A Pony Tail - Help!

Making a pegacorn fursuit and I am having trouble with the tail. I bought delrin rod and on my first attempt the belt loop and the foam rested well against my back, (delrin rod at 90 degrees) but then I decided to increase the degrees a bit from a 90 degree angle to a bit wider (goal was to get tail bottom further away from body). In doing so the belt/harness delrin square no longer rests nicely on my back but the weight of it pulls down on the tail and tweaks the position of the rod so that the belt is resting awkwardly, the bottom of the rectangle is against my back. I used Matrices's tail tutorial but I reversed it. Instead of making the supporting rods that come out from the tail the bottom of the structure I put them at the top. Could this have something to do with it? Then again, I know I am making a very large tail so perhaps that is the challenge itself. So I have bought another 5ft of delrin rod and I am going to try using the original version by making the supporting rods that go into the foam on the bottom instead of on the top. But any suggestions to help me get really good support on this tail would be much appreciated.

Edit: Here is an example of how it rests against my back. This is how it reacts regardless of the belt I use.
