I just moved out of an apartment that had an issue with mice. I tried to move my fursuit head out of reach, but no dice. My new apartment has no exposed holes from the outside and a maintenance crew, so I'm not worried about it happening again, but I need to know what to do with the damage done.
One of my heads got squished in the move, but I plan on refurbishing it. It was for sure not touched by mice, so I'm not worried about it so much.
My other head isn't compromised but I know mice were on it. There are a few spots where its noticable. I want to wash it and make sure that everything is clean, especially since its going near my face, and mice carry hantavirus and such (and I absolutely DO NOT want to expose myself or others to that). There is a head form in the mask so I know that they didn't get in it, just on it. The head is in excellent condition otherwise, no weird smells or chew holes. My current plan it so get some Urine Off and add it to some water along with some sort of detergent and try to spot clean, but I'd like to hit the whole head if possible, just to be sure. Is that a good idea?
I've washed fur by itself before, but where this is a completed head and there's more on it than just sweat, I don't know what to do. There is no airbrushing, but the fur is very uncommon and I don't have a lot left of it. I cried when I realized what happened and I want to save it. Can I? Should I? Also, how should I store heads for maximum protection? I don't allow animal contact with any of my crafts or supplies, but you can never be too careful, apparently :S I have all of my furs stored in totes and they are untouched, fortunately. But what do you use for just heads to keep them safe and unsquished?
