So I picked up a fursuit head today from a local friend. I'm refurbishing it for them in time for a con in mid September. All I knew about it was that it was from a new maker when she first bought it so it was cheap, and the moving jaw has broken. Here's a picture of the head. It's cute, if looking more like a wolf than a jackal.
But then I skinned it to take a look at it's bones. And now I need your help because this is somewhat nightmarish for something I'm supposed to have done for a con in a few weeks.
I don't even know where to start. I'll just show pictures and explain what I see.
The jaw on the right is completely broken. The only reason it hadn't fallen completely off is because it was sandwiched between the lining and the faux fur. There's also cardboard!
You might have noticed wire in the previous picture. The hinges were attached with bent paperclips!
For whatever reason, the hinges were glued inside the head, and had foam in between the hinge and the jaw, with bent paperclips holding it all together. The resin was also insanely thin all the way around the blank and the jaw, with no reinforcing at all, which is probably why the jaw snapped like it did.
For whatever reason, the hinges were snapped in half and glued/wired in like they were. There's also a giant rectangular chunk cut out of both sides of the blank.
There's a large crack running along the cheekbone on the left side, it turns 90 degrees over the piece of elastic on there and hits the edge of the blank.
Is this mess even worth salvaging? Can it even be salvaged? Is there anything I can do to reinforce it at all and get a new set of hinges reattached to get the moving jaw working?
Should I just throw it all away and get a new blank and start over?
