Yet Another Fur Hunt!

Just bought this handsome dude with the intention of making him into a suit and auctioning him off. The colors are rather unusual, especially the main color, which is kind of a tanish-pink. I'm looking more for shorter pile to make the mane stand out more. I ordered some samples of I'm Stuffed's seals. They're the only ones I know of with a large selection of seal/beaver, so if there's another supplier I'd love to hear about them. I also might like Mohair Bear's lush beige and crimson mink, but I don't see a place to order swatches from them? So if anyone's used either of those and can show me pictures that'd be great. Though, I'd rather buy something from the States since it'll be for auction and I'm sure shipping costs from the UK are sky-high.

I know a ton of the online fur suppliers and have checked them.

Tl;dr I need:
a short tan preferrably with a hint of pink
a short dark red
a long mahogany/medium brown

Fursuit Washable/Safe Paint Suitable For Non-Porous Surfaces?

Trying to solve a puzzle and it's bugging the heck out of me.

I recently bought some really nice supplies for fursuit making, but the surface of my eye-mesh is non-porous and the paint isn't sticking to it. I've painted Chromacryl-Brand Acrylic and Createx Opaque onto the surface and it just scratches off.

Am experimenting with coating the eye mesh in black it before I use it on a fursuit head. Am I doing something wrong?
What does it take to make Createx paint bind to non-porous surfaces? Does it need a base primer or to be cured after application?

Thanks!

Tips for pointy digitigrade padding?

I know most people want a smoother, more natural look, but I typically draw my character with pointed knees and it looks odd with rounded ones. I'd greatly prefer to use polyfil instead of foam for the padding, anyone have any tips for doing this?

Some help on a few topics!

Been a while for eljay and Fursuit, but could use some assistance! I'm finally about to build my lion, and its a whole new level for me, having only built toony.

This will be a semi-realistic suit, featuring muscle padding, glass eyes and taxidermy eyes. Never used any of this before other than the jaws, and I want to be better-prepped this time.

For the muscle padding, I peeked through the memories but didn't get much info. It seems some will make a separate muscle suit to wear underneath the fur, while others sew the fur onto this under suit. What are pros/cons of either option?

As far as the eyes, Without having a head in front of me, I'm not sure what size (in MM) of half spheres I should get. What are average sizes folks use, especially in big cats? Also, how are you guys making the irises with these? I've seen some instances where people printed directly onto thin buckram. Is this a trick that any inkjet printer can do, and how susceptible to smearing/running is the final product? As for the tear-duct vision, are people painting their buckram black, or is it available someplace already black?

For those using taxidermy jaws, where are you getting them, and what size is good on a lion? I've used Van Dyke's, but their selection of sizes isn't impressive.

Thanks!

a workable sewing machine for fur?

I want a sewing machine that can work decently with most materials including fur, fleece, and felt. Vinyl for things such as pawpads and noses would be helpful but not completely necessary.

There's one that seems nice for sale at Joanns but I have no idea what specs to even look for in a sewing machine so I can work with fur. Here it is, Singer 4452: http://www.joann.com/singer-4452-heavy-duty-sewing-machine/13454442.html#start=1

I read here on livejournal that the 4411 Singer didn't work well with fur (http://fursuit.livejournal.com/5234541.html) But what about the 4452?

Just looking for something that will get the job done.

Ventilation

How would you recommend putting the best ventilation in a suit? I wear glasses and I don't want them to fog up... I was thinking of ear vents, poking holes in the foam before putting fur on it, having a removable tongue so I could breathe better and making a plush nose with holes in it and maybe making some sort of vent on the top of the head under the hair poof of my character? Would these idea's work?

Warning for those buying from ImStuffedFur

Just a heads up, the Ivory Fox fur on imstuffedfur is no longer the nice "luxury fox" style it used to be. I received my order yesterday and they have switched to MM Fox. I compared it to my old scraps and it's the identical fur.

I've contacted Beverly about the problem and she says I should have asked about the change in supplier (which it mentions on the site), and, well, maybe I should have. But the description of Ivory Fox still states:
"This is a beautiful, ivory fox fur that is absolutely gorgeous!!
The pile length is approx. two inches (perhaps a little longer) and the fur is soft, dense, and luscious!
This is NOT a thin, dry craft fur, it is a high fashion fur that no picture can do justice."
and I am concerned that someone else could easily see that description and make the same mistake I did. In my opinion, MM fox is definitely on the thin-and-dry side as furs go these days. I have asked her to change that description, but I'm also letting you know here, in case anyone was about to buy that hoping for something nicer.

