sewing complicated markings

I'm actually asking this question in relation to a kigu I'm making, but it -is- an African Wild Dog kigu....so I hope this is an okay place to ask this. I'm actually restarting this project for a few reasons, and since I'm restarting I figured I might as well ask about something I noticed when I started the first time.

Since this is an African wild dog type pattern I'm doing, there are lots of spots, patches, that sort of thing. I've simplified the markings down so they're not super crazy or intricate, but you guys get the idea. Oh, also I'm working with fleece by the way. My question is this, I noticed that around where I've sewn my spots and such, the fabric around the markings has like a creased/wavy look...and sometimes markings like spots look like they poof out. Basically, I want to know how to sew my markings to lay flat. Is there a certain way I need to do this? I'm hand sewing everything.

I think a friend of mine was watching me sew for a bit and she mentioned that I needed a serger. I looked them up, and I'm not sure if that will solve my problem or not. Is there something I can do to my pattern? I'm not sure if I should or shouldn't be adding seam allowance to my markings honestly, and I'm not sure if there is any way particular stitch or technique I need to be using to help with this problem. I suppose since it is a kigu, and they are baggy this isn't going to be something that's very noticeable in the end, but if there is something I can do to make everything look awesome, then...why not?

I appreciate all your sewing expertise! I try and enjoy it, but have many lessons to learn!
