Darts

Hey guys,

I've been working on my Haku costume for AX, and haven't really been getting close to what I want with the head :/ I've done two full "drafts" of the head with two different from-scratch patterns, and neither look even remotely good when I put them on the reinforced baseball cap I'm using as a base.

Then I realized that I'm an idiot and I should have made a tape pattern of the baseball cap in the first place!

So, with the help of Matrices' amazing tutorials (THANK YOU) and the Memories/tagged entries here, I managed to make the world's ugliest tape pattern (I learned a lesson - never use whatever random, off-brand duct tape you find in the garage). I also stuck on a piece of Mystery Foam Padding that I found in my closet so I'd have some structure for the muzzle area when I made the pattern.

My question is about darts and flattening out the tape pattern. I've never really used darts before, and I'm still a bit unfamiliar with their magic. When flattening out the pattern, should I use a bunch of small darts, or just a few larger ones? Where should I put the darts? Should I cut the darts out of the tape itself to make the pattern piece lay flat?

((Note: This is more of a costume than a fursuit, and the head is going to be built onto a baseball cap that will just sit on my head. The head is more of a plushie than a mask, so that's why it's super-simple in shape, and I don't need eyeholes.))

Here's one side of the pattern. This shows the area where it curves around in front of the nose/muzzle area.

Here's the head top gusset. I really don't know where to put darts - a few of them along the curved sides? :/

A full view of the pattern piece for the side of the head.

And here's a closeup of the curve of the muzzle area seen in the first pic - I drew a "test dart" onto there - is that correct? Should it be narrower?

I'm also making a tail that will have a flexible-foam taxidermy form as its base - should I use darts on that pattern as well so the fur part of the tail can curve into different shapes when I bend/curve the taxidermy form, so the fur won't look so lumpy? :/

Thank you for any help/advice :}

looking for a cream colored fur

I'm wanting a nice creamy color fur for a suit I'll be doing. I don't really want a super long pile as it is for a short haired cat and I'm not really finding anything that isn't either too white or too yellow. I guess if it comes down to it I can make a longer pile fur work.
These are examples of the color I'm looking for, so if anyone knows what brand and color name they are it would be much appreciated!:

Shaving elastic'd fur

As an entry-level project to costuming, I've been working at a faun costume for general use (how original, I know), just to dip my toes into the whole sewing, furring, costuming thing. I have completed the hoof stilts (pictures later, promise!), have made a duct tape stencil of the legs, and have already ordered the fur. As someone who is rather thin, I think it would be in my best interest to shave the anatomical details into the fur, rather than pad, so I purchased 2 yards of camel DF long fur, and 1 of ivory, the 2" pile sort. The stencil I made allots for ample movement in the joint areas, so without elastic, it would be too baggy looking. I intend to use this tutorial to elasticize the joint area.

Question!

Should I shave the fur before, or after adding the elastic? I'm afraid of shaving first, and having a wrinkly ankle, and of shaving after, and having uneven fur or cut elastic threads. I intend to use an electric razor to thin the fur to a minimum of 1/2" in places, but the elastic areas should be at least 1" pile, give or take. If I can't find an affordable electric razor, I'll be using scissors, I suppose. :B

Binturong Foamwork

Hello fellow fursuit makers! I've got some foamwork for a new head I am working on to share today. My boyfriend has a new silly character and we decided to make it into a fursuit so we can play around with making something different. As well as practicing changing body shape and working with different styles/areas of body padding.

Binturong

This will become a Binturong! What is a Binturong? They're like.... Really cute weird-shaped animals.

Here's the sort of ref I drew up http://www.furaffinity.net/view/9567025/ but since we're still getting fur sample swatches in its very likely we will change the fur colors some. But it will generally be as binturong-shaped as possible.

Here it is being worn, before (left) I changed the ears, and (right) after I lowered the ears and trimmed them some more.

While the fur hasn't been picked out yet as we're waiting on swatches to arrive.
I do plan to incorporate a dropped crotch with some leg and possibly arm padding. Although the tail on the real animal is supposed to be huge and prehensile I am likely going to go with a more practically sized tail (sorry, lol). We're also gunna go with small vinyl-palmed padded handpaws to match the weird leathery paw-shape http://farm7.staticflickr.com/6058/6308937238_6def25cda6.jpg and small footpaws with vinyl paw-bottoms. http://farm1.staticflickr.com/39/110397355_1e447e6ad7_z.jpg?zz=1 The nose (the one you see in photos is a temp nose) will be made of lycra-covered foam, so its big and round and squishy, I plan to use needlesculpting to shape the unique nostril-shape.

I'm always up for a good critique! Any chance to improve upon what I do is welcome.

after taking these photos I immediately saw some changes I could make to the cheek symmetry, so that's fixed now. My goal in my fursuits is to match my drawing style while still being faithful to the animal. While all of my stuff I make IS toony, I DO strive for realistic merits to the designs, so definitely let me know if something's off.

