Hey everyone, it's been too long! :D

Anyways, I finally picked up my cat mask again; I need to finish this thing already. XD I took y'all's suggestions and revamped the face. No more tiny hidden eyes and clay nose!

Now, I need to decide if it looks better with eyelids (left) or without (right). And should I put on some white eyebrows or what? XP My fiance can't decide what he likes better, and since I'm making this to sell, I'd like some general opinions from fellow furries. :3

Also, I have a couple irrelevant questions, if I may. :3
First of all, I'm going to try to make a cow partial before Megaplex rolls around when my balaclava arrives. For the feet-hooves, is it ok to use real cow hooves (sold as treats at pet stores)? If so, what should I coat them in, if anything? P: Also what should I use for finger-hooves?

Secondly, what shaver is good for fursuits? I have a Conair pro shaver that's great for hair, sucks for fur. Is there one that's build for more heavy duty things like thick DF fur?

Toothless! My first suit

So I've been fascinated by fursuits for a long time and have wanted to try making one for awhile, despite my limited sewing ability and even more limited budget.  Recently, I decided to actually give it a try and made a Toothless the dragon costume.  I only had a week to pull it together from the time I got the idea to the time of the convention I wanted to make it for.  So I still need to make feet for him and the paws badly need to be redone.  Still, I'd like to show off the few pictures I have of it and maybe get a little feedback?  Here are links to a few of the better ones.  I haven't had the chance to get good pics of the tail yet.

Toothless being cute
Toothless and Firefly crew
Toothless and teddy bear
Toothless and Batman

This is my first time making anything like this, so I know I've probably made a lot of mistakes.  I used a black hoodie as the base for it and built the head out of foam and attached it to the hood.  I plan to make a belly panel of some kind to hide the zipper and pockets.  I used fleece, because my mom (who is good at sewing) recommended it as a forgiving and easy to work with material.  The tongue is made out of a scrap of pink shiny material my mom let me have from a past project.  The wings have a bent up pair of hangers in them to hold them up.  The eyes are make from a pair of lenses from giant joke sunglasses.  I cut the pupils out and painted them, then glued see-through black fabric to the insides.  The visibility is... not great. XD  Still, I didn't crash into anything or anyone, so I guess it's good enough with a handler to help out.

If you have any comments or tips, especially on how I can try to make Toothless's rather unique feet and paws, I'd love to hear them.  Thanks for reading in any case :)

Need Critiques On a Foam Head Plan, and a Few Questions!

$

Hello everyone! I'm a first time fursuit maker, and I made a plan for my head that I'd like to share in case anyone has any input, advice, or redlines! (she's a fennec fox)

(Sorry for the bad picture, i'm on my phone)

If you can't read my messy handwriting on the side, it says Green= Green foam and Tan/Egg Shell = white foam.

Along with that, I have a few questions!

1.I know that white foam is a lot lighter than green, will the fact that I'm only using it on the lower portion of the head and the ears affect the head in any way?

2. Is there any way to get the very base of my base (if that makes sense. I guess it could be defined as the piece of foam that initially goes around my head before anything is glued on) as round as it is depicted in the drawing? I know making darts can help, but I didn't know if there were any other methods to round it out.

3.What is the best method for rounding out the top of the head? I've seen quite a few methods used, but I'm just wondering what's the most effective.

4. Does anything go on the BACK of the head, or is it just left alone? I've seen tutorials for the face of the foam base, but they never mention doing anything to the back of the head.

Thank you in advance for any input!

P.s: I'd also like to say thank you to anyone that I didn't formally thank in my last posts, I've been having some wifi issues and I couldn't respond to comments due to connections being down most of the time. :c

I'm trying to decide whether or not to scrap this (probably will) but this is the beginning of my first fursuit. This think has not turned out the way I planned, and I'm not liking it much.

Should I scrap this, or would somebody mind helping me have it look less... Lopsided...

Head material questions

Hey guys! My friend is having me build her a Typhlosion mask, and I have a few questions about the construction.

1. Base: Would a baseball cap be strong enough to hold this type of mask on someone's head? I'm afraid of it tipping forward. We would like more structure than a balaclava, but a bike or construction helmet is probably too bulky.

2. Foam: I live very remotely, and we're doing our best to source things in my town to save on shipping. The only foam I will be able to buy are those yellow camping pad things. Is that an appropriate material or should we order the green stuff instead? I actually got access to Joannes right after posting, so now I have obnoxious amounts of green foam :)

3. Fleece: This mask will be "skinned" with fleece. I know any lumps and bumps in the foam will show through; will a layer of batting be enough to prevent this or should we purchase a Surfoam Shaver?

4. Vision Material: The wearer will see through the mask's tongue, and obviously I would like the tongue to be pink. I was thinking of stretching pick nylons over this stuff. Conversely, I could just paint the mesh, but it would really show the texture. Any suggestions for this?

5. Glue: I have read that hot glue tends to fail when it gets wet. Should I be using E6000 plus Scotch Super 77 for this project instead?

I'm making my second suit, and I'm just curious about how to achieve a smiling look on your fursuit (like, how to make the smile go up the side of the face). I'll include some picture references, because I'm bad at explaining :P

Also, how would one go about making a smile with teeth? Like this fursuit, in a way.

Hello! I'm working on my second canine head, it is of my fursona, Akota. (She is a wolf!)
This is only my foam base, and something seems... Off. I need a lot of help on this one.
Pictures under the cut!

(Sorry about my awkward poses, I was trying to get a clear photo of the head haha!)
(Also, I HAVE NOT added a lower jaw yet, so it's still very in progress!!)

