How expensive is too expensive? (Faux fur)

I found this really nice faux fur called Tibet Faux fur that I seem to only find on Ebay from a seller in Israel. The pieces are just under a yard and I bought from her before and they are softer and more thick and lush than other faux furs. The only thing is that the normal price is $35 for under a yard.

I asked for 17 for 450 and she upped it to 500 total including shipping. This is the link to it:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/FAUX-FUR-FAKE-FABRIC-TIBET-LONG-HAIR-WHITE-COLOR-4-INCH-PILE-/250947187561?pt=US_Fabric&hash=item3a6d9e3369

Is it worth the extra 50 or should I tell her I can't go past 450? Or should I look for something better and cheaper. And if so, what have you had luck with? I would like to know what you guys think.

Seeking bear fur.

Hi all,

I've been watching this comm for a few years, ever since on of my LARP friends asked me for help with a partial suit. I'm a costumer and a very quiet furry.

I'm looking forward to Covenant LARP which starts in April. it's got a very tribal theme and a friend asked if I could make a headdress like the one in 13th Warrior:

I'm looking for recommendations of places to buy brown bear fur and possibly an actual bear skull to cast. Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated!

I need help making my first quad suit. Its a Kirin and i have never made a horse head

About a year ago I bought a lot yardage from what I thought was fabric empire; their winter fox. It was thick and lush. I buy it again and it's more like a whispy longer teddy. I mean it's nice fur, usable, but not what I wanted. Either they changed the fur or I bought the wrong fur. Either way I'm trying to find what I had before. This is probably the best picture I have of it  http://www.furaffinity.net/full/8357483/ What I do know is that it's not MM fur, I didn't buy it from Mendel's or I'm stuffed and it's definitely not whatever fabric empire is calling winter fox. I really don't have the time to wait for swatches in the mail.

At this point I think it's either one of these two furs.

Anyone used these furs from these companies or can recommend a similar fur that isn't crazy expensive? Thanks!

*EDIT*

I forgot to mention that it's pretty similar, almost the same to the fox furs that fabric.com was selling during christmas but doesn't carry anymore

For my lemur fursuit partial I want my tail to stand up and curl at the end. I like the way this fursuiter made their tails but they're fullsuits. Does anyone know how to make an upright tail for a partial?

Garter snake foamwork

Here's the completed foamwork for my garter snake partial.  The eyes are resin blanks purchased from Dreamvision Creations and painted myself.

After having a look at the photos, I'm going to remove some of the tape from the left side of the face (the right side, in the picture) and round out the cheek a bit, and snip a little off her brow.  After that it should be pretty symmetrical.

I realize it probably looks nothing like a snake, but she is intended to be VERY stylized.  :P

Rib padding and Fur Question

I'm going to be starting on a new suit pretty soon and I was wondering if you guys could help me with something.I'm making an extra toony stray cat. She's gonna be really thin and scraggly looking, with a balding and bandaged tail. She's also gonna have torn ears and bent whiskers, you know really mangy and scruffy looking lol I'm putting pics of her below the cut

Well I want to give her rib padding to make her look thinner but I can't seem to find any examples of rib padding on suits. Does anyone have any? if there even are any lol, I know scrawny and boney isn't really a popular choice for characters xD

Also, I'm thinking of using Mendels gray mountain goat fur for her main color, does anyone know of any suits where this fur's been used? I ordered a swatch but its tiny and I wanted to get a better idea for how it looks on a larger scale before I order it.

Here's some pics of the character so you get a better idea of what I'm going for(mix the colored reference with the sketch to get a better idea)

Toony fox /resin based dragon. Crits, please?

Two recently finished suits, one partial, the second a resin based head.  (The second is a material cost/experimental commission, I don't normally take resin based head commissions, but it was a good opportunity to practice more, as well as be challenged with things like horns/detachable horns, sculpting, etc etc.

Critique on either of these suits are accepted. Just keep it to this thread, please!

Paw pad help?

$

Okay so I am planning on making my own paw pads because all the ones I am finding on the internet are too expensive. First time fursuiter/fursuit maker btw. Anyways, I make a lot of sculpey sculptures and I came across this tutorial for making squishy buns. The girl in the tutorial used sculpey mold maker and some acrylic paint to color it. After it was baked it was squishy. It's almost like a stress ball. So my question is does anyone have any experience with sculpey mold maker? would it be possible to make paw pads with this?

"Better" anthro paws

Since I won't be finishing a fursuit by FC, I made me some paws to go along with a tail I already have.

The design is based off a leather glove pattern to get a better fit and control of the fur pile direction than the trace-your-hand method. The paw pads are stretch vinyl stuffed with polyfil, and the claws are resin cast from a clay sculpt.

I'd post a pattern, but honestly the easiest way to get it right is to grab some cheap leather gardening gloves that fit you and take a seam-ripper to them. You should have four to five separate pieces. After a little trimming, lay out the pieces and trace onto cardstock for a pattern. Easy!

Casting Resin in a room with a space heater?

hey all!

