Sewing machine issues

Was hoping someone might be able to give me a bit of advice on a matter I've been struggling with recently

I own a Janome HD1000 and this thing is a powerhouse. I've been able to sew through fur with no issue for quite some time. I'd been working on a bodysuit recently, gotten almost finished when a needle broke. No worries, I changed it and decided to take some time to clean the fibers out of the machine, which involved inscrewing the top panel.

Got everything put back into place and proceeded to break 5 needles in the span of 15 minutes

I got a new pack of heavy duty ones, and when I finally got the needles to stop breaking, the machine started skipping stitches. I can't figure out how it's doing this, but I've messed with the tension, the different stitches and a bunch of other things, with no luck. It's working just fine with regular cotten fabrics, but if I try anything thicker, if flips out and skips a bunch of stitches

Does anyone by any chance know what might be wrong with it?

Gluing

Hey,ive ust finished my first fursuit but i came across a problem when trying to make the feet. When gluing the glue would just be be sucked into the foam and the foam would stick but very poorly and only if i where to use alot of glue. Is there a certain type of glue (i currently use usual hot glue) i use or is it the foam thats the problem?
Luckly when making my fursuit head it was resin so i wasnt a problem but now i want to make a foam base but as you can see im unable to.
If anyone is able to answer me, it would be very appreciated. c:

What model of sewing machine do you use, and how do you like it?

So I'm in the market for a new sewing machine, and I'm looking to spend between $400 and $600 (preferrably towards the lower end :P). I tend to sew a lot of wacky projects (6 layers of canvas for one thing, and 8 layers of felt for another) in addition to fur, fleece, vinyl, and all the other things we use. I don't need fancy stiches, but I do need durability, reliability, and preferably ease of maintinence. I've sewn on everything from a $2000 Bernina to a $40 Singer, so I can really appreciate the benefits of a decent machine :3

I'll be going into a sewing machine store (a dedicated shop, not Michaels or Joannes) to check out machines with some scraps of material. However, I'd like to get some info from the community first so I'll be a bit more familair with what they show me. Without further ado, here are my questions:

1. What machine do you have and how much did you pay? How do you like it?
2. Are there any features on it that you love? Features you don't use that much?
3. Is my budget high enough for what I'm looking to buy?

Thanks guys :D

Tentacle arms? / Holding up fabric?

So I wanted to make a fursuit based on this character ( Still working on the colors )

and I needed to know how I would be able to do something like tentacle arms? Would it even look right? I don't think I've seen it before. Also, would there be anything I could do to make the arms semi functionable? Like to pick things up and such? I was thinking about adding a little slot for my thub but i dont think that would make a difference...
Also, or the ears I wanted to make them out of fleece, so they are very light, but I don't want them to drag around. I want them to be somewhat stiff when I'm moving. How would I go about that?

Flex Seal on horns?

I am looking to make a balaclava based goat fursuit head. Of goats have horns. I'm thinking I want to go ahead and make larger curled horns, using pool noodles and paper mache. (It sounds off but I have made horns using this method before, and they worked well to put on a headband. Problem was, they absorbed moisture, so I'm looking for a cheap product to waterproof my horns. Would clear flex seal work? Or should I try something different? I can't afford something very expensive so I prefer under $15. Thanks in advance! :3

Fursuit foam head teeth help

So I've made foam heads before and normally I only do the bottom row of teeth and make them out of sculpy and seal them and such.
Well for the personal project that I'm doing now requires me to have both a top and lower teeth.
I originally planned to use resin and start casting teeth from that but because I'm low on funds I'm having to switch to something else.
I'm picking between white fleece, apoxie sculpt, faux leather, or normal scuply clay.
The character I'm making is my main sona Jaaku who has a skull for a face so I need to have the upper teeth and fangs for his head.
Any help would be appreciated.

Kemono Eyes: Type of paper / printed material for the anime colored printed eyes?

$

This is a question I dont need answered right away, but I like ideas and this information is very important.

For kemono eyes (the iris being printed graphics applied to dark grey vinyl for the pupil) - does anyone know a specific paper or material that works well for the colored/printed iris part? Something higher quality for great prints and still durable?

UPS has a huge book of paper types, plastic paper, even fabrics. I can see how the quality is in general with them, the thing I can't tell is exactly how they hold up in a head especially with the heat/sweat and movement a moving-jaw foam head.

I asked them myself, but they didn't have any suggestions for me. Tutorials sometimes say "sticker paper" but I would think some American sticker paper brands would peel off from the heat coming from inside of the head, AKA the glue having bad effects on the paper and as an adhesive.

I think i'm not the only one researching this type of kemono eye project, so I hope this helps others as well, please tag/link this to people so there's answers to help everyone here. Kemono eyes aren't exactly common in fursuit making.

fur question

I'm wondering...(I've searched on Google with no luck really) does glow in the dark faux fur exist? If so WHERE can I get some? Or if not glow in the dark...does anyone know where I can get faux fur that is at least -colored- like the glowy stick on the wall stars? Preferably I'd like to get a glow in the dark fur, but if I can at least get a fur close to that color, that'd be an acceptable alternative. :)

Radywolf has made a chibi fursuit head where the moving jaw doesn't have any noticeable seams. Anyone have any idea of how they may have done this? (Just for curuiosity's sake)

Fans + Balaclavas

Hello! So, I'm going to start building my very first head soon, and I've got almost everything figured out except the ventilation system. I'm using a resin blank (from DVC) and a balaclava.