So admitibly I have been debating about changing my 'sona to that of a marbled polecat as I just love the little sons-of-a-guns so much. Regardless, I want this critter to be my very first full suit.

Now the fur on the back, I might be crazy but I swear I remember seeing a fur with that exact style of patterning-big blotching brown spots on beige fabric. Please tell me I'm not crazy, I've been looking everywhere! Any ideas? Thanks!

Fursuit question

I'm not sure if this fits here but technically most of the costume is fur so here we go. For a while now i've been really puzzled on how to pull this costume off.

I was wanting some opinions on it since I was wondering if it would need a custom head made for it which i've seen people do short faced fursuit heads before. The reason is i've considered getting a body suit made and I wanted every thing to match perfectly

Character under the cut.

I was wondering since the character in question is covered completely and fur and if a head is the case would it even look right ? Or is prosthetics just needed.

Edit: incase the bottom picture broke http://www.furaffinity.net/view/9769250/

Edit 2: The Lj Cut broke completely, Also i'm kind of leaning toward prostetics but I still need some good opinions on this since I do kind of want to get a bodysuit for it still.

Blinking LEDs

Okay, so a friend and I are going to be working on a new fursuit project for her car/dragon hybrid character.  He's going to have silicone LED eyes that are to represent high beams, and yellowish "eyelids" below the silicone eyes that are his "turn signals".  They are supposed to blink periodically, like real turn signals on a car.  Only problem is, we both have ZERO experience in wiring LEDs or any type of electronicy hardwarey... stuff.

If it were possible, we would like to have the lights on a switch... flipping the switch to a "middle" position would cause them to flash like emergency lights.  Flipping them forward would create alternating flashes, or three timed flashes on both sides.

I would like to either commission someone to make the LED set up for me, or find online resources to teach us how to do it ourselves.  Any and all tips  or ideas are welcome!

( I'd like to pick Beetlecat's brain about this since I know she used a similar set-up on her light-up unicorn horn.  :3 )

A bunch of questions..

So I have a lot of questions and I'm going to try and make this my last post to the community for a while. But we'll see.

My first question is about DTDs. I know that they're used as sort of dress forms to use to hold the suit and everything, but my friends all do different things. Instead of stuffing it, they draw the pattern on it and then cut the dummy up. Personally, that makes more sense to me, but what other ways do people use their dummies? I need as many suggestions as possible, so that I can learn. Thank you!

Question number two. Yarn tails. I love to make yarn tails. One of my friends suggested I commissioned them. I know it's hard for you guys to price things without pictures, but does anyone have any idea at all how to price them?

Silicone vs Fleece paw pads. I'm going for toony, but I feel like fleece pawpads would break really easy, would pill, and would make it harder to grip things (the suit only has four fingers to begin with) where as silicone would be much more realistic, but better to grip things with. Can you make toony pawpads with silicone?

Zippers. Lots of things about zippers. I want a back zipper--I know it means I can't suit alone because I won't be able to get out by myself. I wasn't planning on suiting alone anyways. Plastic or metal? I feel metal would be more heavy duty, but would it rip out fur? Would plastic be too flimsy? What's a good length? How do I hide it? I've looked up invisible zippers but I don't understand.

Thanks. c:

Help with facial expression....

Hey, all. It's been a while since I've visited here... but I've got a new fursuit project ahead of me. This one is a lot more personal than my last suit, and I really want to do the best that I can on it. It's for my fursona, Riffti.

Since, when the suit is complete, she'll wield a giant, dragon skulled scythe... I don't want to give her the generic happy smiling face that most suits have... since that miiiiiight make her look a little psychotic. And the already creepy dead-eyed stare would be even worse....

I'm looking for something along the lines of a sarcastic looking smirk, or something similar to that. Almost cocky looking, that shows her pride in her weapon of choice (sort of like a 'What, you really think you can take me on? Ha!' look) but would still look good without the weapon, too.

Soooo.... does anyone have some good reference pictures I can go off of that would portray this sort of look?

Bigger version of my display pic can be found at:

Thanks in advance

Clouded leopard fur?

I recently got a large feline blank from Beetlecat, and i'd like to turn it into a clouded leopard. However im not sure what kind of fur i should get for it. I have black, and white so no worries there, but what colors should i get for the brownish gold? Im looking for something short in pile, anyone have any good recommendations? I plan to have it airbrushed as well, if that helps. :)

Problem is being dealt with--Thanks for the advice!

Okay, so I have a commission due in March for a fullsuit. The DTD arrived, and after stuffing up most of it, I realized that it looks like the legs are pretty darn short. Measuring it, I'm getting a 22-23" inseam. I contacted the commissioner about their measurements, and apparently they have a 31" inseam. So, we've got a problem.

