Another way to help :)

(If this is off-topic, please feel free to delete it)

Hello all, I've recently made a blog designed to help people make fursuits. It's more so just general things, where as here is more specific and much better for individual research. Seeing how much know-how you all have, I'd be honored if you could share your experience with the newbies every now and then. :)

I have linked this fursuit.livejournal.com on the front page description of the blog. Here it is:

Mostly just to post WIPs asking for suggestions, telling past mistakes, showing off proud works, and whatnot.

I'm sorry in advance if this bothers anyone. ;^;

Second Fullsuit, Critique?

So, I finally got around to finding the picture of the fullsuit I made for MFF, and decided to post it here for any critique or such.

The bandersnatch is my second bodysuit/fullsuit, and was a first for many things, including a resin mask, realistic jaw, LED in the eyes, and hooves.

What do you all think?

Nose Problems

I purchased a silicone nose from a crafter, and it's of depressingly low quality. Worse still, even though the crafter states that their noses come with a felt backing (which seems to be a common thing included from most crafters) - my nose has no backing at all. The nose is just basically a chunk of silicone.

Since it doesn't have a backing, I have no idea how to install it into my project (which is essentially a plushie head, not a foam/resin/etc head/base). I don't know how to work with silicone @_@;

Does anyone have any advice on how I should install it? Just slather the back with glue and stick it on? What kind of glue would be best?

Thank you for any advice :}

Fursuit Help - Nose ,eyes,ears

I ment to upload this  a while ago but was hoping to have more parts to it ,sadly i have yet to have the patience and time to sit and take more photos of my dogs <: but i will be sure to update this once i do but here is some reference photos to help with whatever you need it for

it helped me create my silicone nose and get a good foam ear shape.

also if there is anything specific on what you need photo references of ,just say ,i plan on doing Paw,claw ,muzzle shape and head rotation ,if i can i might do teeth but they tend only do the "teeth" command for a few seconds lol .I also have a Boxer but i i just put my staffy and utonagan on here as my Boxer has an under-bite and epulis (lumps in her mouth) as well as being really old xD;

I was going to do an "emotion" one but i think people might take it the wrong way and correct me :'D as dogs don't do human expressions for the same emotions as us .

3D Printed blanks

I've been wanting to try my hand at creating resin blanks, except that I'm not a huge fan of mixing chemicals and I don't really have a well-ventilated area to work in (plus I live in PA, so it's too cold to work outside this time of year)

Using a to-scale model of a human head as my guide, I'm going to model the head, jaw, and hinges in 3D Studio Max, and then have them printed using Polyamide, which is light, durable, slightly flexible, and inexpensive (compared to other printable materials).

Even though my background is in 3D modeling, I realize that this could be a complete flop. I don't know of any other fursuit artists who have attempted something like this, and I know of only one or two artists in the fandom who have created 3D printed figurines.  This technology is so new that it's mostly used on an industrial level, but I still think it's worth looking into.  Once it becomes more commonplace and printers come down in price a bit, I could see this becoming a faster, cheaper, and cleaner way of creating blanks.

Some general questions I have about blanks:

I've read that springs can be used in place of elastic to give the jaw a good "snap".  What sorts of springs, and how / where are they installed?

What sort of screws are used for the hinge?  If I know what type of screw I need, I can measure the diameter of it and model the holes into the blank and the hinges before they are printed, so I won't even have to worry about drilling.

Corgi suit

I honestly have no idea how to do this, since I made a LJ just for this!!
But me and my friend really want to make matching corgi suits, and they'd likely be partials (and then probably upgraded to fullsuits later on)
But I'm wondering... would it be a good idea to make a corgi suit without the dropped crotch? Would it still be recognisable by just the face? They just seem so uncomfortable, and kinda hard to make, since this would be my first fullsuit....
The character in question- http://www.furaffinity.net/view/9604736/
It would still probably be digitigrade.
Also- what furs would be closest to these colours? I know it's pretty hard to find dark grey and light grey separate furs, but it's a big part of the design.... DF furs are preferred since they're relatively cheap and decent quality from what I know.
And one last thing (sorry for so many questions D: ) but how well does DF shave?
EDIT: would it be okay to airbrush DF fur for some speckles??

