Bird head WIPS seeking critique 3rd time

And hopefully it will be the last time. orz

Anyway, here I am again. I won't be getting fur for a while, but I still wanted to make sure I had these heads closer to done since they've been sitting here since January doing pretty much nothing but taking up space on the table ehehe. I've done some more shaping and adjusting since last time I posted, and I wanted to get tips again just to make sure they're at least close to fur-worthy.

As always, I'll start with the puffin. I had the awesome opportunity to go down to my local aquarium and take literally 100 pictures of the tufted puffins there. Upon doing so, I noticed that my beak was way too wide, so trimming that down was the main adjustment I made. I also trimmed down the cheeks and added a bit more neck padding so I think I like the shape of the head now.

Upon taking pictures of the mask itself I noticed the smile was way crooked, so that's already been fixed ehehe. |D

I think I'm still going to trim a bit of the front of the face, though, because I also noticed that I could at least see a little bit of the aquarium puffins' eyes from the front. Speaking of eyes, I got some awesome ones from the help you guys gave me last time, so thanks a lot.~

And now for the owl again. I determined that one of my problems was that the face disk didn't go down quite as far as I had hoped, so I went ahead and made it a little taller. I might trim it a little more, though, since it looks a bit distorted, but only from the front... is that a good idea? Other than that I think I did pretty well... right? Still not entirely confident here because I've never worked drawings or anything with owls before. I think it's cute though.

soooo yeah that's it ehehe.

Dragon Arm WIP, looking for critique and advice on fabric.

Hi there!

So in an unfortunate accident involving a Nazgul and a ritual my LARP character lost her left arm at my last major event, so I've made my next hobby project crafting her a new, monstrous arm with which to cast elemental magics, and settled on 'draconic' as a theme.

http://imgur.com/n0Nv2vt
http://imgur.com/0HrQZrB

I'm currently sculpting out the foam padding on the hand around a glove, and the sleeve of an old top. Some of the claws have been installed and I am working on refining the whole thing. It looks somewhat...off to me though so some advice on what I might cut/add would be enormously appreciated. I was going for a sort of vaguely 'avian' effect with the shape.

Along with that I'm currently puzzling over materials for the outer part. I don't want a furry effect, but rather skin/extremely short fur and large scales. I was considering stretch velvet with some scales made from worbla but I've not worked with either so I may be barking up the wrong tree there.

What I am looking for effect-wise is something that will leave the foam muscles and knuckles and such with their intergrity still, rather than lost under something thick, and then a way to add chunky, non-uniform scales that lie flat against the arm. As it is a LARP item and the event is combat-orientated I can't have anything sharp or extremely solid sticking up. Foam, latex, and such is entirely fire to stick out away from the limb however.

Any ideas would be brilliant.

Question on Determining Faux Fur Quality

I'm going to the Dongdaemun crafts market in Seoul.  To give you an idea of what it's like, think of a craft store (like JoAnn, Michaels, or a local craft store).  Remove all the crafts that don't relate to textiles/clothing projects.  Merge that with Costco's wholesale and warehouse aspects.  Then merge that with a street fair's multitudes of different vendors.  Put that in a 7 story (plus one basement) building the size of a city block.  The aisles should be about 1m or less in width for most of the building.  Organize the floors by what is being sold (yarns and threads, fabrics, buttons, etc) and then group vendors with similar wares together on the appropriate floors.

There is some faux fur in this market and I'll be going back to check the prices against what I could buy in the US.  I'm told that bargaining is expected there, so I might be able to get some really good deals.  But I want to make sure that it's a decent quality before I buy it.  So is there any way to tell the quality of faux fur by looking it over and/or feeling it?

And I do know the Korean word for faux fur (it's 인조모피 'injomopi'), so I'll be able to verify that what I buy isn't real fur. ^^

YubNub Ewok Update

This is the latest state of YubNub, the Ewok. THe ventilation with the thick fleece sealed around my neck, is GREAT and I don't get HOT and we have no air conditioner! Well, it was at night so it was much cooler in the house, buuut not by much.

The fur is just pinned on for now, I'm going to find the right thread I need and start sewing the fur pieces together, make the true hood.

I want to accent her as a "She" Ewok so, by a patterning mistake, I cut the shape out the wrong way and put it on. You know, I liked the non-traditional look and it was kinda like a personal touch that set me apart from the other Ewoks and it seems feminine a bit. I should be able to bypass any pickiness by the judges by concealing the hood around the face more.DSCF1554

A Little Help with a Cooling Fan?

Hello, everyone!
I did check the Memories for fans and didn't find my answer (see? diligent!), so I'm posting a pic to see if/who can help.
Here is the fan I'd like to use, because of size, price, and noise generated:
fan
as you can see, there are red, yellow, black wires, instead of just red and black.
My question is: how do I wire it to a toggle switch and battery connector? (Ala Matrices?)

Questions that occurred to me: what size fan(s)? does one need? (e.g. 80, 90, 120, 140mm.) How does voltage affect/require what batteries you use? (9v vs AA, for example.)

Alternatives to resin for a fursuit head?

I really like the idea of a lightweight hollow head, so that a fan could be placed in the snout, and it can have finer, sharper details. I've seen videos and tutorials of people using resin heads, but I don't have access to the facilities required for casting. I was just wondering if anyone knew of a material that is solid and sturdy, that's thinner than the commonly used upholstery foam, that I could use instead of resin. I was thinking of something like a carve-able hard foam, or some kind of sculpting compound? I do have some Milliput, which is a 2 part sculpting putty, but it's very expensive.

Round-shaped heads & Fleece for hair?

