Some pointers for padding the inside of a resin base? Also, furring.

I just bought and furred a DVC small feline resin base.
The outside turned out great, but the inside has a few problems.

When I try to open the mouth, my chin just slips against the back of the base's tongue, especially when I sweat a little. I tried gluing some fleece to it, but that just rubbed against my chin painfully.
The base also just seems to move away from my face when I try to open my mouth. Tightening the elastic helped a little, but not much.
I also noticed some painful bumps on the inside up near the forehead area that dig into my eyebrows. Would some fleece or foam padding fix this?

I'm also having a lot of trouble seeing through the eye ports. I may have gotten the fur too close around the edges, but if I hadn't, the edges of the plastic would have shown through. I can't wear the head at all in busy spaces. What do?

Anyone have experience with DVC bases?

Help On Search Please

I just ordered from DoctoredLocks, a kanekalon jumbo braid. I really want faux fur the match the color or closely match the color I am ordering. I have had no luck in finding this color for years and it's very irritating. Please if anyone can direct me in the right place I would be so grateful.

Color: http://puu.sh/8QBSx.png

I want to use the hair for the mane and the faux fur on the ears. I need them to match. I'm desperately searching for this color and it's a nightmare. :( I don't know anything about kanekalon hair, but I definitely was not ordering from nftech (or whatever it's called) X'D Way out of my budget.

My first finished fursuit... and a "dangerous" one to boot!

Should have uploaded this earlier, but was having issues ripping from the masquerade DVD.

At any rate, here's the (improved) version of my first finished fursuit, Darkwing Duck! I say improved because I made and wore him at Arisia 2014, but was unhappy with the saggy butt and bulky neck. Didn't have time to fix those until a week before Costume Con 32, which I also wore him to. He seemed to be a hit with the crowd.

(Yes, the mouth messed up, but I know why and have fixed that problem. I just haven't gotten a chance to get a video of the working moving mouth.)

Overall, not a bad start to fursuiting, I think.

has anyone built a DTD stand? I'm about to do a couple fursuits that require some body shaping and I'm thinking a stand would be helpful!

Easy and Cheap Silicone Mold

Hey guys!
I found a cheap and easy way to make silicone molds by using tubes of 100% silicone and dish detergent.
http://matrixarmory.blogspot.com/2012/01/mold-making-cheap-and-easy.html
And here it is by video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C6z3_dcP1_M

I've also tried oogoo as a mold, which is silicone and cornstarch. It works yet its very tedious and there is a chance your mold may have small holes in it. But either way works if you're short on cash or just feel like using an alternative method.

As for a mother mold, I've used plaster wrap which goes for about $5-$9 for about 4in x 5yds. Its somewhat study and gets the job done nicely but I would recommend layering it with more.

sock paws (sock material)

I'd like to make some sock paws and have noticed several people mentioning that while what they're making are referred to as sock paws, they're actually making the "socks" themselves out of another material.

So, my question is -- what material would be best for that sort of thing? Could I use a lycra type material? I'm thinking it'd be best to pick a material that wicks away moisture instead of absorbing it and also has some elasticity. Lycra/spandex maybe?

Also, think I may have asked this before but wondering if I should foam anywhere else besides the toe area? I'm afraid just foaming the toes will make them look out of proportion to the rest of the foot if I leave it not foamed. Thoughts?

Thanks!

Finding right head mannequin?

I've been trying to find a head mannequin with real head proportions and am having a difficult time finding one, or finding one that's highly detailed and out of my price range.
I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction? :)

Tail and attachment question!

It's been a really long time since I've posted to the Fursuit LJ community I just realized. :O

Anyway, I'm wondering about the best way to create and attach a tail to my current fursuit project!

I'm making a tail that needs to be off of the ground and relatively non-flexible (crocodile!). I'm a huge fan of making sure my costumes are easy to transport, so I'd like the tail to be separate from the bodysuit and also as lightweight as possible.

tailsketch

My intention is making the black stripe at the base of the tail a sort of socket and then have the tail "plug" into the socket for a relatively seamless transition. What do y'all think? How would I best construct the tail for something like that, solid foam (my current prototype is rings of foam on a wire contraption that seems like it'll be a pain to complete)? Also what do you guys think about how to attach the tail to myself and make sure that it's stable? Just a thick belt, or something else?

If you need any further clarification, let me know and I'll try to scribble out some more diagrams. :3

Thanks!

searching for grey fur?

I'm searching for both light and dark grey furs, preferably shortpile, but I'll shave down some longpile fur if I get desperate enough haha!

Anyway, I'm hoping to find some to match this ref:

elis_par_msdelicious

I've snooped around DF, Fabric.com, and CRS Crafts, but I haven't been able to find anything, unless anyone knows of something I've missed?

I'd like it to be shortpile as I'm wanting to make a formfitting suit, sort of like Belo4ka's: Sofia12938

I might consider buying some NFT fur, since that way I can buy stretchy stuff (making the form-fitting thing a lot easier!)

"Frosted Pumpkin" alternative?

Me again!  I'm still on the hunt for the perfect furs for my next suit.

I've gotten most of them picked out, but one in particular I'm a little worried about.

I found a fur on Etsy that looks perfect for the inner spot color on my leopard fursona.

But there's two problems.

