Quick airbrush questions

Couldn't find these answered in any previous post on the subject, so I'll ask.

I understand fur can be painted from light to dark. For example, a black heart can be painted onto white fur. And I understand the reverse is not true. A white heart cannot be painted onto black fur without it ending up looking clumpy at best (and ruined at worst). When you need to add light marking to a fursuit that is dark fur, it is best to cut them out of the fur color of choice and sew them in.

Totally makes sense.

But what if you didn't want a really solid color change. Suppose you have a black fursuit and you want just little subtle hints of lighter color to emphasize muscle lines or help problem seams blend in to each other?

Can you use white/light paint to airbrush in subtle shading on dark fur?

And the second quick question: in many of the video tutorials I've seen, it seems best to airbrush the paint onto the fur and then use a pet brush on the airbrushed part to gently detangle the fur and make sure it looks nice, but it's hard to judge the time gap between airbrushing the paint and brushing the fur on a sped up video.

How long should you wait before brushing the fur? I know you want the paint to be mostly dry so you don't get it everywhere, but if it dries for too long before you brush it, will that ruin the final look?

Thanks muchly!
