Best head base for first fursuit?

$

Hi all,

I'm about to start on my first fursuit and I was wondering if it's way easier to work with a pre-made resin base or if I'd be better off starting with cutting foam. It seems to me like the resin base is more expensive, but easier to work with, but I'm not sure.

Any tips/tricks for the first head?

Thanks!

[Edit: I do have a degree in technical theatre so I have some experience working with fabric and silicone and other things of the sort.

Also even if the start-up cost for resin is higher, I'd feel better knowing it would last longer (if it would).

Also also, I'm interested in weight/breathability, is one better than the other in your opinion on these notes?

Thanks again!

Hard Foam Find

Howdy all, I was at my local Dollar Tree store when I found this foam in the summer section. It's the harder plasticy foam some people have mentioned recently - good for large erect ears, maybe hooves. its bendable, might be a little less quality than the usual blue stuff, but it seems perfect for the casual fursuit maker. I thought about picking up a sheet or two for a lightweight tail, myself.

DTD Question

Hello everyone, I am a first time fursuit maker and I have been asking my friends that have made suits before how they did their DTDs. I get the idea of how to make it and all but one of my friends told me to stuff it as soon as I can or it will fold in weird ways (I have yet to make my DTD). I'm a little strapped for cash so I can't exactly go out and buy a ton of stuffing and I have no newspapers. I was just wondering if there is any truth to what she said, and if there is I'll wait until I can buy enough stuffing. Also are there any cheap stuffings I could use? She told me poly fill would work just fine.

Buying fur

So I wanted to buy the orange long pile luxury shag from Fursuit Supplies. I'm not really sure how much I'll need but they're running out and my anxiety has been screaming in my ear to buy some of that and the grey I need before they run out, because if they do I'm screwed.
The gray I need: http://fursuitsupplies.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=35_52&product_id=50
The orange I need: http://fursuitsupplies.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=35_52&product_id=52
Any advice on this? I know I need enough orange to fur the majority of the head, and to make some of the pants (since I'm doing a quarter partial and making only the legs), and parts long-ish tail. I need the grey for the beak, hands, parts of the tail and the bottom parts of the legs and the feet
I hate to be all lazy and ask you guys, but I'm just freaking out, due to my limited time because of the musical I'm in and exams. I can post a front view of my 'sona if needed.
I hate to pester you guys on a matter I should be taking into my own hands, but I'm just kinda freaking out because I'm new at this, and it's like one of those moments where you're doing something and you're on a time crunch, and you're missing an important piece, and you just.. freak out.
Sorry to bother you guys, and I hope you can help.

Need Help Visualizing Psyduck Cosplay

I want to do a Psyduck cosplay, mascot-style. I found a photo of a fantastic Pikachu costume from ComiCon and that's the exact body style I'd like to create. I'm sure that getup is probably professionally-made, but I'd like to get as close as possible. I understand how leg padding and dropped-crotches work, but this costume would be like a giant eggplant with a duck head and feet. All I can find is tutorials on how to make the humanized Pokemon cosplays or kigurumi stuff. I don't want to look like I'm wearing a floppy skinned duck.

How would something like this be built, and with what materials? I thought about using hula hoops, but I'm worried it would end up looking like a giant ribbed condom. That Pikachu looks nice and solid. I tried looking through the memories, but I couldn't find anything quite like this. Other cosplay forums haven't been too helpful, giving answers like, "Use foam." Ha, thanksssss...

My problem is that I am a very visual person and I don't do well with wall-o-text instructions with no WIP photos. Even If I could get a shot of the inside of something like that Pikachu, I'd be in better shape. I just can't find anything.

Help finding an odd coloured marker?

I've been working on getting my supplies together for my first fursuit, I've commissioned the head base, have means of furring and shaving (no fur yet as I'm pretty strapped for cash at the moment), fur colours picked out, fleece found for pawpads and all those things but I'm having a bit of trouble fnding a decent quality marker in the colour I need.

The colour on the far right labeled 'eyes' is what I need, I can do with something a tad bit lighter or darker but I'd love for it to be as close as possible.

I'm not going after something amazingly expensive (like Copics), just something nice I could use for this and anything else I may need it for in the future.

(I'd also like a black marker by the same brand as. the one I'm looking for though it isn't necessary!)