So today I tried to cast resin in a room that was about 50 degrees fahrenheit. It came out a bit brittle and I think it's only useful as a master copy at this point :( I have cast solid doll parts in such a cold room but I guess slush casting requires more care. I do have a space heater for the room. Would it be safe to use the space heater to heat the room while casting? Would it create too much of an unstable temperature with an open window? I have to keep the window open for ventilation.

This is something that has been on my mind for awhile now: I notice quite a few of the more popular fursuit makers have short hair.

How many of you enjoy having short hair for the purpose of it being easier to wear fursuit heads, or work on them? Long hair?

In my personal experience, I cut my hair extremely short to make it easier for me the wear fursuit heads. My hair is thick when long, and I always had to use 15+ bobby pins to keep the hair out of my eyes. Now with it all gone, I haven't had any problem for the past two years. No snagging, no foam in it, no hot glue webs, etc. It's quite nice, and fursuit heads slip on easy.

What are your thoughts, fursuit community?

Just a fun little question open to anyone!

Lifecasting and dragonskin silicone

$

Perhaps this is a question more so for the FX forum, but I recently have been experimenting with lifecasting with alginate and ultra-cal (so far a face cast,  and my forearm/hand.)

A few weeks back I purchased a trial kit of "Dragon skin FX pro" which is apparently more so for silicone applications and prosthetics for skin. I meant to buy regular Dragon skin, shore hardness 20.  Unless they are the same thing?

My goal is to build a silicone shell over a resin base for "skin" and hair punch the hair line to blend it into the hood of the mask, and the silicone to be stretchy and flesh like with the moving jaw and so forth. AND, potentially a set of form fitting silicone gloves.  I'm still doing research and waying my options, and I don't plan to attempt this project until late spring, but I'm taking baby steps, as far as lifecasting small areas and going to run some tests for little tongues or noses or miniature mock ups and the like with dragonskin and resin. I'm not making the mistake of jumping into this tricky field full force like I did when I first started resin. Dx Horrible idea!

Anyways, What I basically want to know is:

1: Are Dragonskin 20 and Dragon skin fx pro the same things? Or different?
2: Would Dragonskin be a viable option for stretchy gloves or a resin skin?
3:What ultra-cal 30, assuming I use a release agent, be a good mold material for dragonskin 20?

These are all things I'll be testing in small doses, but might as weel save time if the answer's already there. :>

Thanks!

Mesh for eyes

I'm going to be starting work on my first head in a week's time and need to get some mesh for the eyes. I'm planning on making 3D (follow-me) eyes in a toony style. All the guides i've read/watched say to use vinyl-weave or plastic crochet mesh, but I can't for the life of me find anything online here in the UK.

I guess it must be called something else here, but could someone point me in the right direction of an ebay listing or something for what i need? Thanks!

hood/neck/(and maybe ears) question

so i was browsing the fursuit tag on tumblr for some inspiration when i came across this post

http://dapperwolfe.tumblr.com/post/40646490300/final-foaming-process-for-my-partial-person-in (this isn't my blog nor my photos.)

i want to try foaming a mask like this however i'm not sure how to make a hood/neck for the mask? i'm guessing i would need to make some sort of pattern but i'm not really good at visualizing these things.
(i'm also not sure how one would add ears to it. i can only think of extending the foam more over the head. unless i'm thinking of an incorrect ear positioning.)

Antlers and a few things

Looking for simple lightweight deer antlers. Not real ones. I can't do any casting or molding of any kind. If anyone does some sort of mounting bracket or screws for them as well, that'd be cool. Cause I have no idea how to get them on a resin based head.

Also looking for a dark green fur. Any greens from CRS crafts, DF or fabric.com don't look dark enough.

Fur questions for a possible Bunnymund fursuit

$

Ever since I saw Rise of the Guardians, the idea to make a Bunnymund fursuit has been growing on me. I know how I plan to make the majority of it, but I need some advice when it comes to the fur for the project.

My biggest problem is deciding whether I should buy two colors of fur or airbrush the whole thing. Bunnymund is white with a lot of gray-blue and some darker tones, and I'm not sure if it'd be easier/better to sew gray on and airbrush it with a light blue-gray, or if I should just buy white and airbrush all the markings on.

This is what I've figured so far:

Using gray and white fur would take out a lot of the airbrushing needed, though it would still need a light coat to get the blue hues in. Problem is, Bunnymund has some funky markings on his back that would make sewing a nightmare.

Airbrushing the whole thing would allow me to get those complex markings done without the sewing hassle, and it'd be easier to incorporate the little transitions in color that he has. However, I'm not sure how much airbrushing white fur can take, and if it'd be too much work to do the whole thing.

What I'm going for:

And the back markings that are throwing me off (you can't see them all in this, but just for an idea on their complexity):
Bunnymund Back ref

Another thing I'm wondering concerns the fur itself. Would I be better off using DF or fox fur? I love the softness of DF, but I'm leaning more towards fox for the white (assuming I'm not using gray fur and am airbrushing everything) for the realistic appearance. Where can I find some quality white fox fur for a decent price? Also, is there a pile you guys would recommend for the suit? I can shave down anything that's too long, but I'd like some length for his fluffier patches.

Thank so much!