I'll be putting a 1" fan in the muzzle of the head to bring in fresh air, but since I run really hot I want to put a smaller fan in each ear as well. This is where the issue starts. How am I supposed to hide the fans under the fur if they're just big squares on my head? won't the shapes stick out and make it super obvious I've got two fans in my ears? if that doesn't happen, how do I prevent my hair from getting sucked into the fan? wouldn't it be laying right against my head? and if it is laying against my head, how is it supposed to get air in if the intake isn't clear?

I'm very confused.

Ferret/Weasel and Feline Paw Outlines: Critique at all?

I would LOVE any critique at all for these toony pawpad outlines! If any can be given, that'd be great!
IMG_2827.JPG

Style: Toony. I like to keep with simple yet detailed enough to show as close as possible to the creature.
Finger pads shown are not exactly the size/shape but just a reference.
Plans: Making more paw pad molds- two characters of mine and future suits. Done this already here:

But i'm thinking my canine paw pad shapes are very very very similar the the feline shape in general to start with, and unsure on weasel shapes because I never worked with them before X3 I want to keep those basic, but the feline shapes I want to appear more cat-like if possible if adding a 3-d puffy/squishy effect to those won't be enough.

What's a good solid, sturdy fabric?

For a small project I'm going to be sewing the claws and nose out of fabric. Fleece is a bit too flimsy, and I've seen people use a solid fabric with a bit of a sheen for similar jobs. It looks like it could be vinyl, which is what I'm hoping for, but I don't know of a good repository for it.

Preferably, I'd like it in either a hot pink or red, and be flexible enough to be turned inside-out without too much trouble. And most importantly be durable enough to be used for claws and a nose. Any ideas?

I've been making a partial Satyr/faun for both halloween contests and going to various cons in the area, and I'm really close to having it done! I have some pictures of the process and a few videos of movement and whatnot. Below the cut are a few (the rest can be seen on my FA at http://www.furaffinity.net/user/masumetakeda/ )

To go with it I have a faux Kitsune pelt to wear hanging from my shoulders

Once I'm done with it I'll update this post with full body and makeup video ^_^

Resin casting questions - The Second Coming

$

Hey all; after a week of panicked mass creation just before Anthrocon back in July, I managed to get my sculpt not only completed but a mold made as well. Night before AC 2015 I was frantically mixed and poured two sample pot sets worth of resin into my mold and made a pretty decent cast. However, at around 4 in the morning I realized that while following qarrezel's tutorial I didn't know how many layers of resin I was supposed to do. I didn't use URE-Fill III in my mix because I didn't have it. I was told by a friend that without the filler just 3-4 layers wasn't going to be enough structure to make sure the mask was properly sturdy. He told me I should use around 10-12 layers without filler. I've decided that my initial cast is definitely too fragile around the edges, as the back edge is close to the thickness of a couple of sheets of paper.

So my question is. How much resin is generally used in a casting, and which type do you find stronger/more preferrable? I'm debating between Smooth-On's Smooth-Cast 300 and Smooth-Cast ONYX. If I go with the Smooth-Cast ONYX, is it necessary to also use filler since it's got a harder wall thickness? I'm guessing the inside of the mask should be black so light coming in through the eyes doesn't reflect off one's face and make them visible. However black holds in a lot of heat and might make furring look weird. Any advice?

Here's the resulting resin base.

How do you make the fur lie so flat, and blend so well to the black base around say, the nose area? On some blanks I have seen, the nose is raised slightly so it's more levelled out with the height the fur adds, but it's not like that on these examples. And as for the blending, I just don't understand, how do you get it to look so natural / for the backing to not show at all?

I made a Telegram chat room for those who like to share their WIPs for sewing/making/furry crafts/fursuit work and stay inspired. Sometimes the best thing to get motivated is other crafty and creative people also working on their cool things!

For the most part this chat is focused on fursuit/furry crafts but other projects are welcome too. Professional makers & hobbyists are both welcome!

Invite link: https://telegram.me/joinchat/By7oEQEU0tkYlMwG5WcKyw

Please keep it SFW (since for a lot of us this IS our work!)
Please stay relatively on-topic (don't worry a little bit of off topic is fine)
Feel free to join/leave or invite other crafty friends at any time :D

Edit: We're up to around 80 members now and lots of activity!

Some tips I have to offer :D
After you join there will be a "shared media" portion of the community profile showing media that was shown during your time in the chat, you can easily look back on WIP pics, Ref images, and other images that were posted during your time watching the group, as well as "shared links" which may have some good links to supplies or guides, for example!
You can also search for messages, those in the group who have posted WIP pics in the past don't mind their projects being brought up again even if posted a bit ago, be sure to ping them use @username that way if they have the chat muted it will be able to alert them of your compliment/comment/etc. And long-press or right click > reply so it shows the context of your mention.
If you mute the chat notifications, that's totally understandable! If you want the chat notification number to not show in your taskbar, navigate to your telegram profile and uncheck "include muted chats in unread count" its totally fine to drop in whenever, there's makers from US and Europe so far, so there is activity throughout the day :D
