit head... However, I have two types of clay, and I'm not sure which one would be best.
I have Crayola Air-Dry clay, and Super Sculpey Original. Does anyone have experience which any of these clays?
Thank you!

Hi all

So I am working towards getting a fursuit, but I am looking for some fur that ill like.

I love this "Mellow Yellow" that was used on this suit:  http://www.furaffinity.net/view/13651787/

Sadly the fur is no longer made and all stock of it from shops have sold out.

Anyone know a fur like it?
I have been getting samples from all over but can't find anything I like.

Any suggestions?

Digitigrade Legs Pattern?

Okay, so I want to make digitigrade legs for a fursuit that I'm starting once I can get a few more supplies. But one thing I'm stuck on is how to make the pattern! I am not planning on making my padding out of foam, I was going to make something of a pocket thing and stuff it. But I don't know how to do that without a pattern and I dont know how to make a pattern for the legs without having padding. Does anyone know how to do this or could link me to a tutorial that explains?

Foam carving tool?

I purchased this tool recently to carve foam at the suggestion of someone here -> X

However, said tool has not worked at all, and I'm at a loss for tools to carve with other than scissors. Does anyone have any suggestions to help this process along a bit?

tail feathers

Hello everyone!

So I'm working on a bird tail and I've done several in the past with various methods of getting the tails feathers to stick out a bit and not flop down against the back of your legs. I've built it around solid foam, used delrin rods, and ironed interfacing to them. I was wondering if anybody had any better ideas that I was overlooking? I'm sure there's a better method I'm not thinking of. Thanks guys! :)

Anyone use this plush fabric from mendels for a suit before?
They discontinued the orange seal I was gonna use and this looks like the best alternative.
Please post in use pics if possible.
Thank you!

If nothing else, then could someone point me in the direction of 5 yards for orange seal fur?

Looking for Purple Fur!

So, I have a suit that has three variants of purple on it and I would like to see if there are any "nonDF" purples flying around that I havent seen :]  Mostly, I'm looking for all purple swatches I possibly find before making my combo decision.

Purples we have:
- DF Purple
- DF Lavender
- DF Plum
- I'm Stuffed SP-603
- Fursuitsupplies Grape Bunny shag
- Mohair Bear Luxury Shaggy Purple

Is there any other ones floating around I've missed?

Black Monkey Shag?

I'm hoping to find some black monkey shag for a future project, and looking at the usual websites black seems to be the only color that is out of stock!

If anyone can maybe point me toward a website I am overlooking where I could order some; or if someone has some I could potentially buy it would be much appreciated!

Ideally I would love to get one yard of black monkey shag, but I could probably make a half yard work.

Thank you!!

Suiting at a non-furry con?

So in August, I'll be suiting for the first time at Dragoncon in Atlanta. I know the "fursuiting rules" of a normal furry con, but I had a few questions about other conventions.

1. Since this will be my first time public fursuiting in general, I don't have much heat resistance built up, so I may need to change out of suit often. I've downloaded maps of the floor plan of the hotel, so I'll know where bathrooms that I can change in are, but I was wondering if there may be a better option? I haven't heard anything about there being a headless or cosplay lounge at dragoncon or any other related conventions, and since I live pretty near to the con, I don't have a hotel room. (I'm just going to take the bus to the con every day.)

2. I'm not sure what to transport my suit in every day, since I won't have a hotel room. Is there a specific bag that's recommended, or something I can do with the suit when I can't wear it any longer? (whatever I carry it in doesn't need to be huge, all I have is a partial with a tail, a head, and hands. I just don't want something HUGE that someone may want to steal, but at the same time I don't want something that would squish my head. )

3. (I'm sorry that this is such a stupid question, but I honestly don't know the answer.) Do fursuiters normally remove their suits before attending a panel? I've never heard of people doing it, but I was just kind of wondering because of the limited senses that come with wearing a suit. I'm also a little nervous about wearing a fursuit to panels because my suit's ears are pretty large, and I don't want to make anyone angry by accidentally having my ears in their way. Am I just being irrational worrying about this stuff?

That's all! I'm really if these were stupid questions, I'm kind of a newbie to all of this stuff.

I think you guys would find this interesting.

Help fixing the back of a foam base?

$

I'm really sorry for double posting, but i'm really stumped here, and I don't want to do any more damage than I've already done.

I was working on my head, and i was quite happy with my results. However, I still needed to round out the top and back of the head, so that they: A: weren't just squares, and B: so I could add the ears on.

And then I screwed up.

Badly.

I honestly wasn't sure what to DO with the back of the head initially, and I read in an earlier thread that I could just cut out the back and use the back of my head as a shape. I attached some elastic to the inside of the head so it would stay on, (the elastic works quite well despite all of the stupid mistakes I made. The head still fits well, although it is a tiny bit trickier to put it on, because I need to be aware of the elastic's placement.) but now I don't know what to do. Obviously my head isn't as big as the suit's, so it'd look weird to just use my head at this point, and I tried just re-filling in the space with foam, but the way I cut it made that extremely difficult, and the head still wouldn't be rounded out. At this point, I'm just wondering what the best course of action would be. I really don't want to make an entirely new head.

(P.s:this is my first head. If anything else can be corrected, please tell me! It's a fennec/wolf mix.)

attaching feet, and tail help needed.

So from what I've read back in memories people usually say "no don't attach them it can cause stress on the seems, try this". But I've seen pro markers, such as Phoenix wolf attach the tails to the body, and they seem to hold up just fine.
So I'm wondering, what kind of a stitch do I need to attach them to a pair of 3/4 pants?

The tails going to be over 4ft long, so I'd rather have it attached then heavily on straps.

Also for attaching feet, I've heard its better to make the feet be like slippers instead of built on shoes? I really love that flawless look from digigrade to feet.
Is there a tutorial on how to make plush feet paws? I've only ever worked with gluing foam to shoes.

Bear Cub WIP

Hi everyone! I'm working on a bear cub premade to hopefully get done in time for a quicksale before Megaplex.

I've been looking at a lot of bear photos and what makes cartoon bears actually look like bears, but I'm still not sure if I captured the essence of the species yet.

Obviously, it is still lacking ears and a nose, but how is it looking so far?

Okay so when I get some funding this summer/fall i plan on starting to build a full or 3/4 suit of one of my many chars. The question i have really has nothing to do with the differnce between the two but on how you do the tails? Do you sew them on so they are attached or how do you cut a hole for them to go through?

First foam base

imageI was wondering if anyone would be able to give a more experienced opinion on my fursuit head base. I started it one night about two years ago, and put it down until a couple of days ago. It was a very sorry sight, but I did what I could to make it better. Anybody have advice? Also, any idea how to make it have a smiley mouth without redoing everything? image
Sorry if I did anything wrong, this us my first livejournal post.
