Can you airbrush acrylic yarn?

I found a few skeins of white yarn in my closet, and was thinking of making a yarn tail. However if it is all pure white I think it would look awfully boring and flat. I have an airbrush I can borrow from my mom, and a huge kit of airbrush acrylic paint.

So here's my question: Can I airbrush this tail when it is done and actually have it work out?
(i.e. No large clumps of fur and paint, paint not flaking off, paint not coming of when hand washing, etc.)

I figured it *should* work, since most faux fur on fursuits is acrylic, and airbrushing is done on them all the time, but I have heard both ways on coloring acrylic yarn tails. I don't want to go through all the trouble and materials if it doesn't work. Has anyone had success with airbrushing brushed out acrylic yarn?
