Furring the ears

For my heads of my 'sona I use crushed red velvet for the red markings on the nose, around the eyes, and the ears. It's the best color for my character and I like the sheen. Anywhodles, I can't seem to get a seamless appearance for the ears. Always on the top is an obvious series of folds where I glued and re-glued to get it to stick down.

What are your tips for getting rid of those folds? They always make the suit look a lot less impressive (and I need all the help I can get...)