One, while the base is almost spot-on [hah!], it's tipped with black that I'd need shaved down/off.  This leads into my second problem, which is that I'm afraid it'll come out too short compared to the base fur and outer spot fur I've picked out.

Here's a comp I did that shows you guys the color I'm aiming for.  [The inner spot color.]

My question this time is, have any of you seen a plain--or plainer--fur than this that has a similar color?  Sort of a...Pale, natural red rusty color, I guess?  I've looked all around but all the ones I've found are too far on the orange side of things.

I appreciate the help, as always!

Wrinkles: Beaver Fur!

From Syfabrics :( wrinkles all over. I have 7 yards of black! A very large amount.
So.... What's the best way to get these out?

I think we need a tag in here for wrinkles, I have been google searching and only finding results for long fur. I am thinking about....

*Machine washing and hanging + brushing. Fabric softener/hair conditioner.
*Dryer: checking every 5 minutes + brushing.
*Hair dryer? Not too sure about it trying it, or using it as last resort.

Any other ideas? Thanks! :3

Aaaagh Rust Fur

Hey guys, it's me again. I am still having troubles finding fur colors. I'm looking for a rusty reddish-brown seal or beaver fur. Anything short in that color, really.

I see short fur in that color being used on ears everywhere, I know it must be out there somewhere. When looking at fursuits other artists have made, it's really hard to know what is available on the internet and what is only available from L.A.'s Fashion District (I'm East coast). All I need is a half yard for big floppy ears. D: Anyone see this kind of stuff available online? Anyone have a spare half yard they could sell me?

I know that the photos show all different types, but I just need short rust fur. AC is approaching fast and I don't have all the fur I need yet. >_<
Please help me! Thank you!

eyeses

AHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Its been a couple years since I made my last fursuit head, so I gave it another go ahah. She's meant to be a cheetah... spotty cat... feline. I more or less made up the design as I went along (cheetah ears aren't huge and pointed and tufted!)

Not shown in the picture are a black/white mohawk and subtle eyelashes!

Some things that kinda bother me about it:

-One cheek is thicker than the other
-She needs TEETH
-I feel like the nose needs more depth? Its just foam covered in black fleece.
-Something seems... off? to me about the eyes. I'm not sure if making the eyelids a bit bigger would help (I didn't want "bedroom eyes"), or by switching the black fur for white and airbrushing on the "cats-eye eyeliner" look.

Since these photos were taken I've added whiskers and trimmed her ear-fluff a lil. Eventually she'll be fullsuit! I just need to re-do the tail and make the bodysuit :D

this question is for those suit makers in the 80's/90's

hey guys, im doing a final art project where i need to show two stages of a past object, how the current object looks, and how the object may look in the future.

i've decided to make this object a fursuit (my teacher approved it). i don't need any help on the present and future, but it's the past im struggling on. of course when i search "how were the first fursuits made" or something along those lines, i always get results of people's first fursuits (from present day XC)

if possible, i would like a description/example of how a fursuit looked/was built in the 80's, and another in the 90's (since i need 2 past stages)

thanks for any and all help uvu it means a lot.

Sewing machine help?

I own a Husqvarna H class 100q, and its decided to be broken today. I have a commission that needs to be worked on, things to be made for AC, and i can't to anything until the machine is fixed.

It won't pick up the thread from the bobbin at all. It got jammed so i unjammed it and made a click noise (that aint good). So i though everything was somewhat ok and tried to sew again, the thread refuses to be picked up. I pulled apart the machine to see if the timing is off, and I'm honestly not sure if it is or isn't, as everything i could find on the net has nothing to do with this machine. I tried carefully adjusting what i believe was the timing mech and that did nothing either. I don't see any broken bits, is there something i can do, or do i have to take it to a shop? I rather not take it somewhere if it can be helped.

Mystery Fur Identification!

I was at a local fabric store today, and picked up these faux furs! The only issue is that I have no idea what they are. They're a little bit coarser than DF, a little shorter piled, but have really really gorgeous colors.

photo

The dusty purple and the maroon both have a few white or lighter colored hairs mixed in them, and the rusty orange has some yellowish hairs mixed in.

Does anyone have any idea what these might be?

I am trying to make my first fur suit. I am a very long time lurker but never had the guts to try making a suit before.I am trying for a dog, just a general mut. I don't have any concept art because I can't draw. I made this using Matrices tutorial. Any help would be super. I have adjusted one side of the muzzle, I noticed it was a slightly longer size. Also how to make it smile?

Thanks

Making casts for fursuits with hypoallergic latex rubber

$

Hi community! I didn't see a tag for this, so I'm going to assume this may need more discussion. I have recently started working for a company where I get pounds of latex rubber to take home. The latex rubber is actually from a hypo allergic plant called Gauyule and doesn't contain the same proteins that cause allergic reactions in people with Latex Type I and II allergies (which I also happen to be).
At this point I've accumulated enough rubber that I'm curious to try out some costume making with it. I am toying around with the idea of making some masks and perhaps a few paw pads and noses. Can folks point me to resources or other posts where people have used latex rubber to make fusuits? Additionally, once I can get going on using some of this rubber, I plan on following up with another post about it. Depending on the amount of interest I may see about giving away some of this rubber in exchange for fursuit stuff, but it will be on a matter of interest generated.
