Query about dyeing fur: getting a varigation of tints in the fur so it goes from dark to light

I have looked though the memories and didn't find an entry addressing my question specifically, so I figured I'd ask. Can't hurt, right? :)

I understand that dyeing fur isn't easy, and the best ways involve acrylic paints thinned with water, brushed/painted into the fur, and then dried while brushing so the pigment adheres to the fur but doesn't completely clump the fur. It looks great in all the examples I've seen, and does get the job done.

However, what about varying colors into the dyed fur? For example, if I wanted the base of a tail to have a deep tint of a color and the tip of the tail to have a light tint of a color, with the fur getting progressingly lighter as it goes down? The best I can think of is to dye the fur in tiny stripes as it goes from the dark to the light color, but I was wondering if there was a different/better way that someone else has discovered.

Because the area is so large, I didn't think spray paint or airbrushing would work (all the tutorials for both say to use these for small, detailed work, not coloring a giant part of the fursuit), although since this wouldn't be for highly defined work (having the colors run a bit as the fur is brushed would probably help the effect), it might do fine.

I'm just not sure what others have tried and found to be successful or unsuccessful. If anybody has some advice, I would greatly appreciated it. I'd rather not try a technique that someone else has done and can verify does not work, but I'm definitely open to experimention.

(And if anyone needs a visual to get what the heck I'm saying, the white/red dress in the bottom panel here is a good example of the type of color change I'm trying to achieve: http://beyondtheveilcomic.com/?p=410)

Thanks in advance for any advice.
