Thought I'd share this, since A: it's f'n hilarious, and B: it might help you guys who have a hard time finding the right fitting mannequin head/armature or are looking to save money. In total I think I spent about $18 in materials to make this.
I used this tutorial here: http://costumedork.wordpress.com/2011/01/30/do-it-yourself-packing-tape-body-molds-and-casts/
And this was my result: http://instagram.com/p/RYUOV7JYge/
Now, I did what he recommended NOT to do, and that was tape across the face. I wanted some of the anatomical landmarks visible on the cast to make it easier to start placing foam. Just be prepared to fight and struggle your way out of the thing, and make sure you have a friend and some sharp low-profile bandage scissors.
At this point I'm ready to start building the head once I get a balaclava and a decent reference drawing finished. Fun times!
