Eye spacing help; how do you guys get the eyes so far apart?

So I've been tossing around some ideas for another head, but I've been running into a problem; most animals have eyes that are spaced much farther apart than in humans. The solutions I've seen are 1) to make the eyes toonishly close to one another, b) to put vision ports in the tear duct instead of through the eye, or c) put vision ports somewhere else (I used the mouth on my last head, for example). I'm having trouble getting my heads to look proportional while acocunting for our close-set eyes and huge, flat foreheads. To illustrate, I have some examples of an Umbreon below:

I'm using digital 3D modeling for now to explore the shape I want before I waste real materials :P
I would like to go with toony (or at least flat) eyes for now, but I'm not sure how to do that without making them too close. Could someone help me (perhaps with some redlines) on getting proportions right? I'm especially interested in the look those Japanese fursuits somehow acheieve, but I have no clue how they do it. Halp!