In related news, I have a yard of MM Fox I don't need, haha. I'm re-selling it here:

Finnished suit + some questions

Hey guys! I finnished my wolf suit today. I'd love some ideas on how to improve him. I know I need to chqnge the eyes, and line the mouth. ( need more leather) I hand dyed all the fur and hand sculpted the nose, teeth, and claws. And yes, that is fun fur. I'm a very young suiter and my parents just let me buy some fur from fursuit supplies to build a suit for Anthrocon.

A little while ago I posted a photo sharing my first digi padding suit. If your wondering that was for my best friend as a b-day present.

In a couple days, I'm going to a craft fair and I'm going to sell some tails, heads, and ear sets. Me and the friend I made the white wolf suit will be going to be full suit models.

Question. My new character has a large mane around her neck that goes from the top of the neck down to the chest. How would I make the neck of this suit? I'm thinking to attach half the mane to the head to make the neck and then sew the rest where it's is going to be. Or making the whole mane attached to the head? Maybe makeing it out of foam? Am I over thinking it? Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

    Patterning padding for digitigrade legs

So I made a leg pattern using Matrices' tutorial, but now I need to make patterns for the pillows that will go inside. The leg shape I chose is somewhat different from the example she has in the tutorial, so I'm not sure if the technique she used to make the pillows will work for me. Has anyone on here used the same basic method of her tutorial with different leg shapes/proportions and can tell me how to go about doing this?

    couple of questions

So making a head in the future (hopefully haven't bought the character yet just excited) and would love to replicate the toothy grin he's got in his ref http://www.furaffinity.net/view/17345716/ (and if not this character it's still an expression that would be fun to do in the future) but not sure exactly how to go about it. Has anyone made/seen a head with a similar expression before? I'm thinking maybe doing a huge grining mouth and making fleece teeth? I want to give him a happy mischevious expression but don't want him to look scary. I'm also concerned about airflow.

Any foam examples of something close/similar would be hugely helpful!

Also -- I've found a few tutorials I'm probably going to play with BUT are there any patterns/videos out there for padded four finger paws. Mine look alright but they look awfully flat, and I'd love some insight on how to do some padded paws. Preferably without too much limitation as far as dexterity goes.

Any help is super appreciated! :)

Also I haven't bought from Imstuffedfur in FOREVER and it seems like a lot of fur suppliers seem to be changing in quality and not sure what to expect from these guys anymore. I remember they came highly recommended to me at one point years ago. I was considering purchasing some of their seal fur (they have seal colors that I really need) and so I pray it's decent quality. Anyone order seal from them recently?

Lastly looking for a seal/beaver fur that can match this

    http://fursuitsupplies.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=67&product_id=354

I don't need much a 1/4-1/2 if anyone can part with something that'd be awesome -- or direct me to somewhere that sells it. Thanks!

Does anyone know what these are? and where I can get them?

This is a ridiculous warning, but..

Polyfil is very slippery on smooth floors.

I was playing around with my digitigrade leg padding with some loosely stuffed in to fill it out, and started doing a little dance. Some of the stuffing came out and got scattered on the floor, but I ignored it since it's stuffing, it can't hurt you, right?

One moment I was dancing, the next moment I saw sparkles and faceplanted into the floor, right on my chin. I ended up needing four stitches because I slipped on polyfil. Don't leave loose stuffing lying around on the floor where you might slip on it and end up like me :/

    Question about mannequin head

    $

I recently ordered this mannequin head, problem is, the old fursuit head I was working on (which is the one that was built on a balaclava and has a moving jaw) can not be slipped over all the way and the jaw of the fursuit head rests differently on the mannequin as opposed to my head. The fursuit head fits my head fine, though. I was planning on scrapping it anyway but I was worried about if I tried to build a new head using the mannequin, it would be too big for me.

While the mannequin head may be fitted for adults, I'm not fully one yet, so I'm not sure if this would be a part of the problem.

    one more fur question

Lately I've been reading about how non shag fur (might) be better in some ways than shag fur. I've read people mention it is much less likely to get messy, and it even sounds easier to work with. My problem, I honestly have no idea how to tell the difference between shag and non shag furs...especially when it comes to buying.