Hiya all!
This group has been indispensable for looking up just about any info I've ever needed to know! Helped a lot with my first good head. I really delved through the pages looking for help on these two things though and didn't really find anything at all. (I may be missing something of course, so feel free to correct me! But I really took a lot of time searching!)

I have plans to make a fursuit partial for the character "Babs Seed" from My Little Pony/ Friendship is magic.

They have really really round heads, and I found instantly that I have no idea how to start one at all. Any advice would be amazing! Or wip shots or something to help. I'm at a total loss of how to even begin.

Also, hair! I see a lot of people mention all types of ways to use wigs and things, but what about for cartoony characters? I thought babs had flat colorful hair so maybe Fleece? Has anyone used it before, or is it a good idea at all?

Please help if you can! ;^;

How much difference does a fan make?

I'm just curious. If a fan is placed in the muzzle, how much of a difference does it make compared to not having a fan at all?

Looking for one short muzzled character to create. Discounted!!

Wanna take one very discounted, all foam, toony head for end of year completion.
Thinking 300$ for the head, (plus more for special cases like custom dye or extensive markings) which means savings of 200$~.

Would need to be a shorter muzzled character. Throw them at me! Please email references to me at spacecatcreations@gmail.com

http://www.furaffinity.net/user/poprockgrey/

I have a few requests right now, but I would like more so I can pick what would help develop my style and abilities with shorter muzzles. That means this is not first come, first served! I *may* offer this a few more times later on to develop a consistent style!

Faux Fur Quality Check--Am I Doing It Right?

First of all, thank you to those who gave me advice on how to check the quality of faux fur!

So I went to the Dongdaemun crafts market again today and had a lot of fun (went into the basement and discovered they had shelves upon shelves of large spools of thread, I'm guessing for industrial sewing machines, which was really exciting!), though I'm not sure if I did a good job at it.  Which is why I filmed myself looking at two of the multitudes of faux fur samples that I examined today: http://youtu.be/vmekL0RZOs0

I realize that you probably can't help me determine the quality of the two samples I looked at, but you probably can tell me if I'm checking the quality right (or if I misunderstood the excellent advice and was doing everything all wrong).

And as I'm rather new to working with faux fur (I've worked with other fabrics, though, and even made a dress for my wife with the help of the seamstress mother of a coworker of my father), I'm not entirely sure what the thickness of the backing is supposed to be (and how thin is too thin), or how easy to see the backing is too easy, or if a few strands coming loose when I pet it firmly is bad or admissible.

So thanks for putting up with my questions and I appreciate the help you have been giving me!

Softening Question

Alright, so my friend had commissioned me to make bunny ears and a cat tail for a cosplay as 'Mew Berry', knowing that I make fursuits and everything. So far, the ears came out ok (the first time making rabbit ears).

I'm on to working on the tail. With my budget, time, and area, there has been no decent quality white fur around. Craft fur is better than what other furs have been available, so I'm stuck with that. So my problem is, is that the backing of the fur is stiff, and doesn't get the right 'sway' for a tail.

So how can I soften it? I've tried searching places, but they keep telling me to put the stiff material in a dryer, and I know that's a big no no. Any suggestions?

fleece arm sleeves for a partial? ( and fleece questions)

$

How would you make FLEECE arm sleeves for a partial to stay up? I was thinking about making a partial with very rounded large hand paws, like this:
basically, The hand paws wont have any "fingers" that i will be able to move, just foam "toes". And I want arm sleeves, but how can they stay up if I dont want to sew them onto a shirt? (sorry my description makes no sense)
Where is a good place to buy fleece? And what is the easiest way to get it smoothed out? I've seen lots of people do it, but I don't understand how.

Shaving tips for a n00b and digitigrade shoes?

Another long-time lurker joining LJ!

I bought my first pair of clippers wed. and shaved my first head last night...needless to say, my shave job is pretty rough... If any of you experienced makers out there have some tips on getting a smooth, even shave, I'd be quite grateful! My clippers are a cheapie pair from target, Wahl brand. I used the two shorter guards and the straight blade last.

I also whacked the heels off a pair of stillettos (clearance ftw!) and was planning on making digitigrade paws with them, basically just raising them up a bit and furring them. They're a pain to wear though and I want to improve that...perhaps adding elastic on the legs ala gryphern's werewolf stilts? If anyone wants to try redlining 'em they're welcome to it.

Hey guys! :D I just felt the need to let everyone know about something I discovered today! I work at Michaels, and I noticed that we now carry E6000, every fursuiter's saving grace, in little bitty tubes!

These little baby sizes are PERFECT for taking with you to a con or event in case something were to fall off of your suit and you needed to do some overnight repairs in your hotel room! :3 I know how hard it is to keep the larger tubes of glue usable and clean. Hahaha.

I'm going to be making some pawpad molds and was curious as to which substance would be better?

Also with plaster molds I've heard mixed reviews and people saying they break super easy..do they?

Hand Sewn or Machine?

Ive been wondering this for a while. Ive seen many mixed reviews on people who hand sew their head markings vs machine sewing. I would like to know what you would recommend. I personally would think that hand sewing would be better even though it would take longer. Thanks for all your help

Aussie Shep nose revamp

Sorry I don't have a better picture... Our camera battery charger is missing.  :<

Buuut here is a pic of my boyfriend's aussie shep head with a larger / re-done nose.  HUGE thanks to matrices and everyone else who offered their advice and critiques!  I think he looks MUCH better now!  You can't tell in the pic but I also tore off some of the white on the side of his muzzle and replaced it.  It had been shaved a little too far down in some places, and you could actually see a bit of the green foam peeking through in the right lighting.
