how do I paint on this?

Hey Ive seen this material used on eyes a lot, and I like it more than buckram. unfortunately it's extremely hard to paint on without chipping off, although I've found if I color it with sharpie then paint it, it seems to stick a lot better. is there a better way? Ive tried sanding, priming first (that seems to clog up the little holes easier)