How can you guys tell? Does it look a certain way? Are there key words? Am I being special? Or is it as simple as a description not using the word shag like ....blue luxury fur? Would that mean it's non shag?

    Help in this area is really needed! Working on expanding what types of fur I get, but I feel very uneducated in this regard. ;_;

foam base help, lining the head and removing hot glue from fleece

    $

oh hell i'm sorry for posting here that amount of times, y'all are just helping me so much i can't stop that easily...  okay, anyways, i just started on my own fursuit /made quite a few commissions past two years but couldn't manage to make anything for myself until now/ and need some general/moving jaw advice /the head is all foam/

it just gave me a lot of problems, as i wanted a not very big head with with a moving jaw, the only avaible material was foam and balaclava base wasn't quite working for me. here are some pics of the WIP head, the first one is with hair and white cheek fur slapped on just for a general idea of how's gonna look when done /really sorry for my pc screen showing there, haha/.

i dunno, i think the base is lacking sth... i thought about extending the cheeks down a bit but that would restrict the jaw movement/
the moving jaw is just an elastic strap going here and glued to the rest of the head on the inside /it really goes just a little bit up, not all over the head or so/, so it's the only thing connecting the lower jaw to it.

one problem - the jaw doesnt really close, it hangs a bit open and that's annoying... i tried tightening the elastic but the only thing it did was make the jaw lose its shape. other than that, it moves just okay, though i have absolutely no idea how i would fur that head so everything'd still work... any tips?
anddd the lining. taping the inside does not work as after i remove the tape it just keeps sticking to itself and the pattern is unusable. also i saw the way Matrices did show in a comment under an older post in there, which was basically sewing a balaclava-like shape, cut eye holes in it that match the suit's eye placement and glue that inside, but it also did not work in my case as it just NEVER fits... lining commission heads makes me so frustrated, like i have to glue fabric pieces on the inside and even though it's comfortable it looks HORRIBLE and i did get pretty badly burned a few times when doing this /you can even see one of these burns on photos there/...
here comes the last question, when gluing the fur to the head even though i'm trying to make everything look clean the fur ALWAYS slips down a bit and leaves stains of glue on fleece around the eyes, inside the muzzle or so... got this problem again while working on my newest commission and i just can't leave it like it is, but i have no idea how to get rid of that glue... are there any ways?
    thanks

    Short-medium pile rust fur?

Hello again guys, apologies for the multiple posts recently, but ya'll are just so knowledgeable here is my first port of call for anything fursuit related.

I have some mm rust fox fur that I'll be using for my red panda fursuit. But I'd like to experiment with varying fur lengths and use the mm fur for parts such as: shoulders, cheeks, "hair", haunches, tail, etc. And I was looking for a nice short-medium pile (like 1-2 inch) that matches it fairly closely that I could use for the other parts of him that are rust.

Ideally I'd like a fur that feels more realistic than luxury shag for example. The other furs (mm exempt) I am using are dense and realistic feeling.

Can anybody think of any furs that might fit this description? I am UK based but if there was no alternative would be willing to buy from US.

I have included a pic of MM Rust in case anyone needed a comparison :)

(Picture taken from google search, from qarrezel's da page)

EDIT: Does anyone know what this rust fur used is and if it matches mm at all?

I am very very excited to inform you all (if you haven't seen yet) that I posted 4 new tutorials plus some extra fursuit-making info on my Tumblr page! These were tutorials I formatted for handouts for teaching at conventions and I hadn't had a chance to update my website with the new content, since they were originally written in a "handout" format with simplified images and with content found on my website and some new added info, I put them on Tumblr for ease in formatting.

    http://matrices.tumblr.com/tagged/tutorial

You can find all of my tutorials that I have on tumblr under the #tutorial tag.

The tutorials include the following content:
    Making a Tail
    All About Fursuit Heads
    Making a Fursuit Body
and Body Padding for a Fursuit

In between that I also posted how to straighten crimped faux fur, and there's also quite a few other tutorials and Fursuit-making tips that can be found in that tag as well. Also included are a bunch of common Fursuit-Related questions answered, which I plan to update periodically. So let me know if you have any extra questions! :D
