Tragedy with sewing machine! :( Advice needed.

Damg it :'( Preface: a little griping first before my questions cause I dont really have anyone to talk to about it.

---

Taking some advice I got here I recently scheduled a visit to a local sewing company so that I could take a few classes on the basic beginnings of using my machine.

Well on the way over there the carrying case failed and my new machine fell out into the concrete parking lot!

After that I noticed little pieces of black metal coming out of it while at the class. It seemed to work fine until I got home and tried it out again and some arm on the inside of the hardware gave way.
Next I took it back to the sewing company to have it looked and and fixed and after they reglued the part, they then repoted to me that as soon as they tested it out the arm broke again in a different area and came to pieces. They told me the machine's damage now is "a total loss" :'C

That machine I found for 30$ used at a resale store. I had been told at the sewing company it was a good older model that worked pretty well. But the misfortune of the parking lot drop pretty much spoiled my luck on finding a good working machine for so cheap.

So suffice to say I am back in the market looking for a new machine. I REALLY have to keep the price down under 80$. And they tell me that a used older model that is well made is infinitely better than a newer machine, that new ones are fvery poorly made these days. I jsut happened to luck out that the first machine I bought without any know-how turned out to be a nice working model.

But I dont count that luck happening again. So what I need to know is when I go out searching for a used machine, what are the very important things I need to look for as I inspect a machine?
