Sealant for skull mask?

Hey guys, for those of you that have skull-faced characters (or that have similar parts in design), what kind of sealant did you use after painting the face? I might want to shade mine with chalk pastels/acrylic paint, so brush-on might not work - are aerosol sealants (like Krylon Acrylic Matte for example), once dry, safe to have near your face, worn as a mask? I'm also worried about overspray on the inside being an issue. What do you guys recommend?
