This is the character I'm about to start on:

It's a bit hard to tell on the reference, but the stripes on the arms, lower legs, and tail are just one spiraling stripe that wraps around the arm like the stripes on a candy cane of barbershop pole. I can see how I'd do them on the arms and legs with a DTD, but what would I do when making the tail pattern? Would I make a foam version of the tail's shape and pattern off that, or is there an easier way of doing that?

Now I have the idea to make a pattern for the tail, make a mock tail using an old sheet or something using it, and then draw the stripe in place on the mock tail and cut it out to use as a pattern. This seems like the best solution, but if anyone has a better idea, it would be nice to hear it.
