Looking for mentors to help with first suit! Please?

Hi! My friend and I are making Pokemon fursuits for the first time! I'm looking for a couple people that I can message regularly and even perhaps Skype with to help us make them. I've watched tons of videos online but I'm still kinda very confused about some things, and I would love it if experienced fursuiters could give me helpful information so I don't screw up my first time.

I'm really inspired by CanineHybrid's Pokemon costumes, and I watched her panel on basic suit making. She says to go here for any help, so here I am! (:

The Pokemon I want to make is Dragonite, and my friend is going to be Mewtwo. I've drawn the basic designs for my Dragonite, http://i.imgur.com/qSJbP.jpg (too lazy to color the rest XD). I really need help and criticism to know if this is actually going to work and how. We're going to make my duct tape dummy this weekend (I did my friend's last week).

Haha, sorry if this is a jumbled mess. Please email me if you want to help!! (:

Large Molds for Resin Eyes?

$

I've checked everywhere on google and on the community tags.

Where would you get large molds for creating resin eyes? Not the standard paint pallet ones. But for making big resin eyes? Or do they have really large versions too?

I feel if I use the Michael's ornament domes filled part-way (not fully, they are too large) they may tilt and create a little un-even effect or that they wont have the right type of curve to appear rounded, like the edges being curved outwards like Reese's pieces candies XD ... -- And also, they would be hard to use compared to pouring resin into many eyes to create all at once since they'd roll around and be large and annoying.

I would LOVE many different sizes! And yes, I would buy some if someone points them out to me :D

Reindeer Hooves, Antlers, head and general crit + help ? :)

I will just combine as much as I can into one post.
Plastic dip not sticking well, size of hooves, and head info. in the cut ^^
How do I make the antlers stay more upwards?

IMG_3125
*Are these too large? Are they the right shape if I do foam around them entirely with hot glue, and the pacman mouth too?

*Legs:  I was planning on doing round foam around the hooves near the top, but if they are completely round it may look unrealistic. I'm not sure on how to do more deer-like padding, tutorials and info will help! I don't want this costume to look bad at all, I paid $300+ in materials so far and own other expensive things  want to use on this ^_^

*Plasti-dip: I sprayed a piece of foam with this, and it didn't stick at all. It looked bad. I want to try another piece to test it again, but is it because it is COLD outside? Does it need to set at room temperature instead?

*Antlers: How do I get these to stay more upright? I glued them from the top in hopes they'd stand upwards more, but they are quite heavy. They hurt my head when I put it on, so foaming them from the inside or having some kind of protection around them inside to hold them up will help, but not too sure on exactly... How to do that to keep them upright the way i want them to be ^^;

one size fits all handpaws?

Im doing a booth in a few months and id like to have a bunch of handpaws to offer because the ones i was wearing were insanely popular last year. I was wondering how I should go about making them fit a wide variety of people.

Ive seen some toony looking paws that seem to be one size fits all so i was thinking of doing a matrices style pattern for them.
Any tips on the matter?

Due to the sale, I'm curious as to what fur is best to buy from fabric.com. I'm looking for both short and long pile and was eyeing the baby blue/reds and black. Anyone have advice on the type to get from them? Something good quality and fairly soft... I'm fairly clueless when it comes to buying fur, sorry.
Thanks in advance!

Matting silicone?

$

Ive just started using silicone to cast my own pawpads, noses etc and they're very shiny and "wet look". I want to achieve a matt effect on these but so far every website Ive been to only talks about matting PAINTED silicone not cast silicone. Im using DragonSkin 20. Also the fur fibres cling to the silicone, anything I can do to stop this or is it a case of just manning up and dealing with it?

Any advice you guys can give?

EDIT:
Meant to say my molds are ABS plastic, not sure if that matters at all

sewing machine problems...

okay so i just changed the needle on my brand new machine for the first time after the previous needled broke.
everything was working fine before i changed it and now its bunching up under the fabrics and for some reason the top thread is just flying all over the place.

everything is threaded right. i tried fiddling with the stitch and tension. i dont know whats wrong with it.. this is so frustrating. Im new to machine trouble shooting. Right now im at the point where i consult the manual every time i have to change a setting or rethread it.

machines are way too much trouble

well that problems fixed now my thread keeps breaking  gahhh i just wanted to sew some paws on my day off!!! :(

How to machine sew a zipper!

Hi folks!
I'd love to share my method of installing a zipper with you today! I use a sewing machine to do this! I try to work smarter, not harder, by planning my zipper placement, and if at all possible I sew it in before the entire body is assembled! With a small amount of pattern planning (I sew up a test pattern from sheets/muslin before I make the final from fur) I know where the zipper will go! This photo-series shows what will become a back zipper on a future costume of mine!

I like to use the big plastic parka zippers, because they are nice and sturdy, and they are more resilient if fur happens to catch in it.

Big photos below the cut! (13 pictures)

Pin 1 side
Unzip your zipper and pin one side down to your uncut fabric.

Zipper
Here this shows my chalk mark where I plan to continue the zipper's path on the uncut fabric.

Sew
Sew the first side that you pinned, make sure your needle is as close to the zippers teeth as possible. Many sewing machines have a "needle position" setting.

First side sewn
The first side is now sewn down!

Pin other side
Zip up your zipper all the way and pin the other side so it doesn't shift or get uneven.

