Making Sock Paws Comfy?

Hey guys, I'm looking for some advice/opinions on sock paws.

I'm making my first ever fursuit and would love to have the realistic look of sock paws, plus walking "barefoot" is much less strenuous on my feet (I have weird feet that start to hurt easily if I'm in shoes for too long). I attempted making one pair using some crap fur I had laying around, and they turned out...bad. It was mostly an issue with me having no clue what I was doing, and being really bad at making/using duct tape dummies (they didn't fit my feet at all when I put them on, despite using a DTD of my feet).

I can improve that through practice. But what I'm really worried about is the comfort. When I put them on, I was instantly uncomfortable. I could feel every little line of hot glue I had used on the bottom of the sock. I didn't sew anything together, just kind of slapped it on with glue. In hindsight this was probably a bad idea.

So my questions are: is there any way to avoid stepping on lines of hot glue? Should I sew the fur directly to the sock? If so, how do I make sure it doesn't come apart when I'm wearing them? Are there other options? Should I just forget the sock paws and use an old pair of shoes? Are sock paws really worth the hassle? I'm only using a single color for the paws and I planned on using DVC's silicone feetpads for the pads. I might use the thick ones if I can afford it, I dunno.

And I'm not willing to buy a pair of sock paws, since the lowest price I've been able to find was about $200, when I can make them myself for maybe $30, or less. (If you know of anyone who sells them for less than $100, let me know please!)
