Alright, I'm in need of some help with this mask. The larp community isn't really able to offer me much help since they stick more to historical costumes and not so much fantasy or creature based... Unless you are an orc or a goblin oddly enough. Khajiit will change this.
So I've been trying to make a very minimal Larp safe mask, one I can wear on the field and handle accidental head shots when they happen on occassion and something that can stand up to rain and heat exposure from being outdoors for long periods.
So here is what I have so far.
Here is my Khajiit in game for color refs and such, I'm sculpting her face with the cheek structure of a caracal.
I'm aware the nose is wonky, I stopped to let the clay firm up and to just take a break from it in general. I'm using plasteline clay so it softens up when you work it for too long, let it sit for a while and it firms up nice and hard. Plus when I did the lifecast the right nostril came out weird so I have to build it up more than the left side.
I feel like the eye sockets look a bit odd too, is there a different look they should have? I need to still have my peripheral vision when I wear this and I'm trying or hoping that the fur sits a little flush to my face and not super raised looking around the eyes. They do look uneven, I'll fix that too.
Any opinions on the nose would be helpful, do I have to build it with a bit of an edge or a ditch to glue the fur into so when I fur it the fur meets up to it correctly?
I also have no idea how to add straps to it, I have very short hair on the back of my head, nothing long enough to hide a strap, should I add a strap and hide it with fur that's a similar color to my hair?
If anyone has any tutorials on building ears that would be amazing too, I'm not sure if I want to build the ear on separately or sculpt it into the mask. The issue with sculpting it on is I didn't include my ears in the life cast to know where they sit.
I like the look and placement of these ears.
My issue is I don't know what to make them out of if I don't sculpt them onto the mask. Maybe I could sculpt them as separate pieces and cast them in the resin I'm using so they don't have potential to tear or rip? I'd like to be able to add piercings to them and maybe some ear tufts but how in the world do you fur an ear?
On the topic of furring.... Wow how would you do that for a very low profile mask? Should I use the original methods I've seen using long fur and shaving it down and hope you can't see the backing of the fur? Or is there a short pile fur out there that may work? Granted I do want some tufts of fur on her cheeks and at the top of the mask so it blends into my hair a little bit. I've tossed around the idea of maybe using rabbit or an actual lynx or bobcat hide, or even using some alpaca wool fur used to make teddy bears like this stuff. The fabric is on top and the bears on the bottom are made using different colors of the ALP4/S fur fabric from IntercalMohair on Etsy.
Since its an organic fur would it hold paint better than sympathetic stuff? Has anyone ever used Alpaca or Mohair fur fabric?
Here are some samples of faux fur I picked up and cut down as short as I could with scissors. The top one feels just a little more course than the bottom one, the bottom is a lot more dense. Top is Hazelnut from EverAfter Fabrics on Etsy. Bottom is light tan from FurAccents on Etsy.
Last Question in this pile up of questions, Haha!
Painting. What should I use to paint on her spots and add some caracal red colored accents? Is there a nice paint out there that works really well on synthetic fur? Something weather proof, water proof and something that wont make the fur too stiff? If I went the organic route would color hold better on it? I don't own an airbrush either, are there other options to airbrushing without dropping $300+ on an airbrush kit?
Thanks for any help you guys can offer. First time mask maker here!