Here! I think these pictures should do it, but if you need any more, I'd be glad to post more angles. Thank you!
Also, if someone had a nice moving jaw method for an all-foam head, I'd love to hear that too (:

Finally done!

Which White Fur Do you Guys Recomend

$

I am noticing that there's option for 2 different styles of white fur available that are around the 7/8-15/16 inch pile from CR's Crafts or Monterey Mills. Which one holds up better in the long run and is less likely to matte up on me?

This is the cheaper option and my swatch from CR's seems to react better under a black light:

The Lower Priced Option CR's Fur - Soft Teddy - White or Teddy Jr. - White Teddy Junior

http://www.crscraft.com/products/product.asp?pid=91015&L1=2&L2=13&L3=0&L4=0&L5=0&search=1 CR's Item #91015 or
http://www.montereymills.com/Products/Craft/InStockLine/TeddyJr.aspx MM Item #0315-0400A

And the Higher Priced Option which is CR's Fur - Cubby Bear - White or MM's Cubby Bear - White Cubby Bear

http://www.crscraft.com/products/product.asp?pid=91051&L1=2&L2=13&L3=0&L4=0&L5=0&search=1 CR's Item #91051 or http://www.montereymills.com/Products/Craft/InStockLine/CubbyBear.aspx MM's Item #0342-0480A

So which one shall I go with the Cubby or the Teddy Jr?

Thank You

Gluing DVC foam

I recently bought some foam spikes from DVC and I was wondering what sort of glues would be safe to use on the foam, but strong enough to bond it to metal. I'm gluing the spikes to neodymium magnets so that they'll be removable. Would Quick Grip or E6000 be safe for this type of foam?

-T'was my basic introduction, loves.-

So, that gives out the basic introduction. I'm mostly a digital artist. >u< So... getting into fursuiting... would it be easy, difficult, or the general introduction into things? I'm going to slowly gather funds to acquire furs, foams, etc., but, I would like to know which is the best way to go and what is the normal budget for fursuiting. I'm a little rusty with introductions, and... basic explaining, especially when things go public. I am extremely nervous, so if it's choppy... that's why. And I apologize, if it is.

More Weird Fur

I found some more weird faux fur at a local store, and am trying to see if anyone has any leads on where I can find more! It's kinda short piled, but a really night bubblegum color. The store only had ~1 yard of it, but I'd love to have some more.

Additionally, does anyone have any tips on storing faux fur? I'll be moving soon, and want to avoid crinkling anything while in storage or transport.

This picture is kinda blown out, but the first one shows the color really well.

Some Questions

Hey guys, I just have some questions here.

I am going to be making a cow partial hopefully in time for Megaplex when my bursitis heals. Until then, lots of research! :o
I have seen a lot of artists lately only foam the front of the face (and cheeks and ears and stuff). Is this the better thing to do rather than having a 360 foam base? (I will be working with a balaclava base and foaming over it)
I want my cow to be cute, but not have a head that is too big/round. On my last mask, the black and white cat, I encountered a few large forehead issues. Would leaving an open back-head eliminate this problem?
I would think only have a foam face would weigh down the front and cause it to slide; is this the case at times?
Can you make this type of base with a moving jaw?

For hoof-feets, what type of shoes should I build off of (No lifted-heel)?
Is it ok to make the hooves out of fleece?

So, this is my first post here, and it's not really construction related, but with a lot of the commuinity active here as well, or at least looking for reference, and since it wasn't posted here yet, I figured it might be a good idea if just for a bit that this was up here!

FA user "ThatStuffInsideLavaLamps" has had her fursuit head stolen tonight at the Furmeet in Cape Cod area. Her suit is a Christmas Dog. Please be on the look-out for this! She's supposed to go to AC.

If anyone finds it please contact either Her, Cynical-Sergal or DoctorAlgebra.

(a lot of this was ganked from Cynical-Sergal's original 'STOLEN' post, cause I'm bad at wording)

Critiques and redlines please...?

Hello...again...

A few months back I started a Furfrou head, and ran into a few problems with it. So, instead of staring at it and getting incredibly frustrated with it, I started a new head with a different character, following the same basic-ish head shape and expression as the Furfrou so that I could apply the techniques I learned when I started on it again.

Besides, I don't like to work on one thing at a time.

Anyway, the character I'm going for is this guy:

tsighumph

And here's what I have so far...(Ignore the messy mess)

Picture 014Picture 012Picture 010

Everything is pinned down right now, just in case I need to change anything. (Including his big ol' eyebrows).

I'm more or less going for a 'toony look with this fellow, I'm loosely basing him off of a Dingo. I don't really wanna give him a stop because I don't want to make his head any bigger to accommodate glasses, and I want to set his eyes inside like following eyes, but not exactly following,  but it's proving hard to not favor one eye while walking around in him, as his eyes are a little further apart than I wanted...

But the eyes really aren't a problem at this point. It's his muzzle. I need a bit of input before I glue it gown and start on the cheeks. Is it looking alright?

(I suck at wording things, and I talk a lot, oops.)

Toothless

I'm planning on making a partial-full Toothless and I'll be making the head on a balaclava base.
I've got a few things that will be hard to get where I am and wondering if there are any online sources. I'll be needing resin cabachons for his eyes, quite large maybe 4 inches.
I'll also need a tongue, as I'm not experienced in casting. I may need to look at getting these comissioned. I need to get a balaclava too. I'm not sure what I'll be using for his mouth as I'm planning at making him with his teeth retracted. Any ideas? Fleece? Or silicone (again.. not very good for me as mentioned before)
I also need expanding (?) paint. I heard it or some similar product was used for a toothless quadsuit.

I'm planning on making the head before July 18th. So ample time for US shipping. I'm in Aus.