Examples of ivory fox fur or another cream fur?

I haven't posted here in ages! Does anyone have an example of a suit using I'm Stuffed Fur's ivory fox? The length is perfect, but I'm not sure it's "ivory" enough for what I'm looking for.

I'm planning on making a persian suit, so if anyone has any other fur suggestions that's more of a cream color that would be fantastic. I know the DF ivory is an option, but I'm looking for something less shiny and a bit more realistic if possible.

Thanks! <3

Wireing LEDS

$

I need help with some LEDs both I have on hand and plan to order.
Both mostly involving resisters. The first problem is I found some already done LED kits with 10 LEDs each, but for ease since I plan to use them in one tail I want to rewire the pair together. I'm not sure what resister I would need to get. I was able to find that the current are 25ohms with 10% tolerance both powered by 2 AA. Could I get a resister to have all 10 LEDS running on the same AA or would I have to also get a new case so they run on 4 since it's double the lights? Or just connect the resisters in series? Sadly the pack says nothing about the LED voltage(the are cylindrical red rather than round topped if that matters) and I'm assuming the current is 20. :/ Because of that I'm asking here. I checked the instructable but without that I'm at a loss being so new to this.
The second I have ordered but don't have yet but it is a blue 12v LED strip the power being 0.05w x 60. Originally meant for a car. Using a 12v battery would I need a resister for the strip? If so what ohm? Thanks a bunch!

A Wild Aardvark Appears!

My Rattata partial is currently on hold while I work on a fullsuit for FWA. :3 I wanted  something simple but that would stand out and give me a unique animal to play around with.

Enter Melanie the Aardvark.

This girl is the result of a lot of planning, numerous sketches during work, and a night of furious, non-stop crafting. I really wanted to push her expression and do a bit of stylistic 'tooning' while still making her read 'aardvark'. I ended up deciding on a shy look complete with slightly lowered eyebrows, flat back ears, and a big nervous smile.

This is the reference I was mostly working off of: http://www.furaffinity.net/full/9491786/

I did decide to make her features a bit more exaggerated since doing that ref, though.

I would love to hear any critique you might have for her. I'm very excited about this project and I want her to come out as lovely as I possibly can manage.

Finished fursuit: Cosmo Husky

It's been a little while since I shared finished work, so here's a recently finished project, Cosmo Husky! I really enjoyed working on this guy. Not only was the customer amazing, but he wanted a different expression than happy-toony, which was a nice challenge. I tried many iterations and we settled on this. I'm quite pleased with how this costume turned out!

Crit always welcome by PM only, as this is a commission. Thanks guys!

stompy styled feet

Hey all, working on a commission with stompy legs, and I want to avoid using slippers (as a test build) - the only thing is, I'm not sure how to attach the sole to the foam - would I use shoe goo, hot glue or spray glue?

Basically I'm going to carve the feet out of a solid block of foam and hollow them out so they're comfortable for the wearer :3

Many thanks in advance for tips / answers!

yarn tail upkeep question

So. I friggen love yarn tails. They're so beautiful and fun to make, but my biggest beef is their tendency to get messy. I straighten and brush my yarn (almost obsessively) but just wondering if there are any helpful tips out there in keeping them nice as possible when you can't sit there and brush them every five minutes. I was thinking hairspray perhaps? Maybe lightly mist and brush the tail out? Thoughts? Like, if I were to go to a con or a meet, would it be good to do something like that before going out?

Any help in this area would be great!

Callix the Akita Complete (Soon up for Bidding)

Here he is! After much labor and showing him off, Callix is ready for a new home! My only problem is, what do I want for him?

FYI: DAH TAIL! MMM My favorite part of him, besides the head. It's so fat....like his fat head, which is why I made it that fat. He needed balance, lol.

