Cleaning mold

I just wanted know after spraying melaleuca oil (tea tree oil) on your fursuit head does it kill mold? Is it safe to wear your suit's head after it's been sprayed with melaleuca oil and dried off or do you wash it before wearing it
My suit's head isn't lined with balaclava it's just a full foam head although I wear a balaclava whenever I wear my suit
My fursuit head doesn't have mold I just want to know in case mold grows on my fursuit head.
Thanks in advance for Answering this I couldn't find an answer in Google about this lol

Fur direction... stylized?

Hi guys! It's been a while.

Anyway, sometime in the future I really want to make a fursuit/cosplay of Senkro from the Spectrobes video game series. Since I'm not planning anything really solid yet, I just had a quick question about the fur (or in this case, feather) direction on the legs. (I'm still going to call it fur, just for simplicity.)

Senkro

According to Senkro's design, the black fur on the upper legs points upwards, towards the waist, whereas a more realistic animal would have fur flowing down the legs. The fur on the lower legs, however, maintains the more realistic downwards direction, apart from the spiky ankles.

So for this fursuit, I was originally planning just to make all of the fur flow downwards. However, I was also considering following the original design, and have it flow upwards above the knee and downwards below the knee - perhaps beginning from a point on the back of the leg. But my question is... would this even look good? The spiky fur would look funny with the fur flowing the wrong direction, but I was also concerned that the knee would look funny because fur is pointing in two different directions above and below it.

Bone tail suggestions?

I am trying to make a gory partial based off a miss monster resin skull mask. It's fairly graphic in design (and will be a little graphic as far as gore level goes) and I am trying to come up with ways to make a boney tail with a scraggly puff at the end. I could sculpt the bones out of something hard, sew them, or cute foam and add fabric over it... I am not sure if it would be more interesting to have bare bones showing, or have some hard bones shapes under mummified looking skin/gore with a little exposed bone. I am thinking since the mask is a hard material I ought to have at least some of the tail be something sculpted out of plastic or apoxie sculpt. Has anyone made skeletal or zombie suits that knows what materials were used?

So a customer has a suit with "sprinkles" in the long white fur around the neck, arms, and legs. How to tackle the sprinkles has been quite a difficult puzzle. It's supposed to look like an ice cream topping sitting on top, not markings.

Fleece sprinkles sewn into the backing would get hidden under fur, would have to be strangely long to be visible. Fleece on long thread dangling from the backing may still get hidden in fur and/or tugged out during washing.

Airbrushing would look more like muddy spots rather than crisp sprinkles.

My favorite option would be some sort of puff paint on the surface of the fur would give the correct effect but she is super concerned about them getting brushed out. But wouldn't fleece be just as easily removed if left dangling on strings?

Apoxie sculpt formed into sprinkles and embedded into the fur fibers like dread beads.

Fur spots would look short and strange on top of a long fox fur.

DTD's and body suits

So I've been having trouble lately with body suit fitting my commissioners when they get them brand new. I've been giving each one an extra inch all the way around but they're still tight. How much more room do you add to your suits so they fit comfortably and give the wearer plenty of room to move around? I don't want to send out another suit until I get this figured out because I feel so bad that I keep having to have them send them back for re-fitting.

Also do you do anything special in the shoulder/arm region to give optimal movement there? I know some people make their DTD's with their arms a bit lower then they should be. How do you correct this?

Thank you so much in advance!

(Additional info: I use the trashbag method to make our patterns for body suits that way we don't have to cut up the original DTD)

Antlers?

I was at Hobby Lobby today and I saw this display and they have all this antler stuff that's just begging to be incorporated into  a fursuit head.
There are even antler 'letters' so if you ever thought you could need a antler that's shaped like a S they got that.

DF sent me dirty fur, will not honor exchange past 72 hours

SO I ordered this fur back in February as part of a few hundred dollar order from Distinctive Fabrics. http://www.distinctivefabric.com/
I have purchased thousands of dollars worth of fur from them over the years and until now had not had any problems. I had full trust in DF products.
The fur came nicely folded in a clear bag, it looked fine, and I did not need to use it for a while, I merely got it super early because it was on sale and so as not to miss the customer's deadline, so I popped it into storage.

