Elastic bands inside fursuit paws

Hey all I'm making some hand paws and I wanted to try out something new.
I have heard of makers sewing in elastic bands to the insides of fursuit paws so they stay on better/fit better but I wasn't entirely sure how to do it.
I have a pretty good idea, but I would like to know what the best size is. I was thinking half inch but I was worried it might be too thin and defeat the purpose of having elastic in there.
Anyone with experience have any tips for me?
