So for my mum's birthday, I bought one of these for her cake:
The one I bought didn't spin like that one ( maybe it was broke, who knows) but the mechanism for the flower opening is so simple but very effective:

Such a thrilling diagram. Basically, the purple parts are the " flower" Petal and Head/bud. The grey is the base ( the Green "leaf" bowl and tub) and the black is a spring.
The neutral position ( with the spring outstretched) is flower open. Pushing on the bud makes the petals come up ( this scared mum the first time, the movement is not dissimilar to a mouth closing).
Now that the candles have gone, the device it fun to play with and the movement is very fluid and slow. You can make it almost pulse.
I'm looking at it for help in my proposed Skag costume and I thought I'd post it here as it may be useful in moving fursuit parts, such as mutant mouths, ears, thrilled necks etc.