Top of the zipper
At the top of the zipper you can fold the tails of the zipper fabric over the edges and pin them down. You can unzip the zipper slider a little ways if you find it is challenging to sew the very top of the zipper, the slider can be bulky. Pause and zip it back up when you continue sewing the rest of the zipper.

Sew other side
Sew the other side, be sure the needle is as close to the zipper teeth as possible.

Cutting the end.
If you are like me, the zipper's always too long, has some frustrating separating thingy, or they only had the double-slider zippers in the store. So use hot glue to adhere your teeth together. Optionally place a small piece of fabric over the teeth for a neat appearance.

Cutting the end.
Also place a dab of glue on the other side too, and wrap your fabric around. Don't glue your zipper to your bodysuit!! You may want to repair it someday, this end /does not/ need or get to be glued down. You can sew it down with a few hand-stitches if you choose.

Brush out the seams
Fur will be trapped in the seams where you sewed the two sides of the zipper down. Gently lift the fibers out of the sewn stitching. This is an important step to hiding your zipper!

Unzip your zipper
This can be tricky, but use your fingertip to slide the zipper slider down and open it up.

Cut your zipper open
Use a blade to cut the backing and cleanly make a zipper opening! Faux fur does not tend to unravel, the zipper will be hidden since the fabric butts up against itself exactly!

Hidden zipper!
Admire your beautiful handiwork, that's one hidden zipper! :D

If you cut your fabric open already, or if where you want to place your zipper can't avoid a seam, sew the first side of your zipper down, then use a temporary ladder stitch to butt the two pieces together flat (try to keep it flat, and no seam allowance to make it become bulky) you will have to be very careful to line your zipper up with the opening, that's all! Just cut your threads for the ladder stitch to open your zipper up after you sew down the other side.

I do hope this helps! :D

First Fursuit Head!

Tell me whatcha think! shes just a basic ol white wolf. she was originally going to be amaterasu but i decided not to go through the trouble. this was basically a test to make sure the resin bases worked, and also my first time working with fur or fursuits or whatever. i didnt like the way the foam was working for me, so i took a risk and started my fursuiting with resin bases. i studied quite hard. ive been into fursuiting since i was ten, so definatey a long time of research before i started resin. and any new suiters looking at this, do NOT do what i did. use foam first because if you mess up with resin or any part of that process, you'll regret it.

as you probably can tell, her eyes pop out like a pug... no offense to pugs... but i went a little intense on the eyelids because i used the "drape" method of furring so i had to kind of guess where the eyes where and cut a hole for them. i went  abit high, but oh well. duct tape pattern next time. and this picture is very flattering to the fur, because this fur is GRIZZLY fur. fromJOANNS. i wanted to get this done by halloween, so i had no choice but to get the fur at the store. it looks ok when its brushed out but shaves down horribly. i used scissors for the entire trimming. im using some fancy good quality fur on my next mask. and the other reson the eyes pop out is the pupils. i thought it would look funny with small normal size pupils so i used bigger pupils but it didnt work XD

heres just a lil funny pic i took. i all it NOM for obvious reasons.

the neck is not sewn together yet and probably never will be because i cant fit my head in it otherwise. and i dont want to waste a zipper on my first mask. ill save for the next mask im making which will be part of a fullsuit. so feel free to leave constructive criticism. ive recieved comments prevously on other sites where people say "that is so scary" only worse with curses etc. and i find it offensive. so please try to keep comments nice, and dont just blurt out something without thinking it over. XD i really am tempted to do commissions early next year, but ill check my work status.
PS she will gum youto death

More resin questions

I have some pretty general questions about resin. Specifically how large / how many containers i need of silicone, resin and approx amount of sulfur-free clay.

I really want to purchase from smooth-on, though I am not sure what resins and silicone I should even buy. The masks I plan on making are Fox and Falco from SSBB and also a large variety of birds. Is there a specific resin or silicone some of you favor over others? I'd really love to make some purchases now, but I'm still unsure about what to buy. I'd love some advice, reviews or whatever you have to offer.

Also: I have some clay that is literally from somebody's back yard. Is sulfur a problem in 100% au naturale clays?
Thanks for your time.

Can MM Fox Fur be shaved down for a face?

I heard MM fox fur shaves down really well, but would I be able to shave it down enough for face fur? Probably to a height of less than an inch in places... If not, would it be better to use cubby bear fur from CR's Crafts?

Silly Question: Attaching hats/props to fursuits?

Hey guys! Thanks for the help in my last post, it helped a tonne! =D

But now another stupid question... I have this hat that I would like sitting directly on-top of my fursuit head, not just hanging off an ear like last con. I am happy to cut/reshape/sew parts of the hat to make it work C: So... How do? Would it work for a beanie or any other style hat, etc?

Hat: (Front half is fabric, back half is all mesh!)

Fursuit taxes?

If this doesnt belong here please lemme know and ill take it down asap ^^ I have some tax questions related to fursuits!

First off, do other makers charge sales tax? Because I did not and am a bit concerned, I wasn't even sure if I should or not.

Now, I know you print off the paypal report thing in January and take it to the tax guy, but how much can I expect to pay or whatnot? What happens if you dont have enough to pay?

I just do not understand taxes, and am hoping some of the bigger makers can advise here ^^ thank you!

also, i do not have a buisness license, i just kinda do it on the side, i understand you can just file it under personal? i live in idaho if that helps ^^;;

My newest canine!

It has been a very long time since I made a realistic canine head (more than 2 years I believe) and my canine mask mold was severely in need of updating.
