Greyscale Hyena

I cannot say that I post my work here often as most of it is just the common fluff you see around, but I am just too proud of the turout of this one NOT to share! :D

I started off using my newest large wolf/canine base

After molding and casting, I removed the nose and a section of the eye areas to make room for the larger eyes and silicone nose

The base looked really silly with the nose cobbed onto it as it was larger than it needed to be for the canine base but just right for the hyena it was to become. Sadly I forgot to get snapshots of it foamed as I foamed and furred the face that same day. Some heat shaping with a heat gun was required to widen the muzzle and lower jaw to fit the broad taxidermy jawset that was being installed as well as to get the brow in the proper bowled shape that hyena's have.

The next day I trimmed the face more, making the ears, and attached the hood, trimming it to length. Lip detail was then scupted and the mouth propped open to cure.

On then came the airbrushing and finishing details!!!

Meet Greyscale. A good while ago turbulentfizz did a reference upon hyenas, arpegius_wolf adding in below. Together they made a really wicked awesome reference on how hyenas are nothing like canines. I saved it and held onto it, pulling it out as well as a lot of pictures on Google for hyena ears and I must say, with those references I was able to make one of my coolest heads ever.

The link to their reference can be found here: http://fursuit.livejournal.com/5058381.html#t60876621

Grey features the following:

Silicone hyena nose
Resin following eyes
Hand trimmed MM fox fur
Extremely detailed flexi-ears
NFT mane
Moving jaw complete with a taxidermy hyena jawset
Airbrushed details
Horse hair whiskers
Hidden zipper

Working on her I discoverd just how unlike canines hyenas really are, referencing heavily upon skull and skinned shots as well to see those powerful muscles. All I can say from this is if you want to make a mask as close to the species you are making, use every reference available as they will al be valuable to you!
