A Pony Tail - Help!

$

Making a pegacorn fursuit and I am having trouble with the tail. I bought delrin rod and on my first attempt the belt loop and the foam rested well against my back, (delrin rod at 90 degrees) but then I decided to increase the degrees a bit from a 90 degree angle to a bit wider (goal was to get tail bottom further away from body). In doing so the belt/harness delrin square no longer rests nicely on my back but the weight of it pulls down on the tail and tweaks the position of the rod so that the belt is resting awkwardly, the bottom of the rectangle is against my back. I used Matrices's tail tutorial but I reversed it. Instead of making the supporting rods that come out from the tail the bottom of the structure I put them at the top. Could this have something to do with it? Then again, I know I am making a very large tail so perhaps that is the challenge itself. So I have bought another 5ft of delrin rod and I am going to try using the original version by making the supporting rods that go into the foam on the bottom instead of on the top. But any suggestions to help me get really good support on this tail would be much appreciated.

Edit: Here is an example of how it rests against my back. This is how it reacts regardless of the belt I use.

Sandpaper?

Hey everyone!

I've got a question about what type of sandpaper to buy for simply sanding down the plastic of my fursuit eyes so the buckram adheres to it better when gluing. I'm not sure what grit to go with!

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Making of Sodium

I kind of want to keep all my stuff together here while I try to make this fursuit. I have made some terrible fursuit heads and parts in the past, most recently in 2012, but I'm a somewhat competent sewer (I can do the thing, but have little knowledge of anything, even basic things like the names of stitches and what to use them for, but I've worked a machine and even sewed simple garments before so I'm not starting from ground zero) That being said I'm a giant perfectionist with little patience and experience. The combination is bad, and so I'm hoping to try this with actual guidance this time. Start to finish I'll be posting my Sodium work here. I just got this character and am /ready/ to try to bring him to life, but first I have to make a game plan and get materials, and go from there. I know I should work on the base first(for the head, which I figure I should make first) but I'm not sure where to get some things I'll probably need

I know I can get foam from Joanne's, what's the verdict on foam btw? is that a good foam to get? I'm not used to working with foam I've only done it once. What thicknesses should I get? I'm not afraid to go big, though I'm not the best at eyeballing measurements. How much foam should I get and how do I start with the head?

A Wig head thing. Where do I get that? How do I make sure that it will fit my head and not just the wig head? Are there sizes? Is there anything I should know about buying them/where to buy them specifically?

And lastly, fur. Any suggestions? I use Fabric.com but sometimes it's hard for me to find decent fur still. I'm worried about the fur looking completely different than the art for the character, I want to sell this grey/brown tabby look, it's a pretty common cat colouration.

The suit is supposed to look kind of tired/sad I think, is that a bad idea? will it not be cute if it's tired looking?

If you run into a tag that you think doesn't make sense I want to add it to the suit and am just not at that point yet, feel free to comment on it regardless.

beady eyes

My friend really wants to do a head in his style! However, it seems to have obstacles since the eyes are much like "teddy bear" eyes.

as you can see, the eyes are very shiny and beady! How would he go about doing this? Thanks!

Just sharing.

Since this was a 5 month long project for me (150-200+ hours of work) i'm anxious about any criticism to improvement. I'm open towards it though because I want to improve, but just know i'm anxious! Lol! I wish I could have shown some WIP but this was one of those 'keep it hidden until finalized' customer commissions.

Fleece handpaws

Hey all,

I'm trying to create some fleece handpaws for my suit. They're those cheap winter gloves with foam built on top. I want to make them out of fleece. Would you create a duct tape pattern for handpaws if you're using fleece since it's a stretchy material? Is there maybe a better method that is eluding me?

Thanks bunches

Seam endings?

When sewing, either by machine or hand, how to you tie off the end? I've been using hot glue to end it since it stays pretty well, but it seems unprofessional.
Trying to tie it into a knot just gets tedious and seems to not work half the time. Is there a better method or is this normal?

Shortpile furs?

I need a navy blue and a grey shortpile for an upcoming project, but it seems the only place I can find both is CR crafts. I'll only be using it on the fingers and toes of the suit. I'm not too worried about the feetpaws, but I've heard of cr's shortpile shedding like crazy, and I don't want my handpaws to have bald patches. x-x

So, is cr crafts shortpile quality as bad as I'm assuming? If so, do you know anywhere else with grey and navy shortpile?

Feel free to critique, although I will be posting some up-close pics of the head, handpaws, and feetpaws in a few weeks.

This is Ace, the red panda. All that's left is the body (and furring and some other things, of course)... unless the head is too small for a full bodysuit. (Which I think it is)

Note: The fursuit head DOESN'T point downward, I was just angling my own head downwards. Oops.
Also, in the front view, my head is facing the camera, but the fursuit head is sliightly angled to the right. (This makes it look a bit asymmetrical)

How does it look for a first fursuit? If the head is too small, I'll make the suit a 3/4ths instead of a full.