Now, there are a few issues I'm running into. This person is on the larger side, and I've never worked on a bodysuit for someone this size before. I know that people who are larger, their stomachs tend to, let's just say "get in the way" sometimes. I don't want to adjust this guy's bodysuit to match his inseam and have the legs be too long, or have the crotch of it be too tight, and wind up cutting into his stomach if it hangs lower, you know? I don't really have any way of knowing if this bodysuit is accurate to his actual body shape, or if he made a mistake when making the DTD. So I'm really not sure what to do, here.

Should I adjust the inseam length to where it should be and hope it fits?
Should I assume the DTD is correct and go with it? (Because if a person is much larger, wouldn't their stomach kind of cause a sort of... lowered crotch if it was large enough?)
Has anyone worked on a bodysuit for a much larger person, who might have some advice about this?

I'd ask the commissioner to remake the DTD, but it needs to be done in two weeks, and he's already had to send it out twice (it got damaged and sent back to him the first time around).

((I just want to go ahead and apologize if for any reason anyone gets offended by this. I understand that weight and size are sensitive issues, so please know that there are no judgments here!))

[[EDIT: I've talked to the commissioner and the DTD was made incorrectly. At least I know I'm not going crazy. :) We'll deal with the issue and fix the problem. Thanks for the advice given!]]

Attaching footpaws to digitigrade legs

I'm trying to figure out how to best attach footpaws to a digitigrade legs. I've looked through the memories, but it's rather confusing/frustrating since it's not really separated out into hand paws and footpaws...
From what I've gathered so far, you have the paw cover most of the front of the foot, with an angled bit going partway up your shin, and you try and hide the heel with some feathering of fur, but what bits should be attached to the pants part, and what bits to the shoe part?

Anyway, does anyone have any suggestions/tips or links to good tutorials on how to do this? Thanks!

Strong adhesive available in the EU?

I'm hoping a fursuit maker in the EU can help me. A customer in The Netherlands wants to make a repair on his feetpaws, and asked for a glue recommendation. I suggested Barge if he can find it, but I have no idea if it's easily available internationally. In case he can't find it, can anyone recommend something he'd be more likely to find? I'm looking for something to reattach the shoe to the fatigue mat midsole. I had used contact cement and it came loose, so I need something pretty strong.

Clipper opinions?

Now that I got the fur situation straightened out, I'm trying to decide on a pair of clipper between these choices:

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Wahl-Pro-Series-Complete-Pet-Clipper-Kit-Corded-or-Cordless-Operation-Dogs/11035700?findingMethod=rr
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Wahl-Pet-Pro-Complete-Pet-Clipper-Kit-Dogs/11035640
http://www.amazon.com/Andis-60105-12-Piece-Easy-Grooming/dp/B001K90KT6

I'm on a bit of a budget, so those are all around the price range I'm looking for. I've heard good and bad things about them all so I wanted to get some opinions, although I'm leaning towards the Andis pair because they allow for replacement blades.

I only need about half a yard of df dark brown. I am willing to buy or trade with fur I currently have, or willing to do a large badge commission for it! My FA is http://www.furaffinity.net/user/hollyfaye/ for examples of my work.

Fur I have available for trade is
-extra long df brown
- extra long df purple
-extra long df turquoise
-df hot pink
-df white
-df turquoise

If you have half a yard or more and are not interested in the above please give me an idea on what you would want for it and how much shipping would be to 70070. Thanks!

Looking for Furs...

Last ditch attempt, here. Does anyone have any furs they'd be willing to sell us that would match the main and secondary body colors of this character? http://www.furaffinity.net/view/2312573/

I'm already familiar with DF, CR's, and I'm Stuffed furs. If worse comes to worse, we'll be using CR's Honey for the main color, so an off-white of a similar texture would suffice for the belly, if anyone has something like that. I'd need about 3-4 yards of the main and one yard of the belly color. Thanks for any help. :)

Curse this jaw!

Howdy folks! I'm currently wrking on a fursuit head that is meant to feature a moving jaw, prior to the attachment of the cheeks the jaw moved beautifully and now it barely moves at all. I have this suspicion that it eithers has to do with the foam being glued to the elastic, or the fact that the cheeks might be a wee bit too big for the head. It might even be a combination of both or more issues than I previously thought.

photo (1)
photo

I'd love any opinions on how I can go about fixing this issue. If it involves removing the cheeks then I suppose i'll have to keep it a static jaw as I'm not too fond of having to destory the entire base of the head over two cheeks. I'm also curious as to if there's anything I can do to hide my mouth from view. Again, opinions are AWESOME.

I know that the DF style gray went through a lighter dye lot. Is the predominant dye lot on the market still light or is it darker again?

Awkward bunching in the crotch.

Basically, I wish to fix this, but I'm unsure of how to do so without leaving too much of an ugly awkward seam in the crotch. 'specially since it's short, super seal fur. :X

Any pointers would be appreciated, thank ye!   The problem results from me kind of trying to extend the crotch pattern a little in an effort to give some room when bending, jumping or general movement, really.
