Seeking advice on glowing eyes for Gargoyle

I'm in the process of crafting my first ever fursuit, and while I have a clear idea of what I want to do (or at least attempt) on almost every aspect, the eyes pose a problem.
The creature I'm making is a Gargoyle OC, which means glowing eyes.

Gargoyles have glowing eyes, like so: http://openvaultdisney.files.wordpress.com/2011/12/gargoyles-001.jpg

The design of my character:

I want to keep the shape of the eyesockets like the cartoon. Not sure if the shape has a name, but it's somewhere between a rectange and an oval. I also want to get a glow effect over the entire shape of the eye (not just the pupils). And I want it to look good both in daylight and at night. (Not that the glow needs to be visible in full sunlight, but I don't want light to shine back into the head when using colored lenses, for example.)
I haven't started sculpting the head yet, so all options are still open.

The LED-resin eyes are nice, but don't fill the entire socket.
El wires wouldn't illuminate the centre enough.

Perhaps a combination of LED + el wire would work, but I have no idea.

I've been thinking about leds behind a blue lens or flash gel:

2 possible problems I can foresee:
* No vision because of the led light on the inside of the head
* looking horrible during daylight
Adding cartoony eyes (painted mesh) between the lens and leds might make it look better, but I worry that that will reduce visibility to 0.

If anyone has experience, or just general advice, I would love to hear from you!
