Hey all! After about 2 months of working, I finally completed my partial project in time for Anthrocon! With the help of my amazing friend EvilBirdie who helped me pattern and sew the head pieces. I just wanted to thank everyone here for all the amazing tutorials, help and advice! It is so great that everyone here helps each other out and offers advice.
Well, here is how my second attempt at a partial fursuit turned out!
At the time I'm not particularly looking for Critique, I just want to enjoy the suit at AC. :) I may however touch up little details after the con! It does have some flaws I am aware of, though! The ears (which I re-foamed and re-attached 4 times before settling) were incredibly difficult to get symmetrical. So, even after re-doing them 4 times, they are still slightly off! I also found the elastic warped the foam and made the entire head slightly off. I use a hybrid style balaclava/foam base which I probably wont do again if I ever decide to attempt another. The saber-fangs were also incredibly difficult to set symmetrically! I had to fight with those a bunch before getting them to look somewhat okay. I also made the mistake of fleecing the inner lower jaw before furring. I read some people do it before, and others, after. I found it was very hard to fur evenly over the fleece, and was debating refleecing over what I had done, but was afraid to mess it up. Next time, I think I will fleece the lip after the furring is done.Lastly, next time if I try foam again I would like to try to get my hands on a foam block. I was using 1-2inch foam (im not sure exactly) but it was not thick enough to create bulky areas like cheeks and muzzle. I had to glue several pieces and bits of foam and then carve it down to get a shape x.x it made the process long and it was hard to cut out symmetrical shapes for each side.
and for anyone interested, I did document the entire making of of the head, just to see how much it transformed from the beginning to the end.
In short, the sculpted bits are all created with apoxie sculpt..eyelids, slightly on tear duct, bottom teeth, saberteeth (first time using the stuff, it's really great!). To avoid making the saber teeth and nose really heavy, I did the base out of aluminum foil and tape, and covered them with a layer of apoxie sculpt. The nose was however made with sculpty. I did not have access to an airbrush, so all the markings were created with watered down craft acrylics and a toothbrush, which I'm glad I came across that technique on here.
Since I didn't know how to use a sewing machine, I stitched the hand paws and tail completely by hand, as well as the paw pads and I also did a bitch of stitching on the feetpaws but they are mostly glued. I anticipate the bottoms getting destroyed since I don't have any "fursuit sandals" so I will most likely fix that up after the con.
For the details I did not make, the resin claws were purchased 'miscasts' (they worked perfectly for me!) from Crystumes and the eye blanks were plastic cabachon thingers I bought online and then painted. I did not want to attempt casting resin eyes as last time I did it was a complete fail, they had micro bubbles everywhere and ended up yellowing.
Yeah, that's pretty much it :) Thanks again guys, for your help! Eventually my friend will help me create a bodysuit for her. I learned a lot creating this project. I am mainly a 2D traditional artist, so working with 3D sculpting was a challenging project, but also refreshing!