Attaching a jawset

I was looking through the memories on mouths and couldn't find anything saying when to attach a jaw set. Is it best to attach it first and then fur around it, or is it better to fur then attach the jawset on top?

Searching for fur?

Hello everyone. :)
Im planning on my making my character Wreckage into a fursuit.
This gal here- http://www.furaffinity.net/view/12189120/
But im having troubles finding furs that match well with her shades of brown, and are the preferred pile length.
The furs id like to use would be 1/2. But would use 2" fur if need be.
But for the light brown, i was wondering if there is a 3" fur thats close in color to it so i can use the longer fur for the chest, tail, and hair poof.

Any help is appreciated!

Thank you for reading! ^^

Hello guys! Posting again. Hope that's fine. I didn't get any responses to my last entry so I just pushed my nose to the grind and started working on it some more.

DVC Hoof cloppers

For those of you who've gotten these (I'm referring specifically to her XL cloppers, but since they're all resin, I'd think it'd all be about the same), what kind of glue do you use to fill them with to attach them to your existing paws?

I'd guess you also need to be able to have your fingers in there with them, too, so hot glue wouldn't work (unless it was low temp), but I'm curious as to what everyone else seems to be doing with these. E-6000 seems like it would take forever to cure. Any ideas and anecdotes much appreciated!

Help Finding a Fur Color

Yes, it's another one of "those" post, eheh. But I'm just having the worst time finding some colors of fur! I have found some that might work, but I really would prefer other's input on them if they have used them. I'd also love some suggestions for colors that others have found. It's literally the only one I need to find. Also maybe suggestions on a fur that'll match the orange better if you know of any?

Color Sheet:

(DF black, DF orange, Mongolian grey)

Possible working colors:

http://www.bluemoonfabrics.com/store/p/162-Desert-Fox.aspx (Grey)

Really don'y want to use the last but I will if I have to.

All possible help would be greatly appreciated!

Ears

So I saw a tutorial where you use plastic mesh nuked up with foam for ears. I believe you add foam to the sides and back if the ear. Would this be a suitable method for a Boston Terrier? I ask because their ears seem pretty thin, and torn between them looking bulky or too flat. Any suggestions?

I saw these at Petsmart on sale and just had to snatch the last one off of the shelf. I've been wanting a higher quality clipper for a while and can't quite justify an A5 quite yet. Does anyone have these clippers and if yes what do you think of them? I know Andis is a good brand, but don't know much about this particular model itself. It has both the combs as well as the blades that can be switched out for different sizes. using short pile fur

For my fursuit I plan on using this really soft but very short pile fur. I think it's beaver fur...kind of like seal not sure ... but it's less than an inch pile I think. So, my first question is -- originally I was planning on sewing everything first then pulling the sewed pieces over the head and gluing in place. However, now I'm afraid no matter how neatly I sew there will still be visible seams. Would it be better just to trim so the edges match and then glue down everything? Opinion on whether or not simply gluing is a good way to go seems to vary, so wanted to hear thoughts/suggestions on this.

That's for the head.

I guess there isn't much I can do except sew neatly to make a bodysuit look nice right? ...because I plan on using the same pile of fur since I'm doing a short haired breed of dog for my suit and I really do LOVE this fur it's so silky.

I'm having trouble finding the right colors.

I want to build a partial fursuit but I can't seem to find the right colors at the right length. The colors are a bit of a grayscale of blues, and the sellers I have seen only have like 4 blues and that is all there is. The coat colors can be seen at this link.

I'm kinda look for 2"-3" fur, but if you think different would work better I am all ears as I am new to making fursuits.

Anyone know if there is a tutorial out there for making them? I know I'm getting a little ahead of myself here (I don't even have my bodysuit yet) but was just wondering. Also is it crazy to think I could somehow rig said harness with like a backpack? I envision my latest character having tons of props and I think it would be nice to have something to carry them in. Plus I think it would be cute. :) Any help on this would be great -- thanks guys!

Ears

I have ears separate from my fursuit for when I'm not wearing my head (like at a rave) but they aren't attached to anything I was wondering what you would suggest attaching them to so I am able to wear them and my hair will hide whatever they're attached to. If you need pictures to understand what I'm talking about I'd be happy to!