It is now time to start the customer's suit. I unbag the fur to find the only part that is clean is the part folded onto the outside >:C

I contacted them and they merely directed me to their return policy stating that "Damaged, flawed and incorrect pattern/color/yardage must be reported within 72 hours."

I have been a loyal constant customer for years now, and have purchased thousands of dollars worth of fur from them, and it really upsets me that they gave me the cold shoulder (and trust me, I let them know this. This was the last straw on an already foul day aka "Hulk mode achieved, Beastcub MAD")

I feel that this is a case they should make an exception for, this fur is obviously dirty and should not have been sent to me, the filth is not something as easy to overlook during order processing as a dyelot change or even small holes or creased fibers. This is also not a production flaw like creasing, holes or a dyelot change, this is a case of product mishandling... I also cannot help but feel that the way it was bagged may have been intentionally misleading and I was sent the fur in hopes I would not notice it was dirty.

I know they claim I should have checked for "damage" right away, and maybe I should have checked it right away, and had it been "damaged" I might have just sat on my hands and shut up... but this is not "damaged" it is "dirty" I SHOULD NOT have to check to make sure my newly purchased product is not DIRTY. When you order a new shirt online you may expect a problem like it being the wrong size or even to find some loose stitching or an off-center print, but you would not expect it to be dirty.

I know some folks reading this will directly side with DF's terms of sale, and I realize this is an "on the fence" issue when it comes to just how much at fault DF is in not offering an exchange, and I respect your opinion if you side with DF... but I personally have a major issue with the fact I am sitting here feeling punished and out $80 for merely not checking to be sure my fresh new product was not filthy :[
Imagine if a fursuit maker did this, if they knowingly sent a suit with a big ol stain on it and said they were gonna do nothing about it when approached on the matter because the customer did not unbox it within their 3 month warranty... that would not fly in this fandom.

Despite years of trouble free patronage this whole thing has made me seriously reconsider working with Distinctive Fabrics in the future, especially since there is very little they exclusively carry.
They have proven a great source of fur in the past due to honoring CA business licenses by waiving state taxes, being one of the cheaper sources, and being in the same state as me thus expediting shipping times... but the lack of customer loyalty they just showed me is very disheartening...

I now have to try and clean this fur, and if that fails (which I suspect it will, you cannot use hot water on fake fur and this kind of grime tends to not come clean) I will have to spend another $80 plus shipping at someplace else (alas, they had this fur cheap in LA, had I known then what I know now I would have bought it there) and all the while my customer project has been officially delayed :(

So, yeah... if you choose work with DF, check your fabric upon arrival, it is clear to me now that they will send fabric with obvious issues and if you fail to report the issue within 72 hours you are stuck with it even if you have been a loyal customer for years.

I wanted to create a more consistent base for me to build off of and keep the ability to customize it at the same time so I sculpted and cast a really basic canine shape in expanding foam canine

DVC Blank and DVC Jawset: Fit Issues

$

I just received a Fox blank and a Fox jawset in the mail from DreamVision Creations, and I can't get the upper jawset to fit straight in the blank.

It slides in easily to a certain point, but it's completely crooked. If I try to push one side lower, it won't go; it feels like the entire blank is going to snap (or the jawset will) if I try to force it.

One side sticks out from the edge of the blank as well, but the "front" part of the jawset is touching just below the nosehole, so I can't really push it forward any further either.

Is there anything I can try to get the jawset to fit properly?

I don't have access to a heat gun, so I can't really warp the blank in order to force the jawset to fit.

Digi padding

So I'm doing a full suit with digi padding and had an idea. I've got a form fitting pair of workout pants and I was wondering if I could glue the foam directly to them to wear underneath the suit? My big concern is washing them -- is be afraid of the foam getting messed up. Thoughts?

Materials for a Raven

So I was going to make a fursuit for a friend, it's a fat-padded raven suit. They thought it'd would be good idea to use a form fitting material that wicks away sweat but I'm questioning that for two reasons.
1. If I'm padding the suit won't that show where any even slight imperfections are in the padding?
2. There is foam padding. Putting the breathable material on top of the padding will change nothing right? It's still like their in an oven of foam just with breathable material wrapped around it.

So basically what are some good materials to use for a raven, I saw DF blue feathers and I think that's probably my best bet. Anyone got any suggestions on what materials would make it more ravenesq? Also what would be a good way to keep them cool under the fat padding?

