Random fur question

Showing some of my fav fursuit pics to my fellow grad students today (ah, Fridays... good for goofing off on the internet and this LJ in particular), and one person asked a question I had no clue how to answer because I didn't know the answer.

So, the fur I've worked with so far has had a stiff-ish backing to it. Some of it has been soft enough to put against my skin and feel fine, some has been a bit scratchy, and all of it has had very little stretch to it.

How is a fursuit like these achieved with that fur?

These just seem very close-fitting and stretchy, and I'm not sure how that is done without the seams ruining the effect (by showing thick upraised parts at the seams) or the suit being too uncomfortable to wear.

Is it just a specific type of fur that has a really nice, strecthy flexible backing?

I, and my colleague (who may now be a converted furry! ^^) thank you for any guidance you can give. :)