Thank you for your time!

Machine Washable Fursuit Heads

So, the popularity of fursuit heads that can be chucked in the washing machine is rising. How do these heads differ in construction to other fursuit heads? Do the eyes get taken out? Is hot glue used, and if so, doesn't the washing dislodge parts of the head like teeth/eyes?
Also, doesn't the foam take so long to dry out that it'd pose a mould risk?

Polystyrene Sheet thickness?

I purchased some Evergreen polystyrene sheets for white toony eyes and I'm just wondering, is it too thick? too thin? Going back and getting a different thickness isn't an issue, I just don't want it to be too thin or too thick.

Hiding seams in fleece

I swear I saw someone reveal the secret to this, but I just can't find it now!

I'm refleecing my Khaazbaar head, it looks nice but the seams are very obvious and 'puffed' up, which is hard to hide. Is there a trick to getting the seams to stay flatter so they aren't as pronounced?

Static-y faux fur

I couldn't find anything on this and I'm surprised nobody has asked in the past. Does anyone else have an issue with faux fur getting static-like? Is it a seasonal thing or does it have something to do with the air moisture levels? Is there a scientific reason behind all of this?

Alternative to resin eyes?

Hey there guys! I'm planning a suit for my fursona, but her eyes are wide-set so I will not be looking through them. I plan to make use of the tear ducts similar to how a resin head is assembled. Though, seeing as my fursona also has large, bulbous eyes, I don't want to opt for resin. I'd like to use some kind of material (preferably shiny, but not super important) that I could paint or that is pure, fully-red. I plan to put a plastic "bubble" over the eyes for that extra effect. I've seen a couple suits with reflective eyes also, and I have no idea how they do that, but that would be awesome. :o
Speaking of which, any good sources for clear plastic half-spheres? I have a couple, but one set is hazy and the other is very thin plastic, and I'm afraid of scratches or warping. :c

Distinctive Fabrics Substitute?

It seems that DF's customer service has gone downhill in the past few years, and people have been receiving wrong or damaged fabric. Is this still the case? If so, is there another supplier of the DF 2" pile fur? I'm looking specifically for white, baby blue, and royal blue furs. I also can't for the life of me remember what the width of these furs are. Anyone know off hand? Thanks in advance!

How to attach body padding?

$

So, I've begun construction on my next project Guilmon! Anyway, I want to add some padding to the thighs and calves to beef up the legs to look more accurate. He's plantigrade, so what I've done before won't work the same way. SO, I was wondering HOW people fasten the foam to the inner "body" suit? Do you just use hot glue? I'd assume that'd be really uncomfortable as I can't even handle glue residue on a pair of sock paws I attempted, let along rubbing on my legs. x.x I figure I'll probably have to get a diveskin for this suit which brings me to another issue. I was hoping to go for a back zipper, since Guilmon has a padded tum. But the diveskins I've seen all have a zipper on the front, so I'm not really sure how to handle that. I've considered making the belly separate and using the black stripes that go from his neck and back to attach the belly, but I don't really want to go that route in fear of how it would look. T.T

Making plush padding was another thought, but not sure how to go about that either. x.x

Suggestions? Here is the concept art I've made for it.

Keeping Cool

As I almost finish making the body for my fursuit, I've taken into consideration how hot it ends up being. My question is, how to you keep cool in your fursuit? I was planning to buy a shirt from Under Armour's Heat Gear, but I feel like it won't be enough.
With the design, I don't think I can put a fan in the muzzle. I know hydration and taking breaks are important, but is there another way that you can keep yourself cool while in suit?

More adivce please!

Thank you very much to the people who have helped me so far! I think I addressed the issues that were suggested (and actually put the foamwork on my headblank this time). Would it be possible to get some feedback on my updated head? I'm still not sure how I feel about it. I still feel like something is off... maybe the beak is too long?

Please be aware that my head blank is not perfectly round and the base of it isn't flat, so the head is leaning a bit. Also, the balaclava is a bit baggy on top

Now for actually on my head!
I see that the lower left side of my jaw hangs open a little more, I THINK that's because it's not glued as far down as the other side is.

Here is a reference that is very similar to the look I'm going for, though it is not my reference personally.

The only thing I don't like abut the reference piece is the lower jaw, so I was going for a lower jaw structure more like this:

I really want this head to come out good, so feel free to critique hard! I'm hoping for the quality to be as good or almost as good) as the suit posted above.

Thank you!

I have some white fur that I would like to "enhance" with white glitter.
What's the best way to get the glitter to stick without messing up the fur or fall off later?