Plasti-Dip

This is the dumbest journal on this forum, I swear.

What exactly is Plasti-Dip, and do any of you use it on your fursuits/for what? I'm curious about using it, but have little-to-no knowledge.

Problem with resin eye

So I got some resin eye blanks made and I'm using them in a mask ( it's an animal but not really a fursuit).

I used acrylic paint for them and they both looked great. However, the paint on the back of only one of the eyes has started to crack.

So I went in, tried to paint into the little cracks but it didn't work. So I designed to scrub the paint back. I got to the layer that needed the most work - the pupil - and tried to paint into the minute cracks that had appeared - but the paint isn't showing up on the other side. I'm still seeing the cracks with light shining through.

As I said, the other eye is completely fine it's just one that went crazed.

Any idea what's going on and why paint isn't covering the cracks?

Trying to match a fur

I'm making some spare parts for a bodysuit and I need to match the fur. I'm pretty sure the light grey fur here used to be available on Fabric Empire as their silver delux fur. I was wondering if anyone had about 2-3 yards of it or something similar in color. Why light grey... it's like the hardest thing to find!

Hello! I was wondering if anyone could give me advice on attaching dreamvision's skinny raptor claws to handpaws? The base is to thick (1 inch across) to put though the inside of the glove the way I normally would attach claws. I considered hot glueing it to the outside but I'm worried about it getting knocked off. I don't really have the money for at stronger glue either. Also, if it helps figure it out I'm using seal fur as well. Thank you for any help!

feet paw bottoms

I'm sure this has been answered before but can't seem to find it -- (plus everyone has their preferences) BUT what do you guys use for outdoor feet bottoms? I'm looking preferably for a thinner, most importantly non-slip material. If said material comes in different colors other than black, that would also be a plus -- although I intend to put my pads behind a layer or two to keep them from getting AS scuffed up. :)

Any suggestions would be appreciated! I have a few friends who has recommended materials to me, but they still seem to find their bottoms a bit slippery and I'd prefer to avoid that.

Redlines please!

Long time no posting, last time I posted here was when I was making my knight Fluttershy fursuit last year. I've completed and also retired that suit now, but ANYWAY.

I'm going to be making a new fursuit of my fursona, an arctic fox called Hollie. Here's a ref: http://37.media.tumblr.com/bf3c2bad5830039ee5241ea204715c86/tumblr_nb17nhj1qI1qc172xo1_1280.jpg

Now I've already started making it, but I'm getting discouraged by how 'off' it's currently looking, and I'm wondering if it is okay getting some redlines to help guide me?

Photos under the break:

For the moment the muzzle is pinned on so it's a little droopy.
I think the problem is that it's too long ? If so where should I trim it down to make it look okay?
Is the shape okay?

I can provide more photos if needed, or links to these photos for bigger versions.
Thanks in advance and I hope this is okay to post!

(I hope the break works I apologise if it doesn't)

fluffy cheeks?

well, here is my fursuit design- its going to be a parital suit though, just head and tail and handpaws, maybe feet paws.... I haven't decided on pattern yet, but I need some help-
those cheeks. how do I make them nice and triangular? I'm making it foam on a balaclava, but unsure of how to make those cheeks.... and how to make the movable jaw? I have had a look around but haven't been able to find any simple tutorials.
And tips on making a cat muzzle- but I'm going to make it slightly longer than a cats muzzle.

Problems hiding seams in antipill fleece

$

Hello lovelies!

It's taking forever, but I'm finally getting close to finishing my Typhlosion mask! I'm currently "skinning" him in anti-pill fleece, but I've come across an unexpected problem. (Please bear in mind that nothing is glued down, so there is a little extra bagginess.)

I figured out that you can drastically reduce the appearance of seams by picking the fibers out of them, similar to what you'd do with fake fur. In the bottom photo, the center seam has this done to it while the left-most one has not. Unfortunately, I cannot hide the bulk. I've trimmed the seam allowance as much as I dare (about 1/8 of an inch in some places x.x) but there are still lumps. I was hoping the foam would get squished down under these, but it doesn't seem to be working. Any ideas? I don't want Typhlosion to have a lumpy head D:

(sorry about the crappy photos, btw >.>)