Originally I was like, "At least 170." Specifically because I need over 200 dollars to finish a personal suit in time for a con. I know I'm going to have trouble with making my first fullsuit so I want plenty of time to vent, take breaks, waste fur, and that kind of thing, yet still get it done in time.

He's not actually worth that much and it's a novice build.  The fur I used is from the store and I cut up teddy bears to make his white accents because I'm too poor to buy white fur. GOOD white fur. Does $115 sound reasonable for a starting bid? He's sentimental to me,  I mean, naturally, so he has more of a worth than some people might pay, but I am not vain. I'll eventually figure out how to think reasonable and not with my emotions.

Looking for Help with Eye Placement and Vision Questions.

I've been trying to avoid asking for help on my first head and such, but there comes a point when one can only speculate just so much.

Right now my largest issue is placement of eyes, and tear ducts for vision. I am finding that when i made the head i misplaced where my eyes were by a slight bit so the "tearduct" is lined up with one eye, but then my other eye falls sorta behind the mask's eye on the other side.

It seems like I can maybe get the placement of the heads eyes to look right, but my actual vision out of the suit is going to suffer. I guess what I am wondering is:

How much field of vision is to be expected when using tear duct vision on a general basis?

I was also wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to fix this problem without having to start over.

I was going to just try "shift" the central part of the nose bridge over by adding more foam and adjusting the sculpted areas.

The eyes and lids were just temporarily placed in, so that I could get an idea of how it would go together. The last picture hopefully shows what I mean about my eyes not really lining up correctly. (also i do know that the bottom jaw is crooked when I am wearing it if you also happen to notice that)

Below are a bunch of pictures.

Updates and issues

Got some updates with my suit, but also have a major issue.

His jaw just baaaaarely moves with my mouth, and his mouth will not close. So I was thinking I'd try out some elastic to pull it shut. Anyone ever try this on a plastic canvas based head? I'll also be padding the inside when I'm finished for extra snug fit.

A few fursuit questions!

$

I'm going to be doing a fursuit rather soon, and I'd like to ask some questions! I'm going to be doing two, hopefully not too far apart from each other because I need one to go with my older sister's cosplay and the other is my fursona. ^//^;

First, I was wondering where a good place to buy some rust colored fur, and hopefully some ivory colored fur as well. I've heard of WW's amazing rust, but it's 3" pile, which is longer than other types.. This is going to be for the first suit I make, which will be a sort of cosplay of my WoW character... And how do you sew somewhat along curves? I'm going to be padding the chest and stomach a bit.

For the other one, I'm going to need a bright orange, green, and also ivory. For this suit, I was wondering how to better hide my curves! The fursona I'd like to make is a male, and I'm not. I do have a chest binder for my other cosplays, but I don't think that'd be very much fun under a fursuit, because the binder is a bit itchy as it is.

Another question for both suits is how to add hair to both? The first suit is going to need a long wig, which will be in pigtails. I'm thinking I'm going to make this wig myself, using a tutorial I saw on Youtube and fibers from ArdaWigs. The second would have a shorter wig with bangs, and kind of floofy in the back? I'm thinking I really like RadyWolf's suits and how he does his wigs. ^^

Thank you!

Dragon mask Wip.....Fresh eyes/opinions wanted!

So, before I go to bed;

Dragon head, minus hood/mane, nostrils, and finishing details.  Has very long, rabbit like ears.  Tomorrow I cast the remaining pieces, detail and finish/assemble the mask. But figured I'd ask for opinions, etc?  I should note, although the ref has a certain shape to it, But I was given reference for a different face/snout shape for the dragon. (Mainly, the way Shinerai draws dragons,) I don't think the client will mind me posting here, but I'd figured I'd get fresh eyes on this resin mask. Everything is hand sculpt, cast by me, very tedious, but worth it.  Also, looking for crit on the eyes/eyelids. Dx having trouble positioning them, etc.

Thanks!
